Possessed, the most respected and first true American death metal band from the legendary Bay Area, San Francisco, gained a real huge cult status following in the short life time. They have influenced a number of other death/thrash and black bands around the globe during two decades, in the 80�s and 90�s. They basically set new standards and created the whole death metal concept with the brutal flesh ripping and tormenting grunt vocals by Jeff Becerra, insane thunderous drumming by Mike Sus and nasty vicious guitars by Mike Torrao and Larry Lalonde.

had to catch that bus at like 5:45 am cuz I lived up the backside of a mountain in Northern Pennsylvania, before moving to Philly to start my own music adventures lol... so i had plenty of time to bust out mix tapes, throw on my patched up jean jacket, find a back seat with the other hessiers, metalheads, and punks. Beat of pals.

no, it`s thrash metal, just very raw, the mixture its more like leprosy from death, death metal of course, but a lot of thrash metal influences there.
Everyone can have an opinion about what genre this is. But they are legit classified as death metal. There's a legit documentary about Possessed called the creation of death metal. It had to of started some where. That's like saying Black Sabbath is hard rock but they are classified as the pioneers of heavy metal. Genres evolve. This was the beginning of a new genre and Death took it and fine tuned it.

Yup been there done that twice almost like Deja Vu back to back shows of possessed ,same spot on the right, same smell ,Same drunx, set list, same ppl I went with, fuck same everthing , next day it was creepyer, same nightmares death metal came in the wind ,or was I just POSSESSED!! @@snakepitguy UA-cam erased my comment because I linked the info to the March 11, 1987 info. My buddy Pat Vergara filmed both of the shows on March 11 & April 11. He gave me a copy of the dvd at my house in Long Beach many years ago.
This show actually began with March To Die and Pentagram and then went into Beasts.

What the fuck were they thinking going in a more thrash than death direction or black direction. Its like they were unsure what to do with their talent. If you check out their interviews they admit they're not into pigeon holing or ascribing to any particular movement although they wouldn't mind being part of one. Chuck Schuldiner stayed at their club and hanged out with them. He knew all their riffs. Imagine if he'd recorded a couple of records with them. Imagine if Sepultura had stuck to dark black death metal like they did in Morbid Visions. Imagine if Slayer had gone full on death mode right after Reign in Blood. Goddamn it all to hell.

Primus is the current band where Larry LaLonde is playing. I'm saying that he cant compare primus with possessed because they are way different from each other
but not better and why is he so ashamed of playing in a band that was far more groundbreaking in music itself then primus. possessed created a style of music that bands are and are trying to play to this day.

Possessed is the combination of Sus' weird drumming, the wicked riffs and leads of Torrao and LaLonde and the vocals of Becerra and - the most important ingredient - the writing style of Mike Torrao which cannot be reproduced by any other. Possessed IS Becerra,Torrao,LaLonde and Sus ...

Never understood what the big deal was with these guys... The music was never anything special or ground breaking, true they were very young at the time of their first album and I owned it because back then that's how you heard music ( you had to buy it) Always thought the vocals were weak, they had some cool riffs but nothing to be considered influential, other bands at the time left a much bigger mark on the scene
it was very ground breaking, it was pretty much the first step towards death metal, Death was the band that took what possessed had put down and turned it into death metal.
