Stanton Lanier grew up playing the piano and writing songs, but he never seriously considered it as something he could make his living doing.
Instead, he went the more practical route, attending Georgia Tech and getting business degrees that led him to years of work in the financial industry.
But his desire to make music never left him, and he never left it behind. Even working a “normal” day job, he managed to compose around 30 songs and release CDs of his music.
These songs were all meant to glorify God and had their basis in Scripture - even the instrumentals - and the more Stanton created, the more he felt called to create.
So of course the time came for him to make a choice - stay with the safe and secure job and keep his music on the side, or dive into what he felt God was calling him to do with everything he had. And you can hear him tell how that choice worked out on this podcast episode.

I didn't even want to watch this video. It didn't speak to me. I'm not a musician. WOW was I wrong!!! It spoke volumes and not only that, I think I was directed to it by the Holy Spirit. I've been struggling to take that step of faith and just like you, Stanton, I have not believed that my Art could support me, financially. I had put it off to the side, like a hobby and got to it when I could. My heart is beating out of my chest right now, because I know that God is calling me to let go of the business I'm in in order to take hold of what He created me for. He told me that He didn't call me to give it up entirely right now, but it needed to be the hobby and my Art needed to be the main thing. I also have an analytic mind, although I'm not good in math. My artistic style is realism and I am analytic in creating it. I too deal with fear and indecision as to whether or not it's God's voice or my own. Anyway, so many things spoke to me and I felt at times that we were twins! haha. Thank you Matt for this interview and thank you Stanton for your encouragement. Most of all, thank you Holy Spirit for not giving up on me.
Stanton, I was just having a conversation with God today, about laying it out for me. Because he knows how I am, with needing to understand the steps. 😂I'm not trying to be disobedient, I just don't literally know how to take the steps. Like how my teachers struggled to teach me reading and writing, because of my dyslexia. There's a desire to want to understand, but no means of wrapping your head around the task at hand.
As I was watching this I knew it was meant for someone like me. God showed me another puzzle piece. So thank you for being so honest about sharing your journey, and being an encourager. 🙂
