There are a surprising number of people upset over this decision. As an atheist, I struggle to see why this would matter to an atheist. It’s not like I care what people call their god. Some religious people obviously do care, and for me it’s not even about respecting their tradition but making the information as accessible as possible to the closed-minded. If someone has an issue with the pronunciation but wants to learn about the scholarship, that’s someone who has been indoctrinated from birth potentially learning and bringing themselves out of that indoctrination. I’m completely in favor of not putting barriers in their way. It’s just the same reasoning a UA-camr like Paulogia uses for not swearing. Making the content accessible is important, catering to your desire to not care about religious tradition is not.

It could be interpreted as someone trying to impose their beliefs on someone else, which is objectionable to pretty much everyone unless it happens to be their beliefs that are being imposed. It sounds like it was more of a polite request than an imposition, though, so I can understand granting it.

Since Dan is an active member of his church I doubt he is an atheist. However, I am. And while I don’t care what other people call their deities I also like to be considerate of people. For this reason, I don’t swear in some situations because I think it is inconsiderate of some of those present. As others have pointed out, why erect unnecessary barriers when you are trying to communicate with others? As Dan said, it costs little and it makes his words accessible to a wider audience. I can get on board with that, both as an atheist and as a person who prefers to build bridges.

@@splorkon Yes he is a Latter Day Saint, Dan has carefully crafted his response concerning the use of the divine name, I would suggest the following undisclosed reason might explain his true motives.
In orthodox Mormonism, the term God generally refers to the biblical God the Father, whom Latter Day Saints refer to as Elohim.
The term Godhead refers to a council of three distinct divine persons consisting of 1. God the Father (Elohim) 2. Jesus Christ (his firstborn Son, whom Latter Day Saints refer to as Jehovah), 3. and the Holy Ghost.
Therefore, in Dan's worldview Jesus Christ is Jehovah. So to use the name "Jehovah" (or another English language alternative) for the divine name of the Old Testament Supreme God would cause a theological problem for him. Em...🤔.

I once heard that some ancient poetry was discovered
where their version of rhyming words was to have the last word of every line be the same amount of syllables.
They said this is how it was discovered that the full pronunciation of YHWH/YHVH had three syllables, because the poet aligned it with the other three syllable words.
Is there any truth to that?

Hashem just means the name. referring to GOD. keep in mind if ur using a Hebrew word (especially from biblical hebrew) Ha is specific so Ha (The) Shem (Name)

Conversely, there's apparently linguistic evidence that Caanan was heavily influenced or an offshoot of Egypt, possibly during the slavary era. Do you agree? If religious sensibilities matter, why not also affirm the religious beliefs of Jews (or Christians, or whatever)? Many of them are certainly going to be offended by your claims contradicting many of their beliefs. But then, if you use a word meaning "Lord" you're subtly doing just that, for one sect. You imply that this entity really is "the Lord", which may understandably offend other people who think this entity is not the real Lord or God. (Hindus, Wiccans, militant atheists, etc.) I'm not a Muslim, so I don't refer to Muhammad as "The Messenger of God". I'd only say that he's believed by some people to be God's messenger.
It's "costly" in the sense that you thereby endorse a specific religious worldview, implicitly deny others. You're bending the knee.
Do you call Jesus "Lord" too? That would make Christians feel more comfortable. (But if you did that, you'd make Jews and many others uncomfortable.) Of course not.
Maybe it's better not to bother trying to make everyone feel comfortable and included. No matter what you do, you'll offend some "folks". Interesting that you chose for some reason not to offend these ones in particular. You may not want to admit it, but what you're doing is essentially choosing to participate in the cultic practices and taboos of a specific sect. Like atheism, "academic" objectivity seems to bend in certain directions.

Question: Is there/what is the relationship between the Tetragrammaton and the words "I Am"? Is it right to conflate the tetragrammaton (or the name of Adonai) with "I Am"? Does YHWH literally translate to "I Am" the way Adam translates to "man," "Eve" translates to "living," Jacob translates to "supplanter," and Moses translates to "drawn out" [of water]? Several authors, speakers, and singers have claimed over years (maybe centuries) that the name of the God of Israel literally means "I Am." Is that true? Ex 3:14 appears to use a different Hebrew verb for I AM. John 8:58 also uses the Greek "I Am," but the Jews who heard Jesus say it (supposedly in Aramaic) apparently thought it was blasphemous.

Genuine Question, as a sincere atheist, what’s the argument for not saying the word? It seems like some flawed hypothetical syllogism under the premise for Inclusivity by restriction. I’m suspect perhaps by the reason that I’m uninformed of the contentions surrounding the verboten nature of saying a word for a certain community of thinkers. What’s the big deal? Is it a big deal? • @nestycb6702

If I am not mistaken, the cult to the pronunciation of YHWH is a liturgic tradition for a specific community. But, if an individual does not practice that liturgy and/or isn't from that specific tradition, it makes no sense to ask others for the practice of those customs, right?
Also, what is the cult about? Because if it's god's name, saying "the almighty" or "god" or "the Name" is literally the same isn't it? Words carry meaning and are individualized by differences in meaning, so wrongly using god's name would include every way to call god? I guess this aspect is more of a tradition thing than an structuralist analysis of god's wishes, but in that sense, (I have no idea where in the Torah this tradition comes from) it would be sensible to say that if god cares about the pronunciation of YHWH, they would care about being named in general. Thus, saying "god" in "for god's sake" would be equally wrong as pronouncing "YHWH". You can't just say "listen here god, I did exactly what you told me, I used a different signifier you see *mischievous laugh*".
I am genuinely curious about this, no attack intended. Besides I obviously agree that accommodating some people's customs to an extent to be able to reach more people makes perfect sense, although as I said it is a mystery to me how Hebrew liturgic traditions are meant for everybody and not just participants in said traditions.
    Thanks

Just for the record, I don't think it's a reasonable concession. Expecting those not of one's faith to adopt a very arbitrary taboo in your own public and private life is obnoxious in the extreme. If I attend a Jewish service or celebration by choice, I of course adhere to any requested reasonable custom. But using a name that is not offensive for a deity because a subset of a religion doesn't want you to is bowing to unreason.

I do not use that name, the name of the Holy and Terrible, The Dread Lord, the One of whom i am genuinely afraid
BUT it is a legalistic superstition, irrational for thinking that by refusing to use the name one cannot ABUSE it.
yet this is simply not so, one takes his name in vain by doing ungodly things in his name even if his name is not vocalized in theprocess
Legalism is a prime example of this. the effort destroys lives and is a counterfeit obedience, something that in fact the Terrible Sovereign did not command, for it is a countereit response to the commandment which is only fulfiled if we LOVE. and that we most assuredely do NOT do
that no longer daring to vocalize the name of the Judge oif All is a superstition i share means said vocalizing is not a thing i do
BUT it is still an irrational superstition
this showed itself most bizarrely in a jewish friend WHO IS AN ATHEIST threw a fit when i said that name in his presence now many years ago.
it makes for peace to indulge the superstitions of others rather than expose these superstitions, especialy when i share this superstition
