- After a few weeks of studying the internet on these bearcat 980 SSB. I have finally found out which one is dead key and modulation adjustment pods they are fragile so you have to be careful a screwdriver tip of the size 2.0 is the tip that fits the pods. I could not find it on the New Gen radio on UA-cam on how to adjust those it was only on the first gen that I could find so here is your second gen bearcat 980 SSB modulation and dicky power adjustment..
Ok even though it wasn't mentioned in the video of the ssb modulation adjustment. The pod thats rt202 alc which is towards the rear of the radio appears to adjust swing for ssb but I'm not sure if it alters anything else. I'm literally guessing on that from an online thread about the old gen being labeled alc even though numbers were different. Thanks to your video for helping with am dead key and am modulation. My dead key being slightly below 4 i just left it but increased am modulation slightly from 6 full swing to 8 and honestly im happy with that. The ssb modulation was actually more important to me because on the box it advertises 12 watts pep ssb. Mine was only swinging 6 or 7 which is pitiful, after adjusting it swings to 9 which isnt the max but im happier being closer to 10 like it should be. Also i advise anyone making these adjustments to get a free frequency generator app because it will give you more consistent tests on modulation. Your own voice changes tone but putting the phone speaker up to microphone and play a 1k hz tone will tell you exactly how much it swings.
Thank you I have spent so much time trying to find this information, funny thing is I’m going to be running the same amplifier the Pride 100
Good to hear it was helpful. 😁... That's why I did my research and done it myself on my own equipment, I did it because there isn't much information out there on how to do this. I'm happy that the video is helpful to somebody else. 73s to you and your family..
THANKS 😊🙏 You really helped me alot on my 980 ! Thank You ! 😊
I finally did this after watching this video a few times and watched a couple other videos. I set my dead key to 1 watt and my modulation to10 W and hooked up a 100 W amplifier \RM Italy p203\to my Uniden 980 and it’s a bad mf now.
Good job. Should be a big talker.
that will do it for sure
What kind of numbers are you seeing with this setup? I’ve got a KL203P sitting around and I’m considering getting this radio to pair with it.
Really I have a 503 rm italy and a 980sb with a astatic d104 hand power mic so I need to turn dk down
I'm confused and need something clarified. Is the RT 203 AM PWR the dead key adjustor or is it the RT 206 AMC? You corrected yourself but didn't clarify.
I wish you would have shown the side band adjustment
Hi buddy thank you for the shatout
I'am Your Newest Subscriber Great Videos
Which directions are up & down on the pots?
How did you test your modulation? I have the same radio and I think I have my modulation set right but idk if it's set right or not and another thing I made some adjustments to the ssb pots and now when I go into the diag on either USB or LSB and test the RF output I get no power through the SWR meter on sideband
Witch way do you turn the pods for am power and amc to turn them up
Howdy, great video! Can you tell me where you got that screwdriver ? I want to make some adjustments to my bearcat 980SSB. I'm needing to turn it down a bit. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks
Ceramic screwdrivers work good?
Thanks.
When you lowered the dead key, did it also lower the peak power too, or was it still the same peak power?
Thanks for the video! I want one of these radios, but I need to run a small amp with it, so being able to turn down the dead key is a priority.
Yes it is a love hate kinda thing. You just have to adjust them both to find that medium.. and if you want to run a small amp with it Make sure you turn to Digi down to about one watt..
Or run a normal high-drive amp, instead.
Just saying...
Because I'm new to this but willing to try .is the am power pot the one that turns the wattage up on the out put. I have this exact radio ,just bought it brand new and I don't think its even at 4 watts . I have good coax and a good antenna swr is set at 1.3:1 almost flat across from ch 1 to 40 but I'm barely getting out. I was told if I could turn the wattage up that would improve by leaps and bounds. If you wouldn't mind helping me out it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for commenting. To be honest you're not going to get very much out of these radios. It's best to turn the dead key down and get an amp.. this radio might get 7 or 8 watts alone. But 7 or 8 watts isn't much. So really it's best to turn its dead key down to about one and a half to two watts max and buy one of those Italy amps from eBay. They made these radios almost tamper proof with surface mount technology.. not very many people want to touch them.. But those Italy CB amps on eBay are fairly cheap check them out on UA-cam..
@@rickymcdaniel6708 thank you and I turned up 203 205 & 206 just a little bit and you are about spot on I got about 9 watts with the adjustment maxed out . I may change my antenna up to a Wilson 1000 or something .right now I'm running a firestick firefly and it does OK . probably should have went with the firestick fs instead . I'm getting out about what is expected with all stock gear but I'm finding out radios are like race cars when you think you got it how you want it ,you always want more .lol. Thanks for the reply .
To decrease the dead key out put do you turn the pot clockwise or counterclockwise?
Good question to ask - AM dead key increase by turning RIGHT (I don't recommend going above 4W; you'll limit/clip audio) and the SSB turn to the LEFT to increase the output. Mine was 6W on SSB so I adjusted it to 10W. AMC to the RIGHT to increase. BTW, radio performs best at 12V and not at 14V. Beep resistor is 100K ohm and marked "104".
Which direction do you turn the modulation pot to increase modulation? Clockwise or Counter Clockwise?
Turn it clockwise but if you go to far it will fall back down again
I have a stupid? I see how you adjust the am deadkey to run a amp , my ? Is what about SSB is there anything you have to adjust to run a amp on SSB thanks
I never adjusted the ssb. But yes I have seen other videos showing ssb dead key adjustments.
@@rickymcdaniel6708 there's no such thing as a carrier, or "dead key" as you call it on SSB.
I didn't adjust the SSB on this radio. To be honest, I never have adjusted any for ssb. That you would have to find in another video. Ssb is something I have never adjusted.
If you know how to install a turbo echo board in a 980 can you make a video how to do it ? THANKS ALOT !!! 😊
How do you show us this and tell us you don’t remember which is what?
One is for modulation one is for dead key. If you got a set of meters you'll know which one it is when you adjusted it. I wouldn't recommend adjusting without a set of meters.
Don't u have adjust ssb also. ???
Yes
Where is the ssb. Dead key Adjuster
Or do I need plastic cb tools

So you turned the modulation pot all the way up? Or how do you decide how far to turn it up?
I use a set of Dosy power and swr meters.
@@rickymcdaniel6708 I just have a cheaper power/swr meter, is setting the modulation with a meter something you can explain here or should I keep researching?
@@fomocowboy I could do a video on it..what you want to do is modulate into the microphone while slowly turning the pod. And watch the needle when it gets to the highest point before it falls backwards it'll creep up slowly and then it'll get to a certain point to wear it won't go no higher and it will start to fall back at that point when it's at its highest is when you stop turning the modulation pod. If you want to use a amp on the radio you need to turn to dead key down to about 1 or 1 and a half watts of deadkey, if you're using a amp, if not you can turn it up too to the point it will get to its highest and then stop..
@@rickymcdaniel6708 if you did a video on it that'd be awesome, I'll subscribe now and keep an eye out for it, thanks man!
@@fomocowboy thank you for subscribing. I'll get more out soon
You mean "pot's" not "pods"...
Blah blah blah
Blaaaah blaaaaah blahhhhh
