A capitalist is walking through his factory with a friend.
Friend asks, "What did you tell that man just now?"
"I told him to work faster", answers the capitalist.
"How much do you pay him?" asks the friend.
"Fifteen dollars a day" answers the capitalist.
"Where do you get the money to pay him?" asks the friend.
"I sell products", answers the capitalist.
"Who makes the products?" asks the friend.
    "He does", answers the capitalist.
"How many products does he make in a day?" asks the friend.
"Fifty dollars worth", answers the capitalist.
"Then", concludes the friend, "Instead of you paying him, he pays you thirty-five dollars a day to tell him to work faster".
"Huh", and the capitalist quickly adds, "Well, I own the machines".
"How did you get the machines?" asks the friend.
"I sold products and bought them", answers the capitalist.
"And who made those products?" asks friend.
To which the capitalist responds "Shut up! He might hear you".

Then that dude goes "yeah, I don't agree", before redirecting the genuine room for improvement in capitalism into a question of examples of functional communist examples.
Why does every pro-capitalist in this comment section at least have such a polarized view on economic systems? It's the same people who continue thinking in binaries. Boots Riley identifies as a communist, yes, but what he is saying isn't "pure communism", it's still a system wherein you are free to go about your business and have free speech and everything, it's simply the owning class who loses the luxury of hoarding the income from the labor that workers perform.
To make it clearer: There are basic necessities that need to be met, and the obscene length of work days, sapping the life and vitality of people, the actual profit of that labor is often mostly given to the business owners and managers. To think they simply need it to renovate the factory or whatnot is sometimes true in the case of smaller businesses, but
    A. New equipment is bought as workplace luxury to increase profit further, rather than ensuring the workers are.Profit motive gone too far, to the detriment of workers. The customer-worker balance is quite upset here. Especially if you think of how those with financial stability are those who actually go out and buy things that require the finest of manufacturing, which would make the price on such commodities higher, which could fund the workers fine and proper as well as make the factory good to work in.
    B. It's disproportionately given to management so they can have a nicer house, yet the hours they put in is very close to the laborers, or perhaps less.
    C. It's a giant corporation (think Walmart, etc) and the owners are granted absurd amounts of money to spend on luxuries (like say, golf courses, small islands, smaller businesses).
Putting limits on the wealth someone can accumulate per amount of time worked (would apply to the rich owning class that isn't using the money to fund their limited business), would grant people enough funds to live at least a manageable life, prevent massive monopolies from exploiting the masses, make jobs more enjoyable and connected with overall shorter work days needed and probably more that I can't think of right now.
Sorry for the wall of text, but I'm honestly sick of these pro capitalist commenters with very crude language and binary thinking consisting of "wow look at china they are communist and so was stalin, and the nazis were socialists". Uh huh, sure. The Nazis: Death and oppression due to the economic policies, or was there deeper corruption? Stalin: Was an idiot and tried to do away with everything freedom related. That ain't socialism mate. China: A nice classic top heavy dictatorship with lofty ideals and honestly some initiative. I'll be their cheerleader, go China!. But really, it's true that none of those have achieved actual communism.
Also comments with "Oh snap! He's selling things! That's capitalism! No. That's a market. And we do not currently live under a fair and balanced market, which I would infer is one of the selling points of capitalism. People are continually disadvantaged based on where or how or who they are born as, and not everyone can just "work harder". Yes, he's using the system to try and change people's minds. No shit. It's the only way to compete and get people to actually notice the work, because of all the excessive corporate and media ownership. Props to him for using the system in a productive way, rather than pumping out several films that normalize the way things are now.
Also wow! Such vehement hatred towards communists, almost like cold war propaganda hasn't worn off yet. On another note, the fans of this show who make a point of not seeing the film, and commenting about how this man's communism is the reason they won't. That's wild, to completely avoid another person's artistic endeavors based on biases towards their beliefs. Also wild is avoiding contrary viewpoints in order to avoid having the mind change. Also wild is being afraid of change in general. Hey, be open minded, every "side" of a debate has it's valid points, and it's invalid ones., but efforts were always made. Ask the question "why does this person believe this?" and seek answers. Hint: It's not because they are some sheep-human hybrid, or horse, or anything. No sheeple exist. Just humans led to one viewpoint before the other. It's their responsibility to try multiple, and make an informed decision. If you think you've made an informed decision, then you probably haven't listened to the others enough. Life is filled with nuance, and bread. I wonder if this will reach anyone. Probably not. Lots of people in these comments seem impatient and denigrating.

Planned economies failed because the determination of the value of an item in terms of the average labor time under standardized conditions is nearly impossible. That's why Milton Friedman and Fredrich Hayek were against state intervention in the economy, because supply and demand are most optimally determined on an individual basis. That's how revenue is maximized and malinvestments are minimized. The guy in this video not only proved he was a hypocrite, as Jim kept pressing him on, but his arguments were terribly weak. He attempted to say that because he enjoyed making music for its own sake that we can rely on altruism, without any other incentive, to produce highly skilled laborers. Obviously this is fallacious. For one, there's the idea of economic Darwinism. The Eastern Bloc's planned economies all failed. It could take over a decade before someone could buy a car due to the waiting list and the lack of productive capacity. The strongest economies in the world today are all primarily capitalist in function, including the CCP despite its name. The usual response to this is that the CIA sabotaged the USSR and other communist countries. This is an unconvincing counterargument for a few reasons but we'll move beyond them as it's just one round of ammunition. Another way we know that altruism isn't a driving factor is based on application rates to various programs in universities. As sectors boast higher median incomes the pool of applicants to universities for that market increases in response and once the market is saturated and wages are driven down the application numbers decrease correspondingly. That's just proving something we already know, there are a lot more Jeff Bezos's than Mother Theresa's. Next, the guest argued that capitalism is inherently immoral due to alleged rent seeking in every labor transaction. I'm not sure how a mutually agreed upon transaction is anything but immoral. In a communist system your labor could also be exploited by you not being rewarded proportionately due to you producing above the average labor time for a good or service. Not only that but the idea of mutually agreed upon terms of transactions is thrown out the window. So it takes the alleged bad of capitalism and combines it with a destruction of civil liberties, noice. Furthermore, the guest clearly ignored the risk that the business owner takes on when starting his business. Many businesses don't even make a profit for several years and if it goes under he/she could end up in debt with years of their life wasted. In the same vein that a dentist's labor value has to include the years of education that preceded it, so too should that business owner's history factor into the equation. Simply measuring the value of the good/service the worker produced is moronically oversimplified. It's neglecting what I just mentioned in addition to other costs such as marketing, corporate taxes, asset depreciation, etc... The Scandinavian countries are the highest quality of living examples in the world because they found a balance between capitalism and socially conscious programs, which aren't examples of 'socialism' as the guest ignorantly described. There are a number of other things I could critique but that's all the analysis this video's worth lol.

Great discussion for sure, I can see both sides of it since I work producing a product from start to finish but I only make 15% in profit because of investors, now me doing 100% of the work to make said product minus the sales aspect should qualify me for more than %15 right? But that's capitalism in a nutshell. If you can't produce 100% of what it cost to start the business upfront then you have to settle for what you can get. And if you'd want to protest in hopes of a raise there's always a replacement a call away.

Considering many Cubans would rather risk drowning trying to swim to Florida than continue living under communism, my guess would be they rank quite low. Also there's more to Denmark's happiness than just taxes. You really think they Danish are skipping through town saying "I'm so happy the government takes nearly all of my paycheck."

They go into insane amounts of debt. They get no customers or barely any. This is my problem with everything boots talks about. And bear in mind, I get the culture he comes from. I grew up just north of Oakland. I get being an angry working class kid who looks down on the kids from the suburbs because they don't hear gunshots every night. I get thinking that there's a "them" that's manipulating the system and making it so me and my people couldn't catch a break (and I still do to some degree, I just lay the blame on politicians who make silly drug laws to try to ensnare young men in the legal system, then create welfare program incentives to keep those men out of their homes (sure, people could argue that those young men shouldnt have done drugs if they were illegal, but that doesn't make it any less of a corrupt response by the state)). But boots won't tell me who his "they" is, specifically.
