These guys are the best groove rock band ever! Grew up with the lead singer and bassist and his voice is known throughout the rock community. Deep Purple asked him to take over and he said “no I have my own thing“! Just ran across your review in my thread because I saw Kings X and just subbed!!! MORE KX! Check out shoes, cigarettes, groove machine, pillow and their infamous Goldilox!!!!
This band can be a serious rabbit hole for you... I could easily recommend 20 or more songs. I saw them live at least 3 times. They're phenomenal musically and vocally and are only a trio.
In the day they used to be called “thinking man’s metal.” There’s an argument to be made that the heavy sound of 90’s grunge actually began in Texas in the 80’s with this band. They had Christian rock and progressive rock roots, but added soul and a bit of Hendrix vibe to that mix. Ty Tabor was an early advocate of Drop-D tuning, which gave the guitars a deeper and more menacing chunk to them, but his use of a specific limited-run model of Fender Elite Strat and a solid state Lab Series L5 amp is what gave him a tone like no other guitarists of the day. Dug Pinnick bass sound, having to more or less double as a rhythm guitar in the band’s three piece arrangement, came from playing 8 or 12-string basses. That filled in the lows and mids sufficiently for Ty to solo over them without thinning out the mix too much. Then there are the vocals. Ty’s voice almost sounds Lennon-esque, and he sings lead on many songs in their catalogue. Jerry Gaskill, the drummer, also sings back-up. But the vocal star of the show is Dug, who has an unmistakable, confident, soulful voice, instantly making the King’s X sound stand out from the rest of the hard rock/metal crowd. This band is revered by other musicians and bands in a similar fashion to the way Rush is. Unlike Rush, however, they haven’t achieved mega-stardom, which most fans view (myself included) as a colossal example of cosmic injustice. They do well enough to continue as a band and have a cult-like fan base who will never allow them to fail as a commercial entity. That said, most people in the 90’s would have predicted King’s X to be insanely successful and popular, given their obvious talent and creativity. Sadly, the super-stardom that they so richly deserve has thus far eluded them. Watch their more recent live shows in 600-1,000 seat theaters and clubs. It’s like a church service, and everyone in attendance knows all the lyrics to all the songs. You’ll thank me later.
Thank you....great analysis. I have been a huge fan of theirs since the 80's, and have seen them several times. They talk to fans after the show and Dug gave me a poster which they all signed. Very cool. This band fires on all cylinders. Dynamics, complexity, groove, with smooth transitions and amazing vocals. ✌🐾
I saw them late 90's (part of a larger lineup) and had no idea they had already been going nearly 2 decades even back then. Dug (and possibly Jerry) are now in their early 70's..and Ty can't be too far behind. They never became as big as they should have been...probably due to a detour as a Christian backing band in the mid 80's even though they were never Christian artists themselves.
I love seeing new folks get turned on to King's X. I've been a fan of theirs since 1989 and I've seen them 12 or 13 times over the years. They are the nicest guys and they love playing LOUD! It's awesome that you dug them!
Doug had a strong Christian upbringing and that help define his lyrical style. Living in the South me and my friends attended services with our black friends and the way he sings is what church in the black community sounds like. ROCK ON!!!!!!
They have elements of metal, blues rock, funk, soul, and hip hop. I’d say they were a progressive grunge band or an alternative metal band. Unique in their own way wasn’t anything like them except maybe Living Color too a point.
I think they are classified as Progressive Metal. There's all these sub genre within the genre. Try their song Over My Head. This band is one of the most underrated bands out there and still going. They love making music or they would have quit long ago.
Great 👍 reaction. King’s X Is one of my favorite bands I saw them perform at the Fillmore in San Francisco many years back and they were on fire. Lots of energy and great musicianship. Another great song by them is Over my Head. BTW Happy 😃 Birthday!!! My nephew was born in January too.
Yeah man.. thats metal. Great band! Kind of underground, they are often called the bands favorite band. Excellent live!! I love the soul sound of doug pinnicks vocals. They arent a one trick pony, lots of good songs and a fairly big catalogue
They asked him to sing for Deep Purple back in the day...great band! Can’t way for you to do some Fishbone! Ma & Pa, Servitude, Cholly, Bonin’ in the boneyard!! ✌🏻❤️🕺🏻
of course check out all their records.. but also check out Doug's (the singer) "Poundhound" album... notice the spray the powder up in the air line before it was cool in the NBA..
Heavy metal like Rap has MANY styles like Common, Ice Cube, Biggie and Kebrick Lamar same umbrella different flowers underneath check out Moan Jam by Kings X.
@@arsxxmoriendi That was more of an "and" not a "but". Dogman was definitely in a different lane than grunge, but also a shift from the earlier stuff soundwise.
Not metal, but they did tour with some metal bands such as Pantera back in the 90's. Some of their stuff might be considered hard rock, but most isnt at all. Lots of 90's grunge bands credit Kings X for the drop D sound that defined early grunge.
Being labeled a Christian band hurt them early on. Spiritual doesn’t mean Christian, If you see them live, Doug’s sermons during the break in Over My Head can be hard on organized religion. Who are these people behind the stained glass windows? Have they forgotten what they came here for? They can’t be categorized, which is also why they never achieved the success they deserved. They are unique and incomparable.
Is that heavy metal? Truth is, no one's ever been able to "categorize" them and that's been one reason a lot of people suggested they never "made it big."
Not heavy metal, I think King's X is technically a "progressive rock" band (like Rush) but... since they did invent Grunge I guess you could also call them a Grunge band but honestly I don't think they fit into a category which is part of the reason they're not bigger than the Beatles. You can't put them in a box.
Musicians love this band and widely consider them the "godfathers of grunge."Thing is,if you take in their catalog...you just can't put a label on them, other than real good music.Actually,a lot of their stuff is really weird, even for a die-hard fan like me.Give them a listen and you are bound to put a boatload of King'sX on your Playlist. Keep rocking!
I've never heard of this group, but it's not really my genre. I liked it more than I thought I would because you could really hear the blues influence (I love the blues). It would be interesting to hear another track from them. They may not become a new favorite for me, but I appreciate learning about other peoples favorites. Thanks.
They have been around since 1980. They do vary as good bit at times from album to album. They are getting ready to put out another soon. Gretchen goes to Nebraska is one of their fan faves from the early years.
@@TommiBrem Cool! I was fortunate enough to see them play in a couple of small joints when "The Real Thing" first came out, before they started to take off. A theater in Philly and a club in Baltimore. Friggin' awesome!
Dude, you gonna need an appointment book and start dropping your reaction videos to premiere at a certain time slot with all of the special requests you are getting.
My favorite band by far. There was a span of ten or so years that, if you got in my truck, you were gonna hear King's X.

Try Music Over My Head....very similar to Dogman
Lost In Germany is addictive.
@@whoworks1302 I'll add just listen to all of Gretchen Goes to Nebraska. Masterpiece. Dogman, Faith Hope Love and Ogre Tones are fantastic as well.
The greatest band you've never heard of!...until NOW!
