8:26 FUN FACT: Sonic can’t swim because his creators incorrectly assumed that Hedgehogs couldn’t swim. They indeed can.

Sonic 3&K is easily the best game. I haven’t played it recently because I don’t have Origins so the last time I played was Sonic Mega Collection. The entire game is good. That’s all I have to say about it. Sandopolis is tedious but that’s really it. Not bad. The story is amazing. Zones, music, all of it. Mecha is no Metal but he’s cool. Hyper Sonic is redundant and I don’t miss the form but it’s still a cool prize. The bosses are fun. Knuckles routes and final boss is great and also nice redemption for him after his pathetic fight with Sonic. Hydrocity is the best classic zone. I don’t care how it’s pronounced. I say it both ways. Both make sense. But it’s the best zone imo. It’s got everything done perfectly. Speed, platforming, secrets, a good boss, the best music…both acts. The aesthetic is good, it has multiple pathways, awesome visuals, this zone is everything. It is THE Sonic level imo. Blue sphere is ok but it used to make me dizzy as a kid. It’s fun tho. Prefer Sonic 2’s half pipe, sue me. The music I gotta talk about. I love the plain Sonic 3 Knuckles theme and the act 1 boss theme is one of the best but it’s fine that they aren’t around anymore. The 3 zones is what I have to talk about. The Michael Jackson tracks were so good and it’s upsetting that they had to be replaced. Carnival Night got the best deal imo. The music isn’t bad. I actually like it. Do I prefer it? No, but I am fine with it. Still get the same feel. Ice Cap is next. I like this one too. It’s ok. I hate the snowboarding sequence with the proto music. Just doesn’t fit. Hard Times just feels like it fits it more. The rest of the zone is fine with the new theme tho. But Launch Base….oh man. This took the biggest hit for me. I loved that “go go go” mess. It got me pumped. The new music is awful. It’s just so bad. It is the only one of the three that makes the zone worse imo. Like, if I do get Origins, I don’t know if I’d be excited to play Launch Base now. It’s not the same. I know everyone loves Ice Cap’s theme and I could see many thinking that took the biggest hit. But for me it’s Launch Base. That zone’s music was more integral to it for me. Still great game. The perfect culmination of all that the other games had been building up.

Sonic 2 is great. It’s greater emphasis on speed makes it instantly better than Sonic 1. Better zones, music, palette. Emerald Hill is a great zone. It’s just a little too short with a pathetic boss in the end. Chemical Plant is amazing. There’s some stop and wait segments but they aren’t too bad like the slow blocks and spikes in Marble. You can outright skip the infamous water segment either by good timing and speed or by going through the hidden path. The boss, I’ll be honest. No idea what he does. I cheese it. Aquatic Ruin is great fun. The first act I usually speed through but the second I like to pick which path I take. I like both. The top path is fast obviously but the water path can also be very speedy. It’s fun. The boss is cool too. Casino Night is good. Just don’t get sucked into gambling your rings lol. There are some slow moving blocks but nothing bad. The boss is a cool here too. Hill Top is alright. It’s probably the slowest zone with the seesaw and rising lava and the gondola platform things. I don’t hate it but I think this is the zone most like Sonic 1. Mystic Cave is one of the best zones in terms of music and aesthetic. Speed, platforming, secrets, all here. The biggest obstacles are probably those firefly badniks that are invulnerable when lit. I hate the boss those. Never been good at the dodging debris thing. That’s why I elect to go to Hidden Palace. The boss is easier(I know some struggle on figuring out how to attack him at first). The zone is very cool and like the other two water levels you never have to touch the water. Oil Ocean is one of my favorites. I can understand the dislike for Labyrinth. It’s not very Sonic-y in design. But Oil Ocean has so many routes, so much speed, fun platforming! What’s to hate? The seahorse badniks aren’t so bad. They only really get me I the opening of act 2. The boss is cool on a first playthrough but then it becomes a waiting game on later playthroughs unless you have Super Sonic and everyone that isn’t 8 should have him by this point imo(for like Origins and the mobile port). Metropolis is kinda bad. It’s got speed and secrets and fast platforming. All that great Sonic stuff that Sonic 2 has been really good with up to this point and still. But the enemy placement…only zone where enemy placement is an issue for me. I have noticed that sometimes enemies like the green ones don’t have their slicers(that the name?) in the mobile port when you’re the normal character which is good but the crabs are still a pain. Tails can make the starfish trigger sooner if he is with you. All that said, I don’t really hate Metropolis tho I still consider it bad. The reason is because Super Sonic evens things out. The boss is fine. Nothing to say about it. Sky Chase is boring. No matter what you do, you cannot make it go any faster. Wing Fortress is fun. I like that you can skip parts of the level and even if you play through it normally, not too hard. Super Sonic really makes this a breeze because he can jump over everything and got right to the end. The laser boss is ok. Silver/mecha/whatever Sonic is easy. He’s an absolute joke. The Death Egg robot is easy if you aren’t needlessly making it harder for yourself. Just never get behind it and never hit him as he’s marching unless you’re a pro and have precise timing. I’m not a pro so I don’t bother. I just get one free hit in as the robot comes from the ground. Hit him when he stops marching. Hit him twice when he lands. Hit him again after he shoots his arms out. Hit him again when he lands again(for some reason I can’t do it twice). Rinse and repeat. Should take two cycles before he’s down. Not hard and/or tedious if you don’t want it to be. The endings are both great. I know many like the normal ending because Tails saves Sonic and yea it’s more impactful. But I like the Super Sonic one too. The fact Tails even showed up for his friend just in case is still meaningful. The special stages are fun imo. Well, the enhanced versions. The half pipe is simple and mildly challenging. It’s not too hard at all. And with multiple checkpoints and the ability to restart in later versions, there’s no excuse not to have Super Sonic. Even if one isn’t going out of their way to stop at every checkpoint, you should have all emeralds before Oil Ocean at the the latest. Overall Sonic 2 is a great game and like any sequel should, it improves on the foundation that the first game set in every single way.

I like Sonic 1. Great soundtrack and no zone is bad…except Scrap Brain. Sonic 1 is what I would call a very good platformer…just not much of what we know as a Sonic platformer. Green Hill is great. Hidden objects, multiple pathways, speed, platforming, manipulation of said speed to reach specific areas. It has it all. Perfect first level in video games ever and there is ZERO debate. I won’t hear it lol. The boss is ok. It’s easy but not pathetic imo. Not like the drill car of Emerald Hill. Marble is a good zone. Just not very Sonic. There’s still secret areas and paths to get too but the issue is you are stuck for a good portion doing nothing but waiting. There are still moments in the zone where you can do things at your pace like the invincibility so you can get through this one part quicker. There’s the end of act 3 where you can platform as fast as you want. These moments are just few. Decent boss. Spring Yard is a speedy zone with some good platforming. But then there’s the slow moving blocks which are a drag. I theres one part where you can hop over the section but I think most of the time you have to sit through them. There is the end of one the acts where you can flip a switch that takes you to the end tho. The boss might be my favorite one in Sonic 1. Labyrinth is a good level. I said it. Not very Sonic, but it’s good. Sure it may not have speed, but it’s got challenging platforming and secrets, and hidden paths, shortcuts. I get through this zone without ever being hit. And I’m no pro at games. It’s not the best zone, far far far from it. Nowhere near the best water level even. But it’s a good and fairly challenging zone. Patience is speed. One can get through this pretty fast if they aren’t mindlessly blitzing. Starlight is a great zone. Brings back speed. Not has challenging as the last zone but it’s not a cakewalk either. It’s very short tho. Like really really short. Boss is cool. Second favorite. Scrap Brain is garbage. Right out the gate there’s a trap door with a bottomless pit…who did this? This is one zone I do struggle not getting hit in. It’s very annoying. And I know I just talked about how I like Labyrinth but act 3 of Scrap Brain I rolled my eyes. Did we need Labyrinth act 4? There is the shortcut that makes it over before it began but still. The final boss isn’t hard, just tedious. Death Egg is light years better. The one thing outside of Scrap Brain that I hate in Sonic 1 are the special stages. Worst classic special stage ever and it’s not even close. Sure, being able to restart in later ports makes it better, but the lack of control in these are painful to have to play. And all you get is a slightly different end for getting all the emeralds. Waste of time. Worse special stage. Overall Sonic 1 is a very good game. Just not the best Sonic game. It’s a good introduction tho. Gets you used to speed, platforming, water, secrets, all that good stuff. After Green Hill isn’t that bad. Definitely not nearly as bad as many claim. Only trash zone is Scrap Brain imo.

Sonic CD is an odd one for me. Might be my least favorite of the classic games….but I still like it lol. It’s my least favorite story too(not a fan of time travel). The muffled sound affects like the jumping is weird along with the silent roll attack. The peel out is fine. I don’t miss it in other games but it’s ok here. Cool visual. I use it more than the spin dash because it’s faster but I usually roll(also I don’t like the sound of the spin dash in this game lol). The animated shorts are amazing tho! And the soundtrack is one of the best in the franchise. The JP version. The US is good, certainly has its own share of bangers, but it’s not the JP version. There’s some tracks I do prefer, really just the US Tidal Tempest and Sonic Boom. That’s it. Lets be honest, the US track is good, but not great. Not Sonic great. And the JP version I’m pretty sure is widely considered the official or main version as it’s used for Generations and Mania. And no matter the version, the JP past themes are on both which makes the US version a little jarring. Palmtree panic is a good zone. CD Zones(mostly) have a direct parallel to Sonic 1 zones. This one is basically Green Hill with triangles rather than squares. Those ramps are cool. Nice music. The boss is pathetic tho. Amy’s here and she’s cute tho she’s essentially pink Sonic in her classic design. I like her(make her playable again, Sega). Collision Chaos is kinda like Spring Yard with more springs and bumpers. Amy is here again along with Metal Sonic, Egg man’s best creation. The zone is fine if a little annoying but the music is great. The boss is annoying but not hard. Tidal Tempest is like Labyrinth but more speed is here so it’s better by default. It’s a good zone. The boss is another chase like in Labyrinth except this time there’s a fight in the end and I like it. Quartz Quadrant with it being in a cave and having outside portions, feels like this is the parallel to Marble. This is one one of my favorite zones. It’s especially fun to speed through. The boss is a neat concept but it’s weak. You just hold right, stop, jump, hold right. Wacky Workbench is an annoying stage with annoying hazards. Easily my least favorite of them all. This is also the one zone that’s entirely unique without a Sonic 1 counterpart. The past music is goofy but I love it lol. The boss is easy. Just hit Eggman and stand on either the left of right. You’ll never get hit. Stardust is great fun. Some don’t like it because there’s the flip signs that change where you go with no visual indication. The boosters that sends you flying all over. Some struggle with the speed tubes. I love this zone. The boss is a race against Metal which is great. There’s obviously some rubber banding but the race is so fun and no matter how you play, it’s exciting! You CAN absolutely dust Metal and prove show him he’ll never be Sonic. You can have the race be neck and neck and barely edge him out. Or if you’re behind, you can make a comeback. It’s fun. Oh and Amy is here. Eggman never use that insta death laser again for some reason. We know he has no issue retreading old mechs lol. Also this zone is like starlight. Metallic Madness is a better Scrap Brain in every way. It’s super maze like tho and there are gimmicks that are confusing like the slow pillars being able to launch you up high. Who would think they’d do that? The game punishes you with one wrong move you will be starting sections of those zone over. I’ve gotten timeouts here lol. The boss is pathetic but not as tedious as Sonic 1’s. Also you have rings here…and this is the final boss. The credits have good animations. I like both endings. Sonic flinging a rock at Robotnik is funny. The credit song I prefer cosmic eternity over Sonic Boom again. The special stages I hate. The ufos even in later ports are hard to hit. They can juke you, sometimes you go under them. They’re annoying to hit imo. It’s a little bearable since you can stay in the stage and you can restart them, but they’re annoying. Half pipe is better. These are still better than Sonic 1 tho. I prefer the generators method which is a hot take. I do for a few reasons. Firstly, I know where they are so I don’t struggle getting them. I will never recommend this way to new players. Some of these generators are annoying to fine and no way someone finds some of these on their own. I believe it is impossible. I know where they are so I find them. The other reason I go this method is because I love all the tracks so much and this way gets the most out of the tracks. Also get the most out of the level design. Overall, it’s a fine game and the soundtrack alone is enough to pick it up. The main reason to pick it up(hearing the music with the zones is better than just YouTubing the soundtrack imo). Not terrible, but one of the classic games has to be the worst and this is that one.
