- Wien Neêrlands bloed (Those in whom Dutch blood) was the national anthem of the Netherlands between 1815 and 1932. There exist two versions of the song: the original, and a changed version created for the reign of Queen Wilhelmina. This second version modernised the language, adapted the text to the fact there was now a queen instead of a king and also replaced a controversial second line. This is the version shown here. Wien Neêrlands bloed was officially replaced by the more popular Het Wilhelmus on 10 May 1932.

'De Koningin" Queen Beatrix, retired in 2013, and her son was installed King Willem-Alexander, 'de Koning'.

I haven’t a clue as to why people made the lyrics ‘van vreemde smetten vrij’ (free from foreign taint) controversial. I mean, which country wouldn’t want their land to be free from foreign taint?

You misunderstand the original. In the second line, "van vreemde smetten vrij" refers to our Dutch blood, being free from foreign stains, not our Dutch land.
So keeping our blood free from foreign stains is regarded as racist. Supporting racial purity in The Netherlands. These days, through immigration, especially from Morocco, Turkey etc, or Dutch people marrying foreigners etc, 'the Dutch blood' of Dutch citizens, has many different strains in it, not 'stains' .

Yep. We did not have a national anthem until the 1930's. This, Wier Neerland Bloed, was in practice a second national anthem - the Wilhelmus always was the more important one. The fascists of the NSB preferred the (racist) Wier Neerlands Bloed and that resulted in the decision to make the Wilhelmus the official anthem. Something similar happened with the flag.

There were 4 in succession, and each was respected as fine Queens who served their country long and well.
Please tell us WHY you think one of them better than the other three? You are a Republican? Or just uninformed opinion?
In actual historical fact, Juliana (and her disgusting husband) was the only one of them who almost brought the Dutch monarchy down!
@@theon9575 No need to be quite so condescending. Juliana was a great Queen who, out of the three, is my favourite! Wilhelmina & Beatrix were also great Queens. Berhard was a most unpleasant man, I agree. He looked pathetic at Princess Juliana’s funeral, faux mourning a woman he treated so appallingly.

I do not agree that one stands out more than the other three. And I asked WHY you think one does. That's not being condescending.
(PS. Not only was Prince Bernhard an "unpleasant man", he was dishonest and immoral in his personal life, was not loyal to the Queen and betrayed his daughters born within and outside his marriage, and he was criminally corrupt in his business life. But we're talking about the 4 queens)

Problem with this that makes me hesitant is that the kingdom of Yugoslavia anthem isn’t really a monarchist song. It has no mention of the monarchy, and all the component parts of the anthem have since been used by republics and even communists

Like our former Queen Wilhelmina did, hopefully a future Queen will addempt this anthem in change of the "Wilhelmus" which is also patriotic but boring as hell.
