Good idea but very expensive to buy in the UK. A 10mm one costs over £12 and 12-14mm costs in excess of £16. Even then they were very hard to find. There are plenty on offer for steel wire but not so for rope.

Absolutely not. With the right knot the rope will break before the knot does.

If my rope is 1/2 " do I use 1/2 " clap

It really depends on the type of rope being used. If you are using a solid braid rope, then yes, 1/2" clamp will work. If you are using a double braid rope (a braided jacket over a braided core) then you will be better off going with the next size up...like the 5/8" clamp. I hope this helps.
