Sometimes you ride a river rafting ride, and you think to yourself... Why is this mountain shaped like a bear? Why is there a surfer dude asking me to keep my hands, arms, feet and legs inside the raft at all times? Well, wonder no longer. Today I'm here to give you the rundown on the story, both fictional and factual, of Grizzly Peak.

Any good Disney story begins with Michael Eisner. Eisner being both the alpha and omega, the yin and yang, the Splash Mountain and the Superstar Limo.
He is Severus Snape. So much good, so much bad...
The Little Mermaid and Chicken Little.
I'm the Omega. Get your facts straight
The EuroDisney and the Tokyo DisneySea
He’s the........................................
Gee, i don’t know what he is you people already put the all the best ones
All I want is a big ass bear animatronic in the cave
That would be halla cool
It would have to be a GOOD animatronic otherwise it’s going to cheapen the attraction.
Quote from Michael Isner
Platinum Fist Same!
Some animatronic animals like a big-ass bear!
Hay we might get a DISCO BEAR!
I don’t love the California Theme for a theme park but ironically, the California portions are my favorite parts with Grizzly Peak being my favorite
But slowly their all getting replaced with stuff that’s popular at the time like paradise pier was rethemed to pixar pier, condor flats was rethemed to the grizzly peak airfield, and a bugs land is getting replaced with the avengers campus
I miss the old DCA
It holds a special place in my heart for not only being a fun place but it introduced me to the Disney parks, and if it weren’t for this park and it’s neighbor Disneyland park I wouldn’t be into the Disney parks nowadays
I’ve only been to Disneyland in California but that’s about to change because in February for my high school graduation I’m going to disneyworld
I think it's definitely improved since opening day. It was kitschy California at first, a cheap knockoff. Now it's a sort of homage to the National Parks and culture of California. Aside from Cars Land and Avengers Campus, of course.
@@OffhandDisney I definitely prefer all versions of Paradise Pier, to Pixar Pier.
Offhand Disney I agree but I still miss the tower of terror with an abandoned hotel aesthetic, now mission breakout just ruins the view from the hotels or the freeway.... Or the view from Knott’s Berry Farm
I prefer timeline 3; where Grunkle Stan buys the rafting service and has his Mystery Shack employees work the place.
Oh thanks, now I gotta just be disappointed until they decide to open a Mystery Shack darkride, which will probably be never.
You mean soos buys the rafting service
Ah they should totally re-theme that whole area to gravity falls
*WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWNN*
change grizzly peak to grunkle peak
As a native Californian who grew up in the parks, I’m kinda glad they’re phasing our the kitschy California-themed stuff. Cars Land was a perfect addition because it’s very California-esque without looking or feeling cheap like the rest of the park did for a while in the beginning. I am still nostalgic for all the kitschy-ness, don’t get me wrong, but I think it was time to move forward lol. I agree that the Grizzly Peak area is the most peaceful area in both parks and it’s a great spot to rest a bit when I feel overwhelmed by the crowds and noise :)
When i first read the title my dyslexia kicked in and i saw it as "Glizzy Peak"
"They have it! GRIZZLY Peak."
If only
Hotdog mountain! 😂
Grizzly peak was always the part of California Adventure I wanted to see the most...mostly because of the awesome roaring animation from the Disney DVD in the mid 2000s
Grad night was my first experience with CA, I was amazed how big that parking lot really was.
Grizzly peak is like my favorite part of California Adventure idk why
Maybe it’s because it’s the shape of a bear 🐻
saaaame
Fr tho
It’s one the last remaining sections of CAP that still actually pays homage to California’s culture and environment. They took away Soarin over California (now “World”), Hollywood Tower of Terror, and lots of small attractions and “fair/carnival games” that focused on California. I miss those...
Because it is the best 😂
I like time line one cause I love that Disney is giving Humphrey the Bear the attention it deserves
Despite it being called “Grizzly Peak”, when I was a kid, I thought the mountain was supposed to resemble a howling wolf 😅
It was! Im so disappointed he didn't talk about that. The original "peak" was carved into a howling wolf, and after the work was done, somebody pointed out to Eisner the awkward truth that wolves had been gone from California since the 1920's. So since it was ALSO pointed out that the BEAR is what is on the state flag, and is STILL extremely widespread and plentiful in California, they went through the expense, time, and trouble to have it re-sculpted into a BEAR before opening day.
Shoddy research, Offhand Disney.
whutzat That’s really interesting!
I also thought it was a wolf XD
@@whutzat idk if that's true, but the snout definitely resembles a wolf more than a bear.
Thank you! I distinctly remember the original commercial involving the sound of a wolf howling and didn't understand why I thought it was a wolf for a long time.
grizzly river run is the most underrated ride
When I still had an Annual Pass, my kids would go on that ride repeatedly when the lines were short. It didn't matter to them if it was towards evening and the sun had set or was setting and it had cooled off. They'd get on, with my wife and I along with them, then we'd get off and my kids would get right back in line, sometimes, if it was slow enough, they wouldn't even have to get off the raft to ride again.
Riceball01 I used to do that, most the time the employee was chill so they usually let me ride it like 5 times
I know that and pirates were the two rides I did the most in my last multi day multi pass visit
i love this ride!! its always a blast to go on and its so overlooked!
It’s my favorite but no one ever wants to ride it with me! 😭
I just got the Pirate’s Life candle for my birthday, and it smells just like the ride!! When it’s lit, the burning smell of a regular candle combined with the water smell makes it smell just like the part of the ride where the buildings are on fire. I miss Disneyland so much, and this candle makes me so happy! 10/10 would recommend! Thanks Offhand! Keep being awesome! Love your videos!!
I really liked the old dca. I liked eating ice cream while California dreaming played. It's a nice memory.
The old grizzly river info speil sounds like Chris mcclean from total drama island
I love that show
I love the idea that Disneyland was built right next to a real mountain in the ride's cannon
That old early 2000s CGI Grizzly Peak brought back memories I honestly don't remember having but is so extremely clear
Walt Disney Loved Bears which is why there was Humphrey the Bear Episodes that Donald Duck starred in, Also we had Winnie The Pooh, Country Bears Jamboree, and Balloo from The Jungle Book, it was very Disappointing when they Rethemed Country Bears Jamboree as Winnie The Pooh Attraction, there is really no reason why they couldn't have at least made room for our Favorite Pooh Bear and leave Country Bears Jamboree Alone, this is an Amazing UA-cam Film! Thank you for sharing this with us Dallin, and yes to Answer your question I Love Candles Actually the Disney ones you shared with us! I never knew anything about Grizzly Bears. Thank you again!
You need to be an intellectual to fully understand DCA 1.0
@@fastforwardvideos2752 lol

If only I had a big enough brain
Thank you, Micheal Eisner.
Yes my lord
Tower of terror (DCA , WDSP) Also take place in the SEA which also means the whole of DCA 2.0 apart from cars land also takes place in this universe. In DCA and WDSP the Walt Disney company is regularly mentioned as existing. This also means the Paris version of rock n rollercoaster and studio tram tour take place in this universe (although they are both defunct attractions now) although the DCA version of the tower is gone. This means that only the paris tower can take place here. What's interesting with Paris is that one of the scenarios in the service elevator shaft contains the laughter of shiriki utundu. How did he get into the hotel? it is likely that sometime after 1912 the hotel Hightower unfortunately was demolished with some of the items found inside being donated or bought off by other wealthy people. The Hollywood tower hotel's architect (Theodore Faller) likely took inspiration from the past designs of Harrison Hightower to design his own hotel (T shaped wings on the top of the building)
It sounds like one of those stories that have changed hands so many times and gone through so many revisions over the years that whatever really happened has been lost to the pages of history. I prefer the Native American/National Park version because I love legends of Native American culture, the best in my area being the Sleeping Giant in Connecticut.
Ah, I was hoping that somone would ask because I would be happy to.
Note: This is a legend of the Quinnipiac tribe and after doing some pretty extensive research the following is the best, and hopefully most accurate, version I have found. According to the Quinnipiac tribe "Hobbomock", as the giant was called, was a good natured and very helpful protector, sort of a giant stone gollum. He taught the people of the tribe how to take care of the land and water and how to commune with nature. As time passed however, the tribe members began to forget how to communicate with the animals and this ability began to fade. This made Hobbomock unhappy, even angry, at his peoples' neglect of their ancestoral abilities, and one day he blew off some of that steam by stomping his foot near the area that's known today as Middletown. The impact of his foot into the Earth caused the nearby river, known today as the Connecticut River, to change direction. Seeing the threat that Hobbomock now posed to the humans the good spirit Keihtan, who was probably equally as disappointed with Hobbomock now, cast a spell on him, putting him to sleep forever and terraforming him into a granite and basalt mountain just to make sure he stays asleep. The mountain is known today as both the Sleeping Giant and Mount Carmel and is located in the town of Hamden. The Connecticut River flows south towards Long Island Sound and at the giant it curls around the top of his "head". There is a stone lookout tower at the summit (his "chest") that was built in 1936 and the area was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 4th, 1986. It now operates as a state park and yes, you can hike up the mountain. Just be careful, be respectful to the nature of the area, remember to pack the most essential gear and above all, try to tread lightly so as not to wake Hobbomock from his slumber. 😉 The best part (for me anyway) is that I live right across the Sound from Hobbomock on the north shore of Long Island so I have a clear view of him every day. Pretty sweet! 🙂
I always like walking thru that part of CA and also soarin’ at night if I’m just trynna chill. I’d love to see more soarin’ videos it be pretty cool, love the vids man
It would be nice to have another mountain roller coaster too + the water ride
My parents have been divorced my whole life and taking me to Disneyland together was the closest I got to a normal family trip with my mom and dad. I remember them arguing over if the mountain was a bear or a wolf 😂. I remember that vividly.
Shoddy research, Offhand Disney.
whutzat that’s pretty cool and something I didn’t know!!! Thank you ☺️
Hmm I suddenly want a churro and flight of passage candle
I have the audio loop from Grizzly Peak Airfield on my phone, and I listen to that thing every day while sitting in my backyard for at least 20 minutes. Great video as usual!
And the whole video I only had one question:
*Does it connect to Grizzly Gulch in Hong Kong?*
I mean the two stories can match up... kind of? I mean Grizzly Gulch is set in a Northern California Mining Town. Maybe the government allowed Bro Guy Person to use it as a sports area but then he abused and started damaging some stuff then the US Government just took it back and made it into a National Recreational area but who knows. I just really really want it to be connected to S.E.A. Since it’s a Disney Park Original Ride after all.
We are the magic makers... and we are the dreamer's of the dreams! Make it so Grasshopper!
Coyote: “I’ll make you into stone so you can never be driven away!” Humans: “Lol gold do shine shine.”
even though i’ve lived in california my entire life i still miss postcard california adventure
Same
You have to admit the new update is at least good
Jim Sprigg i’m just tired of disney basing rides off of movies and not making anything original like matterhorn or big thunder mountain, ya feel?
@@lindskahlifa EXACTLY
personally i like the new one. so much prettier and really represents disney’s improvements and skills nowadays
As a "surfer dude" in Orange County from the 80's I like the national park story better!
When I was a kid I swear there was a little scene set up to make it look like a bear had eaten some rafters who were camping along the river? did I dream that? maybe I misinterpreted some generic extreme sports themeing? Either way, that ride was always super thrilling and scary to me as a kid.
I remember seeing the Ad on old VHS tapes that promoted California Adventure opening.
Back before they changed the wolf into a bear.
I ordered Mansion, Splash, Pirates life and Haunted Holliday. Also a pixie dust hand santiser. Love them big time. The whick is wood!! How cool. Mansions flame actually sizzles!! I am ordering more with your offhand 15!!!! Thank you for the video. Super cool as always. Stay safe and healthy and God bless💖💜💛💚💙❤
The old surfer voice for rafting 🥺 I missed that
It's been many years sense I last watched one of these videos, and the Magic Candle Company is still sponsoring videos, must be doing a wicked job.
Great video! We bought the old Toyota pickup that is in the video and used to sit as a prop at that ride. In the process of getting it running now so that we can actually drive a piece of DCA!
1
I really love the quiet, laid-back feel. It's a blessed relief from all the rush and loud and hyper-rrality feel of Buena Vista area and the rush of what is now Pixar Pier.
I like the historic California theme a little better especially how it ties in with other areas in the park's historic CA areas. Both are really nice for those of us coming back to visit home and enjoying both parks while getting that additional nat'l park experience without the extra travel and $.
I like the timeline where California Adventure isn’t a horrible park
Magic candle company should make a candle that smells like the galactic burger from galactic grill so i can feel at home again
I am old school. A candle that smells like the garlic parmesan ripple fries that you used to get from the Space Place Restaurant in Tomorrowland would be great. That space is just used for the queue, & fastpass machines for Space Mountain!
Hello from Phoenix Arizona!🔥
Wouldn’t it be awesome if Bumber McFarren’s neon-clad skeletal remains were somewhat hidden within the attraction?
I work at grizzly river run and am so happy to finally see a video talking about the legend!
the roar inside the cave when on the ride at night IS TERRIFYING
Melting Magic Candle Company's "Walt's Office" today. This stuff is seriously good, I can vouch for it and the Haunted wax.
Offhand Disney my man, the videos you do take me back to 2008 when I went to Disney World for the first time. It was some of the happiest times of my childhood. Keep up the great work, my friend.
PS: my favorite storyline was the national park.
I always love your end card affirmations~ Thanks for creating such awesome content all the time!
As a local of southern CA, I'm happy they decided to re-vamp the park, as well as change the vibe for Grizzly Peak and the surrounding areas. Makes so much more sense. Having camped all throughout CA, it really does feel like you're in a national park!
Also- timeline 1 for sure!
1:35
You mean the already California-themed California?
The biggest bit of irony is the part in Soarin' over California where you fly over orenge groves, because the whole Disneyland property used to be orenge groves...it doesn't get more California-themed than literally making a ride out of something that was already here
The new theme is better. But it was a pretty great parking lot too.
For a hot second, I thought this was your first video about Disney California Adventure. Nope, this is your fourth. Still, the second theme park in Anaheim deserves more attention. Also, 02:01 Maroon Bells!
...um... did he say, um, maroon balls?
@@michaelsullivan3581 You forgot the "Huh, huh, he said..."
Love this part of the park. I think the national park storyline is the best.
I was honestly not thrilled about the retheming of condor flats but it grew on me the more I learned to enjoy the serenity that came with the new area.
Don’t worry offhand Disney, I’m putting your code to good use
I worked at Disneyland the summer California Adventure opened. I remember a lot of cast members that decided to make the jump to the new park regretting it because of all the cringy crap around that park. The new-old Los Angeles version is much better. Its hard for tourist to see the real classic Los Angeles in the vast sprawl but its there if you look hard enough and Disney did a good job at recreating it. There's pockets of oldtown suburbs around LA county as well that have the classic buildings but sadly many have fallen into disrepair.
True.
Agreed.
I also love the national park themed areas, it's so relaxing! Definitely a nice break from some of the chaos of other areas. The grizzly river run cats are also an added bonus :)
Also realizing I'd love an offhand disney podcast!!
I love seeing all the late 70's-90's cars at 1:17.
Not gonna lie, by far one of my favorite videos of yours! I would love to see more land dissections like this!
I feel like I'm the only one who loved Condor Flats. I miss the focus on flight. I know you can still find some traces of it, like the hall of fame in the Soarin' queue and some planes in the gift shop, but IDK, I still miss it.
The only ride that hasn’t had an IP tied to it... yet
Oh man, that early CG animation of grizzly peak brings back the NOSTALGIA for me
Thanks for your uploading. 👍
I have to agree, the Grizzly Peak area is my favourite place in all of Disneyland. It’s just so beautiful and peaceful, and I just love forests and mountains.
I worked the grizzly river run from 2007 to 2013. I could tell storys for days based on my experience working there
Tell us some!
"haunted" is a really great scent. Jungle is great too. But I love the musky vanilla from h.m
A suggestion for a future show: Disney in the 90 did a huge celebration in Goderich Ontario Canada. Walt and Goderich have a history as Walt visited the town and the town square looks awfully familiar to a certain theme park. Plus the family history there. Etc... You can see videos of the Wald Disney World parade that went through this town on UA-cam. A forgotten history...
i don't think i ever noticed the story tablet about the story of Grizzly Peak. i love this ride even more now. and as far as which version i like...well i like them both. but i do enjoy the retheme of the area...it works with the flow a lot better.
Once I saw this video after school I immediately had to click on it. You always bring me joy after my longest days. Thanks for always being there Offhand.
“I think we can all agree that Grizzly Peak belongs to one person and one person only...”
Thought you were gonna say Jean LaFitte lol
I kinda ironically enjoyed the California themeing of California Adventure, especially Pacific Warf and Paradise Pier because they were literally themed around my hometown. It's funny and surreal to see the "theme park version" of a place you go to every day
Zelda series: "So it's a split timeline."
Disney: "Cool, can I borrow your work?"
Zelda series: "IDK it might be confusing for people..."
Disney: "Nah! It's perfectly understandable."
Me: "Why did you make SPLIT timelines?!"
I like Grizzly Peak as an area, it’s does give me Disney-fied outdoors vibes. I enjoy the river run and my favorite part is the photo spot near the peak. I was so excited when they asked me to do the “look at this spot and act surprised” thing and told me they’d photoshop in the cub from Brother Bear, because I taught in rural Alaska and my kids were INTO that movie. Sadly it was singlehandedly the ugliest picture of my trip so I couldn’t share it. I don’t even understand how the photographer let that one go on to the PhotoPass people.
These lore and origins videos you make are awesome keep it up
I wanna stay at the grand Californian 🥺
I have eaten in the restaurant there, I always wanted to stay there. Ive only stayed at the Paradise Pier hotel
idk what that fox was thinking man, pretty sure I''d be more scared of an actual grizzly vs a mountain shaped like one
As a Californian who grew up going to DCA, I loved the california aesthetic. California is nothing like DCA, so going there always felt like I was getting the CA experience I was supposed to get growing up.
Also, I like Buena vista street... but I miss hearing that beach boys music whenever I came in.
Also grizzly peak will always ge my favorite disney park area, especially the brother bear section.
The surfer, sports timeline seems like something other theme parks would do, but NOT disney
I had Grad Night here 3 years ago. I heard some dude from our school got kicked out from running around with weed and trying to climb the bear statue. Yeah... and this was after we were banned for 10 years lol
Finally a video covering this!
This way by far the best themed area of the park when it opened. You really feel like you are in the woods in this part of the park. Not the best ride though, I've probably ridden it less than 5 times total.
Back in 2000 when I worked at Disneyland, I was on the Lion King tram heading from where the bus stop on Katella is to the main entrance of Disneyland. IDCA was in the final stages of construction and a kid on the tram behind me says to his mom while pointing to GRR, "Look mom! Dog rocks!" DCA was a half day park back when it opened.
It is NOT his imagination! It was originally a howling wolf, and shortly before opening day, they rushed and re-sculpted it (bulked it up, basically) to be a "BEAR" because wolves in Ca. had been gone since the 1920s and a BEAR was on the California state flag.
I think both timelines could be intertwined. Start with timeline 2 up till the 1950s. Then jump a head to time line 1 where Bumper McFaren (spelling?) started his rafting company in 1987 where we can expand on Bumper's background. Bruce "Bumper" McFaren was born in Long Beach, California in 1960 and attended UCLA where he graduated with a masters in Business in 1982. However he felt he wasn't quite ready for life behind a desk in a sky scraping office building and instead became professional surfer where he made millions of dollars. He retired from surfing in 1986 after a near death experience during an international surfing competition in Baja California, Mexico and began looking for something else to do. He first ran a surfing store in the San Diego area that lasted for only a year before going out of business. While on a camping trip to Grizzly Peak with some friends in 1987, Bumper fell in love with the area and seeing that there was money to be made in the fledgling white water rafting tour market. Bumper soon staked his claim in the business and bought the old mining buildings as his base of operations. The business was a huge success, In 2012 Bumper sold his business and moved with his wife, a former beach volleyball player and youngest kids ( 2 were already in college) to Thunder Mesa where he bought the abandoned Big Thunder Mountain gold mine and rehabbed it and reopened as a tourist attraction and show case for a wild west theme park called " Wild West Adventure at Big Thunder Mountain" or simply "Wild West Adventure" for short.
I wanna kick it with Dallin's Californian dude bro character
As a kid I always found it boring and hard to spend a whole day at DCA. There just wasnt enough to do there and the California theme was quite boring. The 2 things that I enjoyed at DCA as a kid were Grizzly River Run and the animation building (idk what it's called). I liked to draw the characters and go through the area with the spinning animation wheels and the character quiz.
That damn California adventure ad clip gives me all the 2000’s feels
I often listen to the Grizzly River Run safety schpeel just to feel something... but in all seriousness, I think a National Park Themed land is a great non-IP based land for a Disney park. It is so under rated.
I've never been to DCA, but the Grizzly Peak area seems so cool. I really hope it's not lost anytime soon. It seems as if DCA's golden era was in the mid 2010s.
@3:44 Sure was excellent that they were able to get Theodore S. Prescott, Esquire to do the safety spiel.
Still one of my favorite channels ever :)
That was a pretty great surfer voice, Dallin! I liked it!
Anyone else think Humphrey the bear should be a meet and greet character at Grizzly Peak?
Bumper McFarron sounds like the surfer dude from the 'Get Pitted' vine
I kind of miss the old theming of California adventure - definitely needed some better rides, but it felt cohesive. Now it just is a weird amalgamation of different stuff.
Plus they stole away the tower of terror. I know the other one is still in Florida. Some of us out west though can't afford a trip to Disney world.
Ive been going to Disneyland all my life but still can never afford to go to Disney World. Ive given up that dream
Man I remember that place in Disney's California Adventure like the back of my tire!
Disney's California Adventure opened in February of 2001. Also, it was inspired by some streets around Placerville
Whenever California Adventure comes up, I always think of Kevin Perjurer’s description from an old Defunctland video: “A California-themed park in the already California-themed California.”
I just ordered the The Pirate's Life and Little Christmas Shop candles from Magic Candle Company...thanks for the discount!
I wonder if Grizzly Peak in DCA is related to Grizzly Gulch in Hong Kong, as they are both bear-shaped mountains and with mining operations with a history in the great alpine west
Timeline 2 is objectively better, but timeline 1 will always hold a special place in my heart lol. Also I totally still see Grizzly Peak as the park icon.
Bumper McFerrin, the lesser-known brother of Bobby McFerrin. Not as good with the mouth sounds, but he's able to not-worry while rafting down a mountain.
Yay I’ve been wondering when your next video would be. I was spoiled last month when I first discovered your channel cause I binged every single video lol. I was instantly hooked, so it only took a couple weeks. I was left wanting more. Your channel is definitely one of my top favorite Disney channels! Ps. Aww with spooky season coming up I’m sure going to miss your Haunted Mansion videos at the park. 😔 Do you have any other Halloween themed videos planned?
I remember the parking lot! It was the mid-90s... ahh 90s nostalgia.
