    Printed RA-4 with my Fujimoto CP-31 for years. We were the only studio (that we knew of) printing their own work for clients. We printed thousands. We used a Colorstar 3000 and balanced "in between the lines" for perfect color always. If you're going to do any serious printing invest in a color analyzer. the CP-31 and Colorstar were two of the best investments we made when we opened our studio. We sold the CP-31 a couple of years ago but hung on to our 3000 and Beseler 67 Dichroic. For larger prints up to 16x20 we used a drum. For novices it might seem fun and retro but for pro work it's a PITA! All in all it's a fun process. One word of advice: Make sure you are working in a well ventilated room. Breathing those chemicals is highly questionable. We always had a very strong exhaust and good circulation.

    there's more than one way to control contrast/saturation: you can raise it by adding Hydrogen Peroxyde to your dev, or you can add Sodium Sulfite to decrease it (in minimal amounts -specially the sodium sulfite-. depending how much you add you get more intensity or decrease respectively)

    Ah - this reminds me why I've decided to stick to b&w analogue! Even back in the pre-digital days colour work never appealed to me. Mind you I used to try and do cibachrome not RA4. But I think I'd feel lost in getting the "right" colour balance for colour negative. I find it bad enough scanning colour negatives! Maybe I'm just a monochrome guy.

    Thanks for the overview Nico, there is not a lot of RA-4 content out there so this is very helpful. I think the image is very striking, have you ever enlarged it? Would be interesting to see if the the impact is preserved in 11 x 14 or 16 x 20.

      Nicos Photography Show, in the meantime the book has arrived, I got the latest fourth edition 2016. So far so good, the book explains the chemistry behind darkroom’s processes. And it really has motivated me to now start to make my own chemistry. Now living in Spain (madrid) no idea where to buy sodium thiosulfate or potassium ferricyanide... and I really need to improve the ventilation in my darkroom!! Thanks for the tip for the book and if you have any idea where I’m would be a source for the chems, I would be very grateful! Thanks

    I have never done a color print, however I`m interested to start. Most difficult for me seems the paper development. It would be great to see, how it works with a Jobo tank in real life (w/o the chemistry-only demontration). What do you think about the alternative development using trays?

    • @NicosPhotographyShow
      @NicosPhotographyShow  4 роки тому +1

      I will do one while printing soon, to demonstrate how I do it. I have heard trays can work, but haven't tested it, might give it a go to show how to not do it ;)

    • @alejandropastor96

      trays work, and if you're anxious about working in the dark, theres some very dim yellow lights with a specific wavelength that allow you to see a bit

    For four years I work at home process ra-4. The bad news is that the papers are no longer analog, but the laser exposure. Based with one main color. Either blue, green, red, yellow. I can't find a balance of all colors.

    • @NicosPhotographyShow
      @NicosPhotographyShow  4 роки тому +1

      Havent heard that they have changed the base of the paper, so far not many issues printing. What paper are you using?

    • @b6983832
      @b6983832 2 роки тому

      @@NicosPhotographyShow What all this talk about digital papers is, means actually nothing else than the modern papers being slightly more sensitive to green light when compared to older "analog" papers. Fuji sales department has made claims that DP II is "exclusively for digital printing", but this is more like a marketing slogan than a fact about paper not being suitable for darkroom printing. When referring to analog, Fuji means older type of minilabs with an optical printer, not darkroom printing. Photofinishers and minilabs are the main market for these papers, and the marketing slogans are made for them - not the occasional hobbyist darkroom printers. What you see, is you probably need to add 10 of magenta filtration, that's all. I'm using DP II in darkroom with no problems whatsoever.
