Thailand Broke Up My Relationship

  • Today I talk about how the lure of Thailand ended up being a big factor in breaking up my relationship back home. I had a nice girlfriend and a ready-made family, but Thailand was in the middle of it all. Life's choices can be tough sometimes, love and partnerships can break and new chapters begin.

Good for you, doing what makes you happiest.
My late hubby and I always wanted to travel abroad. We wanted to teach overseas, we were both teachers. Our luck never let that happen, but it was in the back of our minds the entire time. When he passed after 30 years of marriage, and after a year of grieving, I realized I could still travel overseas on my own. My entire life changed once I decide d to move to Thailand. The minute I stepped off the plane in Chiang Mai, I found a new love: Thailand!

That was awesome, Wayne! I mean that you shared. I'm now 55, and I've been a wanderer for much of my life as well. I also tried to "settle down" in the US, but it just didn't work for me. I mean, I could have stayed there and just drifted along probably, but life is short. So I started my wandering again. Now, I am hoping that my new home will be Thailand. I really didn't want to come back after my recent trip!
I would hope that it is never too late to find someone who's right, wherever you may be. I believe that everything happens for a reason. It's not nice to hurt anyone, but I think if it had been me, I would have become resentful in your situation. Better that you are happy, wherever you are. I'm working at it!
Keep up the videos. I've really enjoyed them, and they've been rather helpful with getting the Chiang Mai 'vibe'.

Wayne: I deeply admire your openness and self-awareness. I always stress with my daughter that life goals should follow these priorities in this order:
    1. Your health
    2. Your happiness
    3. Do some good in the world
    4. Don’t do bad things others
Whatever hits the best balance of these priorities is where we all need to be. Your self-awareness is a good foundation. Always enjoy and value your videos. Thanks.
Planning on moving my family to CM in January so, your videos are soooo helpful. Cheers.

New subscriber Wayne after watching this video. Admire your honesty and can relate to every word. I knew the very first moment I touched down in Thailand 30ish years ago that it was where I wanted to end up but got involved in different relationships and , like yourself, couldn’t settle long term as the lure kept making me want to return but I wasn’t brave enough to take the plunge
    .
I’m 58 now and finally moving over in July. You, have years on me and many more to truly enjoy in this wonderful country. Don’t plan and think ahead too much, what will be will be. You’ve already made the hardest decision. Look forward to your continuing story.

I was wondering if you were going to sing that Elvis sing, and you did, lol. I had the same feelings for Thailand for many years and did some long stints, it really does become almost an obsession for many of us & we just have to get back no matter what.
I’m aiming for a 2 month stay in July, can’t wait !! Even after a couple dozen trips over 25 years I’m still always excited when I arrive in Bkk airport and hear the lady voice saying ‘end of the walkway’ when I hit that moving walkway on my way to customs. It’s the little things, I then know I’ve arrived & can totally expect the unexpected which is the magic of Thailand 🇹🇭

Mate, you did the right thing. And kudos for giving the relationship a good crack and not listening to the people who questioned your decision and instead followed your instincts. The pressure to conform and follow the status quo is HUGE. Some thoughts -
    1. When you are torn between two life choices, best to try one and see how it makes you feel. You did the right thing giving the relationship a go. At least now you won't be second guessing yourself.
    2. Don't be hard on yourself for 'throwing away' a great women. Sure you loved her, but if that love wasn't big enough to keep you there then she wasn't the right woman for you. End of story.
    3. We have choices in life and choosing one path means we lose having the experience of all the paths we didn't choose. We can't do them all, so having made a choice, jump in 100% and don't look back wondering if it's the right one. It's the one you made. Believe in yourself enough to trust that you know what you really want.
    4. Taking the more challenging path instead of the easy safe road ALWAYS leads to growth and better outcomes. Harder now, but at some point in the future you'll look back and go 'thank fuck I decided to go back to Thailand!'
    Enjoy Thailand!

Stunning video. Lots of honest open gold nuggets of wisdom and perspective in there I hope will find the right person watching now. It's all about love - love means different things to different people. We love Thailand as if it were another partner... the partner that always understands us and makes us most happy... if we desire and pursue another PERSON, society is more understanding, and even see it as an act of passion worthy of Shakespearian admiration. However, when we desire a country (lifestyle), people are too quick to judge it as hollow and selfish. Thus, whether it's a person, oneself, a hobby, or a country, after a 'shaky' past 2 years and ever shakier future, we must all now pursue our true love.
You had a horrible decision to make, but you did the right thing, mate.

Hi Wayne. Love your channel, love your honesty and all that. I'm down here in Devon watching you get sunburned. I'm not sure Thailand is for me. For a holiday for sure, but living there perhaps not. One thing I think you would be advised to think about going forward is when you come back to England, which you will probably do at some date. Your pension. Your national insurance contributions. You're gonna be well behind on that. Time shoots by and at some point, you're gonna need to sort yourself out as you get older. Take it from me, I'm 60 things start to wear out. Think about your pension, your retirement. You don't want to be working your socks off into your dotage.

I hope long term you're okay. I couldn't last more than 6 weeks in Thailand. Tried it three times. Went nuts every time, and worse every time. Not having something specific to do, not being really part of a wider community, the feeling that I was warehoused, and this was an open prison...I couldn't take it, and I fear that the position I ended in quickly is just the position more would end in, given more time. Aristotle said Man is a zoon politikon - a sociopolitical animal. It's a very strange thing being a man of leisure in an inexpensive country. I'm not sure many of us are cut out for it.

So sorry to hear that you had nothing to do. Where did you land, may I ask?
I was in Chiang Mai, and jumped into live theater, having never set foot on a stage since childhood. Auditioned for a part in English-speaking theater and got it, first try. Then so damned busy with rehearsals for months, but made a ton of friends. Also learned how to do acrylic painting, got into photography, walking around Chiang Mai every morning, snapping photos and shooting video for a few hours after breakfast. There are so many expat groups also in CM.
I learned that when you are 'retired' you have to act like you are playing hooky from school, like a child on holiday, away from the watchful eye of your parents! Get up early and dare yourself to try new things!

I think the key is to have things to do, and not be a "man of leisure" in the sense of being totally idle. Creative endeavors are a good thing in this context. I plan to go for a long-term stint later this year, and one of my main activities is going to be writing and producing music. Screenwriting will be another. Cooking will be yet another...

I think with the world so much smaller due to the internet that will be less and less of a problem for most. I could spend a year just trying to learn to speak Thai. Traveling all over the country. Meeting Thais and expats, working on setting up an online business. And living in an inexpensive but fairly modern country with very good infrastructure would enable all that.

It’s really interesting to hear you open up like this. My last relationship was over 2 years ago but it was only for a few months, as we started dating I realised my mind was always on Thailand, I was learning Thai, watching GMMTV and listening to Thai music, part of me was always in Chiang Mai. I split up with him for a few reasons but one was the realisation my heart is in Thailand and I can’t be with someone who doesn’t share this. I would never tell my friends this as they would think I am nuts. I am open to dating someone but I’d be very surprised if I can meet someone in the UK that feels right. But that aside…to be honest I also like my freedom and honestly after the honeymoon period is out the way, so far I have preferred being single. Honestly 🤷‍♀️

I know what ya mean mate.. had that with HK for yrs.. then it changed so much I fell out of love with the place.. found Vietnam and now I feel about VN the same... tbh I will probably feel the same about Thailand when I eventually get there.. once a place gets in your soul its in and it will likely never leave... and why I have left Thailand for last... VN just isnt a viable place to live anymore... but Thailand is very much becoming more welcoming and looking a better option! Can't wait to get there later this yr and see if it really delivers... so far it ticks more boxes of what I am looking for in a place to live!! CAN NEVER GO WRONG WHEN YA FOLLOW YOUR HEART!!

Sometimes the right thing is not always the easy thing. Too often we don't make life changes out of fear of the 'what if' and we stay stuck with a life that deep down we know it's not the one we want. Great changes don't happen inside our comfort zones.
