Squirrel vs Red Tail Hawk

- This happened outside my office window. We suspect the squirrel was trying to protect her babies which are somewhere near by - perhaps even inside the wood beam where the hawk is looking closely several times during the video.
Video captured by the Sony HDR-PJ710V video camera in full auto mode at 1920x1080x60p with final output rendered at 1280x720x30p - shot through dirty office window glass. I applied auto-contrast Adobe Premiere CS6 to fix the contrast problem caused by shooting through the office window, and a slight gamma increase to compensate for the darkening from the auto-contrast.
Finally someone who knows how to hold the camera.
Well done and thanks!👍👍
It appears that around the 4:30 mark you can see what the hawk is staring at. It looks like the squirrel has a nest in the big block beam that has space between it and the crossbeam where the hawk is perched. And sure enough at around 6:10 when the camera closes in you can see the nesting material inside the wood beam.
I LOVE Hawks and love squirrels, so this is a conundrum. Love it! Thank you
Classic case of keep your friends close and your enemies closer. ;-)
no doubt there is a nest. The squirrel knows that as long as it keeps the hawk in sight there is little chance of getting caught. Hawks generally catch their prey by surprise in this case the squirrel is much faster while the hawk is in a sitting position.
Gutsy little squirrel. Very well done video there jerry! The talons on that hawk, wow!
Here we are a year later and they're STILL going at each other!
The cameraman deserves an award.
The agility of squirrels is amazing.
They're extremely fast and agile but their weakness is their thinking is erratic and sometimes unwise. If you panic a squirrel it will make mistakes. They are also slightly over-confident. Seen a fox catching an overconfident squirrel by surprise straight in its jaw even though the squirrel knew of the animal proximity but underestimated its deceptive intention. Long ago annoyed by squirrels raiding a birdfeeder, i covered it with vine that had spines all over it. When relaxed the vine was no obstacle for the squirrel. It would manoeuver in it, even using it to hang. But suddently scare the squirrel and it panics and gets caught in the vine spines and freezes. It eventually made its escape but not doubt had a taste of the spines. It did not seem to hurt him, the fur must protect it.
WOW, the way momma squirrel lunged at the hawk was amazing.
This goes to show how important ambush and speed is in a raptor attack. If not the prey can make you look slow and silly.
Raptors never look silly
it doesn't look slow and silly. the hawk wasn't attacking. but letting the hawk hang around is dangerous. the squirrel spent 9 minutes trying to harass the hawk but it couldn't do anything more than distract it. maybe the squirrel distracted it enough to prevent it from figuring out a way to get its babies but we didn't see the hawk fly away. who knows how long this went on.
Best 9 minutes of my life , such a handsome bird up against that little mo fo . Brilliant 👍👍
Excellent job with your sturdy recording of the video 👍👍🦅
i like how the cameraman backed up once the hawk started staring it his direction lol
I saw a red tail hawk in the winter snow perched on a tree overlooking squirrels down below. I was close from the tree maybe less than 20 feet. The hawk turned it head upside with its beak pointing vertically to the sky, when i got closer to take a look. I am not sure what that posture meant but it looked ominous and i did not get any closer. It was big but not as formidable as the one in this video which looks scary.
The philosopher squirrel has concluded none of us really die.
Good video. The brave squirrel is definitely defending this area
At first I thought the squirrel was foolishly playing a Russian roulette, but I think it has its young ones close by, and thus keeps a watchful eye on the enemy, while trying to taunt it to leave.
Me too, I think the squirrel was trying to distract the hawk to protect the nest. Blessings!
Same reason smaller birds mob bigger ones. It's to protect young. Only this squirrel was doing it single-handedly.
Brave and smart squirrel.💙
well done elusive little guy.
Squirrels make lists of top ten for ingtelligence up with dolphins chimps and humans. They are amazing and very cute as well.
too bad, that record is stained by them raiding songbird's nests and eating hatchlings alive or eggs. I didn't believe it until i saw it eating cardinal chicks you 'll find video of it on youtube. That changed my opinion on squirrels. When they get hungry in the late spring they will raids all birds nests. One more thing, stupid people feeding squirrels are responsible. They promote squirrel overpopulation. Birds are more important to preserve. Grey squirrels are rodents like rats.
@@goognamgoognw6637 the majority of people are not vegetarians. Visit a slaughterhouse, where day old live chicks are legally thrown into a mincer and adults are plucked alive. Get some perspective..
@@goognamgoognw6637 try not to 'sermonize' yourself, you sound incredibly ignorant. And I'm not American, but the fact you think your country doesn't have arrogant people again shows you're an idiot. Maybe most UA-camrs upset YOU because YOU are wrong...
I tend to think they are a notch smarter than humans sometimes... but that's just me saying...
really, i grew up on a farm, & always thought them dimwitted ? i am certain they dont make anything near dolphin or crow or raven intelligence lists though, they are so behind crows or ravens in fact, its why they are run over by the millions yearly, living 20 feet from the road & they still dont grasp when its safe to cross the road, ive always been amazed at most cats lack of the same concept, knowing they do posses much more brainpower than a squirrel or rabbit, lol o well natures way of providing some free roadkill for the spectators
We have a Hawk in our side field and he comes and sits in our back yard. Love Nature also Turkey's,+ Deer.
Hawk just sittin' there the whole time "I DIN DO NUFFIN!"
A squirrel can bite trough a black walnut. It can also do the same thing to a bird's leg.
What is missing is the sound of the birds also making a racket. When that hawk takes off it will be like a bomber surrounded by attacking fighters. Also with a lot of more intense racket.
If there were blue jays that where near it would not have stayed around that long.
Wow that hawk has one serious manicure
Great footage. Squirrel got nuts .
damn nice Crystal clear video
I guess the hawk wasn't hungry that day. Great photography. .
That is a Mama for you!!
Obvious that it was a Mom and has babies...to protect
BADASS Squirrel!
Nine and a half minutes of action free video
Squirrel probably had a nest nearby. I've seen squirrels shred each other over territory.
The hawk would need the element of surprise to catch such a nimble creature.
the hawk wasn't trying. it was perching. was it interested in the squirrel's young? who knows. but the squirrel wasjust performing instinctual behavior. ideally the squirrel would like to harass the predator away, but the hawk is toobig and dangerous for that so at least it does distract it, probably.
This video is like acid reflux in video
I always enjoyed watching squirrels taunting our cat. Squirrel stays just above reach of the cat on the tree trunk and drives him crazy.
great vid this young squirrel is brave
Squirrel like.. ". You ain't gone do shit"...
That was not the ending I expected...hawk must have a full belly.
Natural born enemies but that day they chose life .....It shall be life. Ten Bears
You can see the hawk get pissed lol so funny.
Какая отважная и игривая белка 🐿️🤨😁
haha.... squirrel playing 'hide & seek' and Hawk is just hungry
Squirrel 🐿 must have babies nearby. Trying to run hawk off.
squirrel : **exist**
red tailed hawk : *YOU DARE OPPOSE ME MORTAL*
I wonder why the squirrel would intentionally provoke the hawk? Maybe it had a nest nearby, or it just had some down time and thought it would he fun!? Either way, the squirrel has some guts!
I am the squirrel and life is the hawk.
See the feathers on that hawk, he's getting right pissed off!
crazy mama squirel!!!
That squirrel was playing a game of "bait". It wanted to protect it's nest, it even came right up to the hawk and ran by on the beam close enough to be within striking distance of it's talons. It was baiting the hawk to divert attention from the nest. The squirrel got close enough several times that it could have been caught if it had made a mistake, I think the squirrel was rightly defending it's nest and babies. The hawk could very likely see the nest site, and wanted a closer look, but the squirrel wasn't having any of it!
Looks like the squirrel is intentionally distracting the hawk. Either playing games or a nest nearby?
00:40 Squirrel be like: "Bitch you ain't gonna do shit!"
00:45 Squirrel pisses on the beam, as if to say "piss off".
A dad will do what he has to to protect his family
This been up 9 years now and there still going at it
These two have a history...
I was thinking the same thing! This definitely wasn’t this squirrels first time doing this!
The hawk was staring/listening to the squirrels babies in the nest!
Squirrel's only job is harass hawk away from baby squirrel nest. Every year.
Squirrel playing chicken with a hawk... 🤣
Squirrel playing with loaded gun!
Fast brave squirrel
Squirrels are tough.

Hit and Run tactics! I'm not scared of you hawk, and I'm not about to be dinner either!!!!
awesome! ty for uploading.
I was afraid she was going to be lunch😮
That squirrel gots some nuts on him.
Nice video from Bangladesh
Best nature video ever! (🤞)
you need to watch the one on youtube showing one of the two species of these water birds , I think they are located in the uk ,they place their nests on the sides of rushing rapids and waterfalls, and can easily catch fish & then deliver it to their babies, crazy, diving under water like a loon , coming up with 2-5 inch fish ,size of small smelts in their beaks
The squirrel knows it has the advantage when the hawk is not flying. Smart? I don’t know.
Flirting with Death.
This squirrel goes by the name Evel Knievel
What a beautiful bird
The the US against Russia! "Hey, I'm watching you. " - "Ya think so??"
Amazing video
Great camerawork. For live alert prey, the raptor has to have a clear attack path and exit path. The timberwork here provides neither! The squirrel knows this. He can thwart and frustrate the raptor all day long.
: A combination of open area and or by surprise for the hawk to maximize success with capturing food. In this case the hawk had neither open area nor surprise.
Fastest little squirrel ever
The squirrel is looking for trouble.
just awesome moment
The Red Tail isn't hunting or that squirrel would be food already. The bird is just resting and wants to be left alone, hence the threat display of fluffing and wing beating. Anyone thinking the hawk needs to ambush to attack doesn't understand hawks. This squirrel found out the hard way that if a raptor wants you it will have you: ua-cam.com/video/K1ZdN2kB4iU/v-deo.html
What a titanic battle. A red tailed clickbait hawk
The squirrel was the day's entertainment for the hawk.
I love these birds bec they rid the area of the loud as.s birds.
Good video.
Red Tail Hawks Love to eat Tree Rats (Squirrels).
wonder what was going on there. those squirrels had balls
Walnuts :-)
At some point in future. The squirrel will be dinner.
Not today Buteo, not today!
Falcão está querendo os lindos, gordinhos e apetitosos filhotes.
A mamãe se arrisca tentando espanta-lo.
That's one ballsy squirrel. I was rooting for the hawk.
The squirrel has guts, or nuts?🤔😹
Your mocking me aren’t you 🦃
Strange structure. What is it's purpose, to set up wild life scenarios to amuse the humans? Good job with the camera work.
That's a pergola.
To bad the author didn’t have the patience to record this to the end.
I cant stand squirrels and was hoping this one would be lunch for Mr Hawk
