I'm a Marine vet and I work at a VA Hospital. We can only help those will take the help. A lot of it the trauma they went through, they can't be in a home because they are to paranoid. The VA can get you get medical help, mental help, find you a home, get you a job and if nothing else sign up for your benefits. If you were wounded during service you can get free money. File a claim with Comp and Pension. I work with several vets who have a 100% compensation so they get free money outside how much they make at work. PTSD is the easiest wound to prove. Please come in.
My dad served in the US Army over in Vietnam in 1969. He broke his left femur in a helicopter crash and that was the end of his military service. He spent the next 30+ years drowning himself in a bottle. He didn't talk with the VA until the early 2010s. The VA helped him live a better life up until he passed away 3 weeks ago. I wish he had talked to them sooner. He might have made a good father. _ C'est la vie._
As someone with experience as a first responder, this comment hits home. There's so many people I've wanted to help over the years who have actively declined it, sometimes to the point of me begging to let me help them. And seeing how many are traumatized in one way or another, I hope more will get the help they need and deserve. Thank you for trying to help them. And thank you for serving.
Im a Vet who works for the VA as well. I'm a therapist in a PTSD clinic. You are right that they have to want our help AND Doug is right as well. We are overwhelmed with those wanting our help and have been told we are fully staffed despite the overwhelming numbers coming to us wanting help and having to be scheduled much too far out. We have resources but need help providing those resources. It breaks my heart that we can't do more.
Great video, Doug! Thank you for sharing and bringing light to this issue. Metallica's Confusion is also a good song/video about some of the mental issues veterans deal with. Not a profound and educational as FFDP's but a good one. Thank you, veterans for all you do and endure for this nation.
One of my favorite stories to share--my grandfather (also a veteran) who survived WW2 was also one of the lobbyists that helped convince the government to create the GI Bill (expansion of the VA system)
Hi Doug. I'm a recent subscriber to your channel, and when I saw you posted a reaction to this song, I felt I have to watch this. I've thoroughly enjoyed going through your back content, and am just at the 1 second mark now, paused and about to enjoy this video. I'm trying to say I think I've got a feeling for your appreciation of music. As to the personal impact of this song on me, it's second-hand but still hits close to home. I was in the air cadets in my youth, and had many friends from other cadet regiments, army sea etc. At one point in my young adulthood, I had begun the process of enlisting with the 1226 Fort Garry Horse - Armoured Reconnaissance reserve unit. I got halfway through the process, towards a role of armoured vehicle driver, before my life changed directions and I just dropped out of the process. When Canada joined the Afghanistan deployment, although a reserve unit, the 1226 was immediately activated and deployed for it's role specialty. And such, the unit earned the dubious 'distinction' of being the first Canadian military unit to suffer a loss in combat since the Korean War. Many of my friends from cadets did complete the enlistment process, and although nobody I knew personally didn't come home, I feel the shared pain of the whole unit. My cadet squadron is/was based in the same building as the 1226, so in my teen years I got to know many of the officers and enlisted of the unit simply by being in a shared space. Sorry for the long winded reply, I'm about to enjoy your reaction video now. I'm not sure if there's a process to make suggestions or not, but my humble first (and only, if not the way?) suggestion for a reaction is, given my knowledge of the kinds of music you are a fan of, I'm assuming you're either a fan of or at least quite familiar with David Bowie's 'A Space Oddity'? May I humbly suggest on behalf of the people of Canada, that in honour of our military perhaps, to watch a cover of that song performed by Commander Chris Hadfield, astronaut, recorded live aboard the International Space Station. This cover shouldn't be hard to find, I'd imagine :) Peace!
Rambo, the movie, 45 years ago, explain the situation... Humanity, Who & What & Why are We, as the same Race, whatever the skin colors, the religion. Search for the Truth & Healing will be your God gift. Love to Ya'll
This is a great song that shouldn't have been done or made . It makes me sick it had to be done The last group of people that are living on the streets struggling with addiction & other problems shouldn't be our veterans they're the ones who should be on the top of the list to get and receive what they have earned and sacrificed for . I'm a son of a Vietnam vet who tough for this county the branch The United States Marine Corp . I'm proud of my Dad for what he's done for it .
We need a reaction to Mastodon and Primus now!! Seabeast - Mastodon is a GREAT song. Wynona's Big Brown Beaver or Jerry Was a Race Car Driver - Primus would be the way to go for them! Great videos and reactions Doug!
I always wonder how you would rate of one of my favourite bands: Amorphis. They're a really awesome band from Finland! The song 'The Bee' is one of my favourites and the lyrics are based on a Finnish mythological tale. Their vocalist 'Tomi Joutsen' is an absolute beast switching from grunting to clean singing.
I actually watched this video for the first time about a month ago. It's truly heartbreaking. War shouldn't even be a thing, let alone letting these veterans deal with all the consequences with so little support. So sad. 😢 Totally unrelated, I'd love to get your reaction on Epica's new song "The Ghost in Me - Danse Macabre", the live version. I think you'd like it a lot. Thank you for being so genuine. 🤘
Thank you for YOUR service, Dr. Doug, giving us your insight and honoring those of us who signed that open-ended check... However, I've never understood why it's "Happy" Veteran's Day, as there are just a scant few veterans who can honestly claim that they are happy; it's only a celebration for those who profited from leveraging the collateral (damage) of those checks into their own gains..... Yet to humbly quote Eric Arthur Blair (better known as George Orwell!), "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." I personally and preferably resonate with Musashi's statement "A true Samurai trains with both the knowledge and the hope that one day his skills will not be required; however, it is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war." Thank you for your grasp of the gravity of the whole situation by the end of the video, and keep doing what you do-- Blessed Be, & Peace! 🙏☮
I've never really understood why the "happy" either, except that it's our culturally reflexive thing to say before "holiday name here", but I've always chosen to interpret it as a wish for the veteran on the other end of it to be happy, at least for one day, because you all deserve it. Even just one day of peace, so much more, but please, if nothing else, just one day.
Hey Doug, I found your channel by account because I was listening to the sound track to cowboy bebop. I loved your video and the in-depth research you did for the video. It was very refreshing to listen to it, now I came search for your most recent video and it’s one of my favorite bands. I had a battle buddy who committed suicide a few years back after he left my duty station. He loved this song just like I did and it was played at his funeral. Thank you for this video on Veterans Day. SSG Youngblood, love you bro. You may be gone but never forgotten.
I'm a bit of a pacifist too, and I oppose US involvement in pretty much every war it's been in (except WWI and WWII) Yet I can still recognise hurt people who need help, mentally, physically, economically Don't let the machine grind you down
Ngl, I think this is the first time I’ve seen the actual music video for this song. Like, I came across it over Spotify on some playlist or another and instantly decided “holy shit this belongs on my Genesis Rhapsodos playlist” and then slapped the repeat button so I could enjoy it more before moving on. Learning the origin is kind of a trip tbh. But then, wouldn’t be the first time I got a wildly different origin to a song I associated with my favorite blorbo. Also happened with Bang Bang by Green Day lol. (Tho… in fairness, both songs still kinda apply to the character in question if I stretch a fair bit lmfao.)
My dad served in WWII and lost an uncle in Korea, I feel for the vets and it was a disgrace that when Vietnam vets came back they didn't get a welcome. This country never really took care of our service men and women. Unfortunately now what little help they get will soon go away

Yeah, it´s heartbreaking to watch but such an important message. Dream Theater also has a song on this same topic, the song is called "The Enemy Inside." It´s equally as heartbreaking. If you do the reaction on that one, which I highly recommend, you need to watch the Official Video, not the lyric video. It´s a banger of a metal song and also very intense, both musically, lyrically and visually. Mike Mangini is drumming his butt off on that one.
Our Veterans can't forget our wars, & so we can't forget our war's Veterans. & so I thank you for your service, Brian, especially today! (& as I'm 4 Vet's uncle) 👍
Thank you. And you are right we can't forget. I was in during peace time but I feel for my brothers and sisters that have given there all for all of us and then get forgotten when they come home!
Ive heard stories about the US militery (and other departments of US government) that with their funding system where "if you dont spend the money youre given, next year you will get less" in place, different groups will spend money on useless things like replacing every flat-screen TV in the corridors of bases, or even just filling a storage unit with some sort of expensive thing in order to keep the on-paper spending high to guarentee a big budget the following year... Along with the useless exclusivity manufacturing contracts set up by politicians being paid to set them up making everyone spend ***WAY*** more than replacement or new parts hsould cost, it makes you wonder what the country would be like if that excess spending went to caring for veterens, or being paid to support the homeless communities with dedicated shelters run by the militery in these areas...
FFDP is a group of true patriots. They do great work for veterans. And yes it is sad that our government uses us, but refuses to dedicate proper funding, while it can fund other non critical boondoggles.
I don't know all the current numbers, however, I do know the current suicide rate among veterans is up to 22 a day, that's double the number in the video, since that now approaches 1 veteran every hour (video listed it as 1 veteran every 2 hours), so about 10,000 a year (8,000 by actual math). In any case, that's an unacceptable number and the government needs to allocate a lot more resources to counter this and help those who wrote a blank check to this country. Thank you to all the veterans who currently served and who have served.
All american people should be more demanding of their government and how they treat veterans, after sacrificing for their country they cannot be abandoned by their country. Great song by the way
11:49 "The Fact That So Many Of Those Organizations Have To Exist, That Just Upsets Me" Same here, Doug. It's absolutely appalling that this many of those organizations have to exist in order to aid our military veterans because of the US government consistently coming up short on aiding them. It just doesn't make any sense
please, I beg you, I could give you all my money, just to see you listening to the masterpiece of Brazilian progressive rock, which (in my opinion) is the album “tudo foi feito pelo sol”, by the Mutantes. The Mutantes are Brazil's leading progressive rock band. In fact, for us, they're better than the Beatles. Thank you!
I don't understand how the armed services branches work, but they seem to invest a great deal of effort into training personnel for war, seems to me there should be a equal to or greater than effort retraining personnel for post war reintroduction back into society. You'd think this retraining effort would identify problems and the care needed on a person by person basis. My impression is that presently upon return vets get dumped back into society and are on their own - this is wrong and a dereliction of duty by the armed services branches IMO.
With all due respect to veterans, a good way to improve their situation would be for the United States to stop constantly invading and attacking other countries. Do you know who doesn’t have that tremendous problem with their veterans? Non-imperialist nations that don’t impose their interests at gunpoint.
Hi Doug, It is plain to see the all Governments in the US, UK or wherever need to prioritise the help the veterans need rather than build houses and giving handouts to legal or illegal immigrants.
Just watch the video, don't try to impress with your playing along, we all know you can do that... The message in this video is far more important than keys and chords...
It's his style of reaction. He does that to every song, and I personally watch Doug exactly for that reason: he knows what he's talking about, and he's very interested in the context and content of every song. Just move along if it's not your thing ! :)
@@GhostyBlak I know, I am subscribed to his channel for a reason (since his first Nightwish reaction nearly 4 years ago). But as a music video is a work of art comprised of music and visuals, I think it is a matter of respect towards the artist to also watch the video. Him turning away from the video in the first seconds of the song really annoyed me.
I am so thankful for your support, @progoholic, thank you for being a longtime supporter. I mean no disrespect. As a musician who dearly loves making music with others, playing the keyboard helps me connect with the song. And as a music theory teacher, I do musical analysis in all of my videos, while also, as a choral music composer, paying particular attention to lyrics and the messages in the songs I’m listening to, and the video that goes along with the song. I do all of this to gain a deeper understanding and deeper insight of and connection to the song and its message(s).

where is this VA you speak of?? I've got plenty of family members that died with ZERO help from the VA , they just use you and make false promises
You make it seem easy getting help through the VA, it’s not.
USN 84-88. I can't watch this video without tearing up. But I force myself every Veterans Day. This year it's on your channel.
Right there with you. Certain songs and messages will always turn on my waterworks.
Thank all veterans for their service
Much gratitude for all who have served our great nation.
Great one to do for Veterans Day Doug. Very appropriate. Thank you to all the Veterans that served and are serving.
The video is heartbreaking and I cry every time I watch it.
Fantastic choice, Doug! God Bless all our veterans! #veteransday

THIS BAND IS SO INTENSE IS UNBELIVABLE ...EASLIY ONE OF MY TOP TEN FAVORITE BANDS EVER❤
This song still gives me chills. With or without the video.
To me the guitar solo is the sensation/feeling of chaos brought into reality. It's just.. It just feels so raw.

The video for this FFDP song and their video for "Coming Down" are two videos that are really make you think and really get to you.

Thank you for your service!
Thanks Doug. Would recommend their version of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd song "Blue on black", which features Brian May as a guest. Such a great cover.

The best Anti War song in my mind is I Was Only 19 by Redgum. That one is something for you to look at.
For Memorial Day you should take a look at the cover of Green fields of France by The Men They Couldn't Hang
The song Bad Company on the album Bad Company by the band Bad Company.
You should check out Death, anything off of symbolic or the sound of perseverance

But as a music video is a work of art comprised of music and visuals, I think it is a matter of respect towards the artist to also watch the video. Him turning away from the video in the first seconds of the song really annoyed me.
@@progoholic that's fair, I understand why you're feeling that way.
@@progoholic Exactly this.
