THIS song !!! Not enough praise for this jewel, you can't look back from this one, instrumentation is so rich, and the melody on point ...bref...a masterpiece 🎉🎉💓💓
This song will never get old. It's a masterpiece of epic proportion. Everything here are off the charts such as the lyrics, melody, musicianship and the falsetto.
J’ai tellement aimé ce morceau. Il me rappelle tellement de souvenirs. C’est vraiment le son « années 80 ». C’est une sorte de douce marmelade qui m’accompagne et me replonge dans ces années dorées.
10y old me loved this and 50y old me still do, even though going through synth, goth, metal, hardcore metal, death metal, jazz, pop, emo and just everything really interesting not mainstream, THIS is one good perfect song.
The best intro ever still gives a warm feeling and some goosebumps when it starts… beautiful soothing relaxing…. And the change of singing style the vocal change incredible
One of my favorite songs and "go to" 80s anthem. My favorite lyric: "I know that I must do what's right. Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti." Sublime...
i have always loved the insanely catchy melody of "africa" (ESPECIALLY INTRO-ING THAT CHORUS omg) but the LYRICS like: "as sure as kilimanjaro rises like olympus above the serengeti.." i mean, who writes amazeballs lyrics like that anymore?! the wonderful craft of songwriting, i miss you!
There was definitely some magic going on in 1982. That whole summer was something special. This and Steve Miller Band, Survivor, and of course Toni Basil.
We can forget “Mickey” hope I never hear that inane song again, I prefer Captain Sensible, I Eat Cannibals, Pass the Dutchy, Haircut 100, one hit wonders wise..
Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Toto. Yes, this song is ICONIC, a CLASSIC of this band and also for the 80's decade! It was released on October 30, 1982 (USA) and May 10, 1982 for Europe as the third single from their fourth studio album "Toto IV", which ranked 7th in the charts in France. In 2013, it reappeared in the rankings at the 185th position according to the SNEP. Yet one of the members of the group, the guitarist did not expect this piece to become such a success! Because originally the song was relegated to last place in this opus and was almost not included to be kept as a song for a "solo album". But it was the boss of the record company who told them that this title was beginning to become a HIT on the dance floors and that it was even played in New York niteclubs! For David Paich, the male singer and keyboard player, this title was inspired by a feeling of helplessness and anger at the difficulty of life for children in Africa at a time when many spots for UNICEF were shown on TV showing children and families living in poverty. He was deeply shocked at the sight of these images. I recommend you "Rosanna" for your NEXT REACT which was the first single from this album! Thanks for your great job our American mate. 👌🇫🇷
Toto is such a great group. They change the lead vocal singer and the rhythm but their particular sound remains. You should try "Stranger in Town", "Pamela", "Til' The End" and "I'll Be Over You" among many others
There are few songs like this one who gives me goosebumps everytime i heard them. I recommend you: Night in white satin of The moody blues. It gives me a lot of goosebumps with the melody and instrumentation 👌
No way!!! I was waiting for this reaction since the time you reacted to Rosanna. Finally, thank you so much Dereck and I'm sorry that I can't leave a lot of comments lately due to me being busy. But, I will still support you till the end 😁
something for Dereck i was only 15 Years old went to my Local nightclub long walk up the Stairs in Berlin Dachluke 1982 ....???? But allready from Down below I heard this song beeing Played from this Massive Speakers not even half way up....???? Good old 80s Amazing Music all the times incl. in the Nightclubs......????? I still remember ...???? Incl. TFOS Wishing....????? Yazoo Dont go...???? What an experience as an Teenager...
These guys are musicians, musicians. Many of those artists you mentioned, including Michael Jackson, used these guys to record, write, arrange and or engineer their albums.
I love your energy Dereck! It is so cool how quick to recognize instruments and subtle detail. Also your ability to remember lyrics so quick and sing along is so cool! This song is a classic and so beautiful. Love to you Dereck from Montreal! xoxo
Toto has made some dam good songs, but Africa is my favorite. It's just got that feel, that I can't really describe but it is there. Plus when they wrote this, none of them had actually set foot on Africa as a whole. Kinda a miracle the song turned out as well as it did.
Fun fact: the song almost did not make it on the album. Lukather thought it was to weird and stated he would run naked in L.A. if this ever became a hit Another fun fact : Human Nature (mj hit song) was also brought in by Steve Porcaro from the band and the rest of the band did not find it fitting for the album Toto iv. Quincy Jones heard it by accident and it ended up on Thriller. Toto is responsible for that album as well. Lukather. Paich and both Porcaro's were involved in playing on the album tracks
This was my jam, and I had to put it on my playlist. So many memories listening to this. And Nas sampled it for his song “New World”. Derek please give a listen to “On And On” by Stephen Bishop.
If you're a fan of harmonies, you might want to give a listen to an a capella group called "Home Free." They are simply mindblowing how well they harmonize. But keep in mind, NO instruments. All vocal percussion.
I grew up with this song. I love it however Rosanna grew on me and I think that is a much better song vocally, instrumentally. The instruments alone are just bananas!
My ex wife used to call me "Toto Head"...notice I said EX wife. If you don't like this...you ain't in my camp. Dereck said it. EPITOME of a great song by great musicians
Out the door and through the window, there is no way he wouldn't of heard this and I knew he did before he said he did! As at the beginning he knew how the synth went and did the same motion lol So he didn't just know the chours but whole song. And then when solo came he said there it is and did the actions.
Écoute une de leurs ballades comme two hearts par exemple. Ou encore I will remember. Dans le style de hold the line, il y a Don't chain my Heart. Un bon riff qui met une bonne claque
If you go that way, you may want to react to every songs available in GTA Vice City radios. I approve all of them in advance. They are mostly just missing Gainsbourg, Goldman and Jeanne Mas :)
Loooove this song, thank you for your analysis ❣️ Just for the fun, Dax and Kristen Shepard made a clip (lip sync) of this song as a tribute to Toto. So well done, joyful and respectful. Find it here : ua-cam.com/video/vgL3puDfuRg/v-deo.html
Epic song. A timeless masterpiece.
This song is such a timeless classic, a true 80s gem!!! So happy it won the poll!!!
This song is pure magic. I grew up with it.
THIS song !!! Not enough praise for this jewel, you can't look back from this one, instrumentation is so rich, and the melody on point ...bref...a masterpiece 🎉🎉💓💓

Greetings from South Africa
Very very beautiful song!!! 😍😍
You are awesome Dereck! I love it when you take us back to the 80’s! Your analysis is always spot on.
The strongest mid-line harmony which allows the chorus to play around it And The Lovely Bobby Kimball can Still hit the notes. ❤❤
There are few songs like this one who gives me goosebumps everytime i heard them. I recommend you: Night in white satin of The moody blues. It gives me a lot of goosebumps with the melody and instrumentation 👌
I was literally just saying I didn't know all the lyrics but, that chorus? Stop playing ❤
An 80's gem all the waaaaaay 😄

"Hold the Line" next.
"Pamela" and "Straight For the Heart" is also good.
He has already done hold the line for his first react. He even says so in his introductory message. Read!
Bittersweet Symphony, by The Verve. I believe you’d like that one. ❤
There are a number of covers of this song but for sure you should check out Peter Bence's cover, and his arrangement is inspired to say the least!
Oh my god, i love that song so much 💖💖💖😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩
Great classic icon song love it ♥️
For as great as this song is Hold The Line is just as epic and Out Of Love is a true ballad
If you're a fan of harmonies, you might want to give a listen to an a capella group called "Home Free." They are simply mindblowing how well they harmonize. But keep in mind, NO instruments. All vocal percussion.
Le meilleur groupe de musiciens. David Paich,Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather. Des tueurs.
Masterpiece
I always loved this song and I also only knew the chorus and I had never seen the video. Thank you!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Derek sexy for your reaction ❤️

Toto is amazing! I highly recommend "Georgy Porgy". It's an underappreciated, funky gem!
C’est juste un groupe fantastique ! Je vous conseil les 5 premiers albums ils sont monumentaux !!!
Probably the most underrated band ever. All world class players with matching songs. I could go on but I won’t. 😔
My ex wife used to call me "Toto Head"...notice I said EX wife. If you don't like this...you ain't in my camp. Dereck said it. EPITOME of a great song by great musicians
Derek, Toto " Goin Home"
Gotta check out Pamela, Without Your Love, Georgie Porgy, Can't Stop Loving You, Straight For the Heart

That song inspired Michael Jackson who worked with Steve Porcaro ... His song Human nature has Africa vibes if you listen carefully
Fun fact: you can't see Kilimandjaro from Serengeti. You should look for at Amboseli.

I prefer 90's song but this one from the 80's, i love it so much, it's 100 % pleasure !
Madonna is a legend. So many #1 hits. But I digress. Toto is awesome! And this the perfect example of that.

No offense Dereck, but I think you have yet a lot to catch up to before you begin to give out "best ever" awards :)
I think this is the most annoying song ever. I'm so sick of every movie playing this to. Hate this song so much
You’re incorrect. How tf do you hate amazing musicians? Gtfo
@@thewalruswasjason101 it's so annoying
@@thewalruswasjason101 How can you say someone is incorrect about their tastes?! 😂
