The torque values also fit with what you'd want - the only issue is the way the torque drives the tires in low-grip situations.
Crossplane in-line 4s, V-twins and big-bang V4s essentially operate by providing small bursts of torque rather than a continuous drive. This makes a huge difference with grip at the limits (think reverse ABS). I don't know what the characteristics of this kind of engine would be, but if it operates similarly then it'd be great!

Back in the 1970s lubrication technology was the demise of our rotary engines longavity in my opinion..My RX3 burnt out the Apex seals countless times at around 50 thousand kms average..The oil i was using clearly wasnt doing its job..So a gokart racing mate of mine back then told me to run my rotary on a 50:1 premix fuel using castor oil..That new rebuild amazingly lasted 80 thousand kms till I sold the car..Its unreal what a good quality lubricant can do for an engines life.

    • @brentsummers7377

The 12A engines also had another serious weakness. Water would leak into the combustion chambers, possibly because of heat perishing the rubber type seals - the equivalent of a blown cylinder head gasket. At 0:26 you can see those tiny grooves on the rotor housings where the rubber seals would go. Usually, the engine would get seriously overheated leading to warped rotor housings which would have to be machined, or thrown away if too badly warped. This exciting development would happen as early as 50000km!

Liquid piston engine sounds like the perfect solution as a range extender in EV's. Either only to produce electricity, or in addition help drive the car at speed, either through a torque converter or a e-cvt. Hybrid solutions would be smarter since each car only would need half the battery, or even less. It's probably cheaper and easier to produce hybrids compared to pure ev's with huge batteries.

Takes me back to my '73 Mazda RX-2 rotary days, 4 speed manual in orange. Really fun to drive. Boy, could you rev them out! I don't think they had a real red line. The tv commercials of the day used to say they hummmmmed. My dad used to say they hummed because they didn't know the words.
I remember that it had a manual choke set in the dash to the left of the steering wheel. Never saw that before or since. Doing tune-ups was different too. It had two distributors with two sets of points in one, a single set in the other and one condenser in each. And two spark plugs for each rotor that were different kinds (leading and trailing).
I think I got about 18 mpg but gas was cheap (until the oil embargo that is). I put 93k on it before I got rid of it. Still ran fine but it had turned into a real rust bucket which was typical of a lot of cars back then.

@@ocrapo9327 Although the rotary engines generaly do not last as long as a conventional piston variants, the various sayings 'replace at so and so km/miles'' are just wrong.
A properperly used and looked after rotary engine can last a few hundred thousand kilometres, but if you are to thrash it, meaning you rev it beyond it's supposed to, do not lubricate it as it needs, do not let it warp up and cool down as it needs it wont last much, but neither will a conventional piston engine.
The ''not lasting'' issue is even more exaggerated on the rotaries because people who usually own them envisige them to be super powerfull and fast (in original form which they are not) so they thrash them without the proper knowledge to taking care of them, so thats why the market is full of wrecked rotary engined cars, hence the common misconception.
I owned, modified and raced rotary engines, they are just like any other engine, but yes in fair comparison they are about roughly 70 percent the life expectancy, fuel economy of a comparative conventional engine.
Yet they are 700 percent more fun. : )

There's a place for all engine types in the marketplace. There have been diesel powered, hybrid, electric, multiple types of gasoline (ICE) engines, hydrogen powered, natural gas powered, and biofuel vehicles on our roads for a long while. In the past, there were steam powered (ECE) vehicles also. The US market has always allowed for multiple technologies and that will continue for as long as people still demand them. This idea that we are going to replace one completely is absurd. The Amish still use horse and buggy. That alone shows that old technology still has a place.

They are comparing it to a basic 4 & 2 stroke piston engines that you find in lawn mowers and generators. Those engines are very poor in efficiency compared to the engines you find in modern cars so liquid piston engines might not be very efficient and according to their website, they might only be suitable as a range extender or in a hybrid powertrain.
When it comes to piston engines, they have valves and have a lot of displacement to mix the air/fuel mixture so they can do lots of tricks to maximise the efficiency of the combustion as well as reducing carbon monoxide, soot, NOx, and unburned fuel. So keep this in mind.

WOW!!! This new rotary engine sure looks promising for the smaller engines, especially for the purposes you pointed out. Regardless of of the limitations in comparison to the piston engine, it still looks like an “engineering marvel” of today!!!

Love the concept of the liquid rotor engine. Introducing hydrogen into the fuel system would solve a ton of emission problems. See Roy McAlister on running on hydrogen on YT. Resizing this to work with cars and trucks would be mind blowing.

It would push emissions to wherever they occur in generating electricity to make the hydrogen, transport it, and store it.

I hope that one day, we can go back to a simpler life with simpler things. I'm so sick of this fallen world as it is today. Most people have no clue the evil being done right under their noses.
