John Williams just celebrated his 90th Birthday! The music he has composed for the Olympics always makes me so excited when NBC uses it to open their coverage each day. Perhaps if he's still able bodied and um... around for Los Angeles 2028, he'll get to deliver another superb performance at conducting Summon the Heroes in Olympic stadium :)
Hopefully he might, because we have been waiting since Atlanta 1996 and Los Angeles last hosted in 1984 and it is good to see Olympics are back in Los Angeles in my hometown.
That this theme has stood the test of time since 1996 speaks for itself. It's an historic thing that will forever be attributed to the Atlanta Olympics. Furthermore, say what you want about the Atlanta games but they were great too. The world uniting, declaring common ground in one venue dispite so many fractures and open wounds; to blithely critique and criticize the "finer points" of an opening ceremony in such a setting seems so inconsequential. But of course people will do it regardless.
That's awesome. How hard was it to remember where to walk and when? From my limited experience, that kind of stuff is hard to get right. Very cool indeed
@Mario_N64 idk if this person did but you absolutely could cause older brother was one of those kids too and we had his old costume in the attic and i would get yelled at when i would put it on as kid lol
I remember that night It was the summer before my senior year of high school I was in Michigan watching it it was an unforgettable Olympics I'm almost 38 years old I went to the special Olympics world summer games in Athens Greece 5 years ago won 2 golds And 1 silver in the sport of swimming and 5 years later I'll watch our USA swimmers compete for gold in rio I'm excited to see the swimming events and see Ryan lochte and phelps battle again
My old high schools band did this song in my senior year and one of the trumpeters was a soloist. I was just about 2 years old when this was first performed.
This is the greatest piece of music ever performed....And to have Dick Enberg's great voice speaking over it is just as good as it gets in human achievement.
If there is anything wrong with these incredible rituals and music, it is only that we don't live up to our own ideals. This is wonderful. John Williams forever!
I always love the opening ceremony at every Olympic games, because it shows some spectacular shows the performer etc, and the highlight is the lighting of the Olympic flame into the cauldron to open the games.

Great, just great. The previous Olympic opening ceremonies are just truly wonderful from Moscow, Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, and Beijing. They're just wonderful. I can't express the wonderful feeling when watching these ceremonies by words, unlike the London crap, Britons have no knowledge of the Olympics even someone said, "opening ceremony london 2012 should be 2000 topless babes" bah! That was the worst comment ever. A lot of countries would boycott if it was did.
Your right Samaranch did hate Atlanta from the begining...this was the greatest opening ceremony ever..not to mention the greatest games ever were it counts...in the competitions.
No. It wasn't about the Centennial Park Bombing, or some transport woes, or those vendors who foolishly set up their commercialized stalls in places that weren't heavy on tourists, or even the over commercialism of the Games. Juan Antonio Samaranch comes from Barcelona and having just had the games there 4 years prior, he logically took a break from claiming Atlanta was the best ever.
Samaranch was never going to call Atlanta the best games ever, even if Atlanta had none of the operational issues nor the bombing. He always saw Atlanta as the consolation prize, because Athens was woefully underprepared to host in 1996 and the fact that the Greek organizers essentially told the IOC that they deserved the games just because it was the 100th anniversary. Plus the fact that millionaire donors and sponsors are harder to bribe than city officials and politicians, something that really surfaced and tarnished Samaranch's reputation when bribing and kickbacks were revealed in the 1998 Nagano Winter Games.
Summon the Heroes is a lovely piece, BUT, it doesn't compare to the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Theme, which is still used today in some broadcasts for any Olympic Games.
that could have been something to do with it. As well as the over-commercialization of the games from a display of genuine culture to a pop culture/ capitalism extravaganza
With the possible exception of elpsiconaufrago, I must be the only person who thinks John Williams is grossly overrated. I've heard people claim Williams is as great as Beethoven; I have no idea why, and it annoys me that people think of him as the "Olympic" composer. André Matthieu's music for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal was breathtaking. John Williams' music is formulaic and boring to me. I really hope that a Chinese composer will write the music for Beijing 2008, and not John Williams.
You're kidding right? Atlanta was arguably the worst Olympic Ceremonies ever. Even the IOC former president agrees, by not calling it the "best olympics" as he did for every other olympic game ceremony
Andrew Young made note of this in the 20th anniversary. "The man can't go back to Barcelona having claimed Atlanta was the best ever. There's just some things you can't expect a man to say".
The trumpeters around the top of the dome. So bomb.....

Or they’ll reuse the 84 theme
That opening with all the trumpets around the stadium,GOD THAT WAS AWSOME!
People still play the trumpet feature/solo to this day. It’s amazing
I played this in a honor band, its by far one of the most enjoyable pieces to play if the parts are played right.

This was one for the ages. And the voiceovers by Dick Enberg and Bob Costas, just amazing..
This was played during Channel 7's Olympic coverage for bumpers and intros v/o'ed by Craig Willis
Funny 15 years later nbc still uses this music too bump out on 2014 Olympics !
What an absolutely beautiful song!!

John Williams is the man. Every composer can learn how to compose from HIM
I'm glad someone recorded it, it was this very moment that changed my life forever!
This is the greatest piece of music ever performed....And to have Dick Enberg's great voice speaking over it is just as good as it gets in human achievement.
This was the best Olympics!
If there is anything wrong with these incredible rituals and music, it is only that we don't live up to our own ideals. This is wonderful. John Williams forever!
I'm here to relive my first job
And that Olympics... the US summoned Kerri Strugg who sealed the first Olympic Team Gold on one unforgettable Vault landed on one feet.
John Williams is a legend. Greatest composer to ever live.
As of the time of writing this comment, there were 96 comments for this video. What a coincidence.
Weird to think my brother was one of those kids in the weird costumes :o
que linda la marcha de Atlanta convocado a los heroes............y lindo recuerdo
Williams and the ASO, the Coolest Combo ever!
So beautiful
Man I love a good opening ceremony and this was superb!
I always love the opening ceremony at every Olympic games, because it shows some spectacular shows the performer etc, and the highlight is the lighting of the Olympic flame into the cauldron to open the games.
Thank you. I appreciate that! :)
My friend was there as a competitor in the race walking.
John Williams is the best composer of our time.
john Williams is fantastic!!
Nothing too special, but John, as always, saved the day.
It was a good opening ceremony for 1996 standards
AHHHHHH memories

he is a legend
During Beethoven's time, people said "He's no Mozart" :) They were right. :)

i had to play it at my high school's graduation ceremony (for the seniors)

Those were the days😭 when things were simpler 😭no terrorism, no wars, no mass refugees 😭 and my dad was still alive😭
unfortunately, there were definitely wars and a terrorist attack in Atlanta occurred a few days after this video.
@@WrenchBreaker the last one was Sydney 2000
I fell in love with this when my alma mater's marching band performed this a few years ago.
Great theme
The Olympics from 2004 onwards was tough because of security & 9/11 in America.
@harleykman
I do agree si much. I thought for sure he would talk through Jessye Norman's later finale solo
exactly.
The best theme for Olympics. Ever!
Hello I will stop you in your tracks, have your heard of Olympic Spirit by the same Williams for the 1988 Olympics?
@dnmukhra I can agree, however Beijing was in 2008, Atlanta was in 1996. They did the best they could for the time period.
I wish I had been there...too bad I was just a year old. :/
Oh definitely.
Yes and every game since then has been commercial to some extent.
@sportysocrchik98 He's one of the best of the World!!
Thanks to the American Red Cross and my hosts!

Why did the IOC block "Call to the Nations"?
I hear a lot of different influences in his works; Richard Wagner, Copeland ...
Atlanta 2024
Keith Mauldin Paris
How many trumpeters were there, anyone know please.
petronopulas 20
I still can’t figure how the children in white were able to know where to go to make the formation so perfectly
Practice
@@joshuafischer684 hard to believe a bunch of 7 year olds could do that even with practice

@edwardinkling I was three!! Wasn't it just awesome??
I'm not English, but I don't think you can judge an Olympic opening before it happens.
Great, the Olympic games, congrats, the sydney 2000, year mint 1996, thanks,

I think the fact that a bomb blew up in the Olympic Park had something to do with him not calling this the "Best Olympics Ever", don't you think?

just me or does it sound like it belongs in star trek
Summon the Heroes is a lovely piece, BUT, it doesn't compare to the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Theme, which is still used today in some broadcasts for any Olympic Games.
You're right, Summon the Heroes is better!
it should be Athens' games but the theme song the Power of the Dream is a great work
pretty good but the 84 version is still the best.
when you think Olympics music you think this and the Olympic fanfare
Not enough haha there can never be too many Herald Trumpets!!
I like the 1984 Olympic theme and fanfare better
You should be kidding! London?! Of course not. Barcelona, Sydney and Beijing have been the best!
I personally thought the London opening ceremony was fantastic. I would even go so far to say it was the best ever.
Oh I agree. They just end up coming off as cheesy and melodramatic. The music creates the feeling of awe, not thier stupid little comments.
@KDALove I'm a fan of Hans Zimmer, but he does not compare to John Williams.
that could have been something to do with it. As well as the over-commercialization of the games from a display of genuine culture to a pop culture/ capitalism extravaganza
this piece needs to be revived in the Tokyo 2020
today's sports ceremony is now full of shit music

Great piece of music for the worst Olympics ever. Luckily for the IOC Sydney got if right 4 years later & gave the "Best Olympics ever".
Stuart Grandquist Atlanta wasn’t the worst ever.
Barcelona 1992 the best ever Olympics
As far as opening ceremonies go, Athens 2004 was the best, in my opinion.
