DM: So Colby what are you playing for this one-shot? Colby: I made a bard. DM: …You have 17 levels of Bladesinger. Colby: Yes but I started as a Bard and took another level to get Jack of all trades. Plus he sings! DM: I said no more Bladesingers. Colby: *Starts singing Enya* DM: Get out.
I always interpreted Bladesong as hearing the songs of the Weave, the rhythm of pure magic. So the Bladesong wizard is dancing gracefully in combat to a song only she can hear.
That’s really cool, I am playing a blade singer right now whose blade song is kind of like that. It is him channeling the resonance of the inter workings of the weave through his arcane focus and warping the space around him.
I flavored my character's bladesong as, her sword was in constant motion and emitted a funereal howl as it carved intangible runes through the air. But OOC? Bet your bottom GP it was the Santa Esmerelda cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood".
This is how I have always viewed it as well, though in my game song, story, and legend form a separate plane which bards and bladesingers tap into for their magic.
Truly there is a Bladesinger for every occasion. You’ve turned them into one of my favorite subclasses and I’m happy for an excuse to try another one. Congrats on one year, here’s to many more!
18:15 Trip Attack actually doesn't require a melee attack; it requires a weapon attack. As such, an archer can stay back and trip enemies in the front line. Doing so would be disadvantageous (generally, anyway) for you, but it is possible and would help your allies
@@imthejman85 while Hawkeye has some unique arrows, I've only ever seen him in a more serious role. I've seen GA in some goofy roles, including boxing glove arrows. I like to picture my battlemaster archer that way lol
In case is curious as to why Shadowblade has the 1silver material component requirement now, it's because if the spell has materials less than 1silver, then you can use the component pouch as the material component. So without the 1silver requirement, you could Booming Blade by swinging your component pouch. The intention is that you actually required a weapon instead of attacking with the component pouch. JC said the material component change was not intended to prohibit Shadow Blade+Booming Blade.
I think you've been mistaken a little bit about the reasoning for the silver requirement. RAW, it says that you have all the components in your component pouch as long as they don't have a cost. So previous to the change, you effectively had infinite weapons in your component pouch.
@@anniedarkheart5224 No problem, I had to make a full explanation to my DM in an attempt to keep the booming blade/shadow blade combo when tasha's came out. I was nervous because I had already built my bladesinger around that combo.
I did something similar with my bladesinger, I brought him up to 20th level in my campaign and he was Bladesinger 17/Echo Knight 3. He was super powerful since he could use his action surge and Unleash Incarnation to make six back-to-back attacks with shadow blade for a huge nova. 30d8+72, for a whopping 207 average psychic damage
@@zomarleyonwriting8322 I'm obviously late to the party. But personally I would go Fighter 1 > Bladesinger 6 > Fighter 3. So it comes online at level 9. But I think this has the least amount of pain points throughout the leveling process.
23:21 fun fact, your familiar can treat you as an independent, intelligent mount. It would then use its turn to ready the help action, triggering when you would make a melee attack, and as long as you don't take an attack of opportunity, neither does your rider. So, this works great with rogues who can bonus action disengage. Best one for this build is definitely an owl, but for rogues, or anyone with the mobile feat, they can use whatever they want. I'm personally using a weasel on my soul knife/bladesinger
Readied Actions are performed after the triggering event. If you readied Help with the trigger when you make an attack, the readied Help action would happen after the attack. Which would be pretty terrible for the Rogues without Extra Attack. You'd want the trigger to be "Help Action when moving within range of an enemy;" that would trigger during movement and Help before the attack.
@@anniedarkheart5224 good point. Soul knife can make a bonus action attack, but then I wouldn't be able to disengage. I'll keep that in mind if I ever get to play that character again. That campaign fell apart
Seeing you do another bladesinger build made my day. Playing a wizard and smugly grinning at the DM when a 20 doesn’t hit is sooo satisfying, I love this subclass so much
The problem with this is when the DM gets frustrated because they can't hit you and keep adding more and more monsters to the combat, then are shocked when it suddenly turns into a party wipe.
I agree, my current bladesinger has 20AC in bladesong, 25 with shield. I also have fairly good saves (managed to get a luckstone so that helps). My DM tries to narratively weave our level ups into the story and he was frustrated last session because he wanted to showcase my level 10 bladesinger ability to negate damage, but never managed to hit me. LOL
I play a warforged war wizard 10 who dipped 1 level into order domain cleric. My AC is 23 with some magic armor and shield that I’ve found. due to subclass features and spells it can spike up to 32 with a shield spell while concentrating on shield of faith. I have an 80 hitpoints maximum, and my DM usually whittles me down with save effects. I’m decent but f saving throws too, but my reaction takes my leveled spell casting away and a lot of damaging effects save for half damage on a pass.
Huge congratulations on the full year Colby! I've followed every build so far and intend to continue doing so until year nr.2 finishes up! So glad you started this channel, and I hope you can keep finding joy out of keeping the d4 network a living hub of goodness :)
My bladesinger build: fighter 2, bladesinger 9 (up until now). The combination of action surge and 5th level spells is so powerful I can't even handle it. 4th level hold person, then 5th level steel wind strike does a ridiculous amount of damage. Also, congrats on the AMAZING year. I look forward to many more and many more subs seeing the fantastic channel.
sounds great. auto-crit steel wind strikes are awesome. not my preferred approach (as i think your build is better at aoe, while i prefer single target) though but yeah action surge is great on bladesingers or any build for that matter.
I Got A 8th Level Bladesinger, (3rd Level Fighter / 5th Level Bladesinger), We Were Fighting 4 Bad Guys, Then I Casted SWS & Then Action Surged & Did It Again & They Just Died, lol... U Just Gotta Love: ACTION SURGE + STEEL WIND STRIKE Combo...
Congratulations on one year! I been watching and listening to you from two months. Originally stumbled across you looking for a blade singer build. Love all the ideas you've given. Thank you for all the hard work.
Prestidigitation is the answer for everything you want to do outside of combat, don’t question it, it all works. Also, saying prestidigitation is super fun and makes you feel wizardry and intelligent.
i used prestidigitation to mimick a blood spray after a guard chopped off the head of the illusion i was wearing my dm didn’t even make me roll deception for that
Some examples of many uses in my experience: Snapping fingers to clean blood after combat; Two uses to turn *ANY* cup of water into hot cocoa (one use to heat it up, second to flavor it, max three uses per caster, two casters can make three hot cocoas) Snap finger every 6 seconds to clean ground below your feet so you never step into mud Create smell of fart so that you ruin/improve NPC interaction Draw a dick on someone's forehead
It's great to see that you done another bladesinger, i am so hyped on this subclass, because of your previous videos. Before i watch them i never considered bladesinger as real alternative to hexblade, now i think It's fulfiling all my fantasies about Gish in DnD, so thanks you! BTW also thanks for recommending Stormlight Archives and Brandon Sanderson as writer. I finished Mistborn series and now i'm wrecking throught Stormlight. I love it, i love it, i love it! So, once more - thank you!
If you're interested in a Bladesinger/Paladin but are unsure how to make the stats work, might I suggest a Tortle? You can dump DEX and use STR since the former no longer matters for your AC, meaning you could rock a stat spread looking like 16 STR, 15 CON, 14 INT, 13 CHA, 8 WIS/DEX. First three interchangeable of course, depending on what half-feats you might want. Great video as ever!
You know what I think Tenser’s Transformation is great for? Your simulacrum. It has less Hp than you so that 50 temp HP is helpful in combat, and if you find a way to caste haste on the simulacrum as well you’re now getting more out of the spell. And it would free you to casting other spells while your simulacrum runs wild, and since the simulacrum doesn’t recover spell slots anyways it feels less restrictive that you can’t cast other spells while you have tensers active.
Its 9 o clock on a saturday. The regular dm shuffles in. Theres a colby sitting next to me Waiting for the combat to begin. He says "dm can i reroll a shadowblade?" Ive got an idea how it goes. Because fighter is l33t, With gunner as his feat, And studded leather for clothes. La-la-la de de da Nat 20 da da da Sing us a sword youre the shadowblade Sing us a sword tonight. Were all in the mood to roll 20 And youve got us critting alright.
Played your bladesinger 2.0 build through Princes of the Apocalypse and was not disappointed. I kept a lot of people alive. I had an oath of ancients Paladin in the group and together we tanked a lot. Thank you for a very creative and sound build. Hoping other subclasses get the attention that bladesinger got in tashas.
As a fan who has been watching this channel grow, I really want to say that you did amazing job and all these fans are the fruitation of your hard work. Please continue your great work and thank you so much for the video!!!
Colby, congrats one one year! I love all your content. Your Aneria team is the best playgroup on youtube. You have me completely obsessed with bladesingers. My bladesinger uses a rod spell focus and projects the shadowblade from the end to get around the RAW booming blade. Here's to 10 more years! Edited my comment to tell you I've upgraded to Silver membership.
yey. nova build! will comment as i go along. happy 1 year homelander! glad you came around on multiclassing for the bladesinger. about to finish my own burst bladesinger's (stoneslinger) campaign in a couple of weeks. I'm glad this is built around shadowblade as i'm looking for ideas on how to optimize that as well as i like the spell but haven't found the right chassis for it yet. moreover, i hope this means you veer away from a animate objects and we actually see a dedicated gish. i think it's ok to delay extra attack i think for this build as you can work off of booming blade until you get extra attack which means your dmg doesn't drop off too much especially if you can trigger the rider dmg often enough. i'd skip toll the dead and pick up minor illusion + mold earth. liking this build so much more than your 2.0. Well done Colby! i like the gunner idea and quick toss with shadowblade. personally i'd skip bladesong so i can nova asap. it's not like we are slouches ac and concen wise with shields, shield spell and con save prof. i'd do it this way: bonus action: shadowblade action: trip attack + booming blade action surge: pushing attack + booming blade reaction: brace or another way to play the action surge is: menacing attack + booming blade move away and trigger oaa and hope they miss so you can trigger riposte.
Just started my Bladesinger last week in a friend's game. I started one level in Artificer for proficiency, but I really did it so I could have what I like to call a BardPod. It's basically an iPod, but she puts in some earbuds at the start of combat, pops Bladesong and hits play on the BardPod and that's her "Bladesong". For power it steals a little arcane energy whenever I cast spell so it never runs out of battery. I have song for every occasion.
I’m planning on doing a fighter/bladesinger character in a game soon, but I’m doing 1st level fighter, 2-7 wizard, 8 fighter, 9-19 wizard, 20 fighter. I don’t think action surge is worth delaying all the spells and extra attack for.
Yeah I agree I did 8and 9 fighter though and took Psionic Warrior as subclass, really works well with the int and elven theme, and doing extra int dmg is pretty good.
I have to disagree. Action surge allows you to cast 2 spells in one turn as long as their both actions. My go to with my blade singer is 4th level hold person on 3 targets (best I can afford in spell slots currently), then steel wind strike (5th level) which will have advantage and autocrit on any of the targets who failed their saves. It's extremely powerful, the few times I've used it I've done over 250 damage in a single round. Granted it's spread over 5 enemies but it doesn't get much better than that at 11th level
@@danielfaubert1903 well at 11th level he would have the actionsurge anyways. And wouldn't you have done more with 2 fireballs? It should be 360g on average.
@@Samueras Interesting. I hadn't considered that. It does have its restrictions though. Can't really be used if your party is in the mix unless you want to kill them all. Also, I find this fits the bladesinger style better by being melee attack based. BTW, I did the math fully for both to get the most accurate representation and it's actually a comparison of 264 avg. dmg (4th level hold person + 5th level steel wind strike) to 332.5 avg. damage (4th + 5th level fireball). Seeing as what I was comparing was at wizard level 9, when you only have one 5th level spell slot. Still a fairly big difference, and I'll be keeping it in my back pocket for future use, but personally I find the finesse of my original combo more useful.
Every bladesinger should cast true polymorph on a large rock, turn it into a Shield Guardian, and then spend the 1 week and 1,000 gp in components to make a control amulet for it. (The amulet is not attunement) Have your shield guardian cast haste
Yeah man, get a shield guardian at level 17. Near at the end of the game, and at a CR level where your guardian is going to get stomped on every combat encounters. WHAT A GENIUS
Love the vids! One note: booming blade damage only triggers when the target WILLINGLY moves five feet. So... won't activate when you use the push maneuver. Keep the vids coming!
i think you missed his point on the push. he meant push the enemy away. the enemy is standing in an area where there are no targets within reach so he'd have to move and trigger booming blade dmg to attack another target.
I love the video. The only thing I would change is I would have gone Echo Knight over battle master for the fighter subclass. The Echo is a infinite teleport option that also lets you generate free attacks from your echo's location
i think colby skipped this as he generally stays away from outside the core 3 books (tashas, phb, xanathars) unless the subclass is heavily requested as aot of tables don't allow stuff from the setting specific books unless playing in the specific setting.
Quick explanation no one asked for... 😏 This is a 5e rebuild of a 4e Swordmage that I played to level 11. So this is also a chance to revisit a character that got me back into D&D.
@@Slaughterhouse_Floor I think Bladesinger (@6th lvl) and Eldritch Knight (@7th) are probably the only subclasses that cantrip is any good for. I've added it to my Bladesinger build, but I haven't had a chance to actually play test it yet. Hoping my group will be able to get together soon. Scheduling and Covid have made that uncertain. 😔
I loved your video where you chose the whip to make a build around. What about builds where you pick a race? Ex: The most optimized build you can only get while using a halfling race. Maybe focusing on rerolls?
Ooooo feels like there’s lots of opportunity here. A dwarf monk tank who uses Xanathar’s dwarf only feat that lets them spend a hit die when they dodge, so you dodge with a bonus action as a monk to heal and be harder to hit. Pretty sure Treantmonk did this recently though
I'd pick kobold for this build for pack tactics. Once you summon a familiar you can have them on your person, counting as an ally within 5 ft procing your advantage.
See its all well and good to play a non-elf bladesinger - but this is what I did/am doing on mine. High elf (naturally), noble (just because), starting fighter up to level two just as you did. 3rd level is when I started my wizard levels, delaying extra attack a little less. The key difference in the overall build is the race, and for that reason the fighter subclass I chose. Elven accuracy is SO good with shadow blade, and then you take champion. The great thing about this build is the sheer amount of dice you are rolling on each melee attack. Combine that with a massively expanded crit range and you are generally critting once and not uncommonly twice per round. In my experience, with the expenditure of a second or a third level spell slot makes for really reliable 10-round damage. Great frontline fighter with that high AC, the really spicy damage, and it conserves higher tier wizard resources for those casts of encounter-ending spells like hypnotic pattern.
Speaking of booming blade, i stumbled across a very fun combo with my whisper bard/rogue build. Get in melee, cast dissonant whispers then with warcaster use booming blade as your reaction and you add the "psychic smite" from bard and sneak attack
booming blade rider dmg will trigger on their return but not when you force them to move away as booming blade doesn't trigger on forced movement. the combo is still valid but the dmg is just a bit delayed.
@@TheRobversion1 it isnt forced movement because they use their reaction to do it. Unlike a push, they do trigger booming blade and opportunity attacks
@@Mr911superstar opportunity attacks are indeed triggered but JC has said that it doesn't trigger booming blade rider dmg as they freely have to use their movement. twitter.com/jeremyecrawford/status/725170510569467904?lang=en
I’d flavor my fighter levels as psychic abilities to really “sing” to the Jedi vibe you’ve got going here. I would have liked Psi Warrior here but they don’t have an option to bonus action attack. You COULD go Martial Adept and Superior Technique for your first feat/fighting style respectively, but you lose out on the 18 Dex at level 1. A lot of options here, if you’re just looking for the flavor of it.
I’ve been watching for a few months now, dude your quality is off the charts for such a young channel, kudos bro! You’re doing an incredible job man :) keep it up we’ll all be here
I did mine with two levels of rogue at the start and mobility. She's in an out of danger so fast! While singing she can go 150' per round. Likely going BS the rest of the way.
Currently playing a 6th level bladesinger and have been considering multiclassing so much, and I think this video has convinced me to start taking fighter levels (with the added bonus that it fits his character)
Just a fun note here, if you do make it to level 20 you get 9th level spells and can Shapechange into a Marilith. Bladesong still works while transformed as you still meet all the criteria, and you would get 7 attacks, could action surge for another 7, and a bonus action to quick toss... I'd call 15 attacks a nova round, right?
:') I love this build. I've mostly DM'd and only played a few characters, but by far my favorite to date is my Fighter/Bladesinger. I chose Eldritch Knight as my subclass for the increased number of cantrips. Not all the players at the table are optimizers and 1 is new, so I wanted the flexibility that came with having Blade Ward or Sword Burst n didn't need the damage. We've been playing over a year now though... and after this build... I may have to retrain my subclass for that sweet sweet damage boost! 😈 Very interesting idea to use the gunner feat for the +1 Dex AND no disadvantage on ranged within 5ft.
If we're dropping build ideas.... I need a grappling gunner. Think John Wick and his judo/gun fu.... gun could be a thrown weapon or a crossbow, but sharpshooter and the grappling rules seems like a fun combo.
Congratulations on the anniversary Colby! I always look forward to your videos. Thanks for putting so much effort into turning D4 into what it is. For what it's worth, vocal criticism of your build decisions does not equal being dissapointed with you. And if someone is taking the time and effort to explain the reasons they feel a certain way, that is not the actions of a troll. 😉
Thanks! Oh I have no problem with criticism - I *do* occasionally get people who tell me very specifically they are disappointed with me, and those are the ones I'm poking fun of here :).
@@DnDDeepDive I can't even imagine using the phrase "I am disappointed with you" or anything similar in regards to a person's D&D theory building efforts. That is...odd.
Happy Anniversary! Thanks for all your work and calculations Artificer 3 (Battle Smith), then Wizard (Bladesinger) all the way. It gives medium armour and shields from the outset, plus as a battle smith you get Battle Ready at 3rd level, which means you can use your Int modifier with any magical weapon (incl Shadow blade!) You can pump Int earlier, and still get level 9 spells at level 20
i think he doesn't factor in getting level 9 spells as he generally does his final dmg report at 17. i don't as well as i theorycraft my builds for leve 10 and dont' consider tier 4 stuff as most people don't play those levels. artificer 3 is indeed a good dip though for a variety of reasons (infusions especially replicate magic item, int attack, steel defender) i'd still 2 levels of fighter for action surge.
I'm confused. why not take fighter 1 - wizard 1 - fighter 2 - wizard 6 - fighter 3 - wizard 20. this seems alot more reasonable for me since you'll get extra attack at 7tg level instead of 9th and you will still be able to abuse the sleep spell.
You get a move action, action, and bonus action in a round taking 6 seconds. Time wise a bonus action is less time consumed than a full action. Thusly most DMs (with this argument) would allow a move action, a bonus action as full action, and a bonus action. As long as your actions do not exceed the amount of actions you can take per round based on current rules(action surge being the outlier).
What you brought up about the simulacrum spell gave me an interesting thought. Now this idea is 100% campaign and DM specific, so it might not be something you’d want to pursue. But the thought was “What if you optimized a wizard for getting rich and using all of those wonderful (but expensive) spells that you would normally seldom use?” I’m reminded of a high level campaign I’ve been in where I played a Doctor Doom type Sorc/Artificer who had a whole kingdom at his disposal. Money was no object (which I think is common at level 17+ where you can wish for 1,000,000 gold daily or whatever the limit is RAW). I wonder how quickly you could make money not matter in a build going for a rogue-ish wizard who steals coin from under the nose of even dragons maybe.
True Resurrection has no market value cap... the richer the person who lost someone, the more they will pay, and you can easily twist this greed into being "good" because you are restoring a life.
Multiclassing bladesinger is quite fun, but so stat hungry. The last one I did was for a oneshot vs a tarrasque. I went 2 levels bladesinger wizard and 18 levels sword bard. Our dm did grant us a few non-legendary magic items (bracers of defense and scimitar of speed for me) and with magic secrets (shield of faith) I calculated that "on average" I could have soloed the tarrasque. To get there, my average AC for that fight was above 30 and since I used my 9th level spell slot for foresight, I was basically unkillable.
Hi, I just watched all your most recent Bladesinger videos, they are great. I wanted to see how the integration of multiclassing would change your previous Bladesinger Builds, and wanted to hear or read your opinion/optimization of my build. I always felt the stand alone Bladesinger was excellent, but needed a few things to take it to the next level. I came up with a Divine Bladesinger Paladin which is a build that I felt would address my concerns. There is no non-multiclass Gish that has the survivability, magical utility, action economy and high sustained DPR that I was looking for. Basic concept, 8 levels of Bladesinger/8 levels of Divine Soul/4 levels of any Paladin and the starting feat Meta Magic Adept. The Paladin levels can vary 2-4. Meta Magic Adept will in the short term help alleviate delaying extra attack, with Quickened Spell. Example, Action Green Flame Blade and Bonus Action quickened Booming Blade. Meta Magic Adept in addition to giving you yet another meta magic option, you also need Extended Spell, gives you 2 free limited use Sorcery Points. Extended Spell is for long duration non-concentration spell, such as Mage Armor, Aid, Death Ward, Etc. Divine Soul gives more cantrips/spells/spell diversity. Charisma will be low, 13 min and a suggested max of 14. Charisma casting will relegated to non attack roll or saving throw spells, like Aid, Death Ward, various healing, etc. For Paladin you need 2 levels for Smite, but I suggest getting Channel Divinity at 3 and the ASI/feat option at 4. The Paladin Subclass I felt didn't matter that much mechanically and could be left open for roleplay purposes. Survivability is increased by casting Extended Mage Armor, Aid, and Death Ward before a Long Rest. If you are an Elf the spell duration will carry over for 12 hours after your Trance is over and you have your spell slots/sorcery points back. Level 5 and higher spells can still be learned via copying scrolls into your Spell book, results may vary depending on Arcane proficiency/availability of of desired scrolls. At level 20 you will have a level 9 spell slot, and only be down 2 spell slots in comparison to a full caster. Martially you have and a fantastic and diverse attack option and the potential to extend the physical assault with another melee cantrip as a bonus action, all of which can be smites. Alternatively you could cast a spell and still smite with a quickened Booming Blade/Green Flame Blade. At it's core a Divine Bladesinger Paladin is a Bladesinger with Divine Magic, Meta Magic, and smite. I'm very curious and look forward to your feedback, Peter Thompson.
My Bladesinger is a pacifist High Elf Noble. Tries to stop all fights unless pushed to the edge and his Bladesinger rage takes over - Genesis In too deep. Prestidigitation is a must, best to look clean and smart while in front of the men.
1st attack +familiar for advantage+trip 2nd attack +advantage (if tripped)+booming blade 3rd(bonus action) you can throw of shoot at someone within 5 feet, throw your shadow blade+push attack to push them 15' and now they have to move back to you.
Problem is, you can't throw your Blade as a Bonus Action without using Quick Toss, and you can't use both Quick Toss and Pushing Attack on the same attack :).
Have you analyzed an eldritch knight 7 + bladesinger build with shadow blade? Wouldn’t come fully online until 13 when you can make a booming blade attack, an extra attack, and a bonus action attack. But it’ll still be a good build before then because bladesinger and fighter is always best. Eldritch knight would also still help 3 levels of spell progression to upcast shadow blade.
The first video of yours I watched was Bladesinger 2.0, when I was looking for a Bladesinger build. Hexblade is my favorite build, but this is a similar one... superior in higher levels, for sure.
My DM is running an entirely home brewed 2-year in the making campaign. He has dubbed it his God-killer campaign. Myself and one other player were the only ones to show up to the one shot so we got an extra boon. He let us pick any subclass on d&d beyond homebrew. So I found the Dragonknight Paladin. Basically I got a homebrew oath (Oath of Conflagration) on top of the base paladin class abilities. And can shape into a dragon. Young at 5th, adult at 10th, ancient at 20th. He's allowed and encouraged this. Please help me break it more. At 18th level I can cast in dragon form and get a free daily dominate monster at 15th
I watched 2.0 like 3 times before starting my newest campaign and wish I did this! Tinker bell play style is going on in my other campaigns, so I went shadow blade! DM ruled BB can work with SB. First night and found out we’re going toward the everdark, which is really exciting for advantage. Did fighter 1, 4 BS. Was planning on doing echo knight to 3 after 6, but now considering battle master. Great video!

Awesome video! Question, if you Quick Toss the Shadow Blade, does that mean the next turn you have to use your bonus action to summon it again? I know its only 5 feet away but if you threw it I think that means it technically left your hand right? So not a big deal, just means you couldn't Quick Toss on the turn after.
Theory crafting I don't think con saves are as important for bladesinger since you get +int to concentration checks while bladesinging. Which in general will be better or equal to prof bonus for the majority of the game.
Our DM pretty regularly tells us what he rolled on his attacks. or he asks what our AC is (even tho he has it written down) and tells us "it just hits you" or "yea you're not dodging this one" Because of this Defensive duelist is a great feat pick for me personally. Getting a +4 to AC with my reaction is pretty great.
It's hard to multiclass Bladesinger effectively because Bladesinger is basically an inbuilt multiclass by itself. xD I am also curious to play a Lance-wielding Bladesinger; does require a mount but you can acquire one in game, multiclass for it(ideally 6 levels of Lore Bard to learn Find Greater Steed) or use Phantom Steed(although it's fairly useless in combat so I'd keep that as a backup if your mount dies). In terms of using Shadowblade I had a fun idea of storing a concentration spell(that you intend to target yourself with) in a Defense Rune cast on a scroll(kept somewhere safe) and linking that to Drawmij's Instant Summons so you can make it appear and immediately incur the trigger condition. It has to be 3rd level or lower(so probably either Shadow Blade or Haste) and is of course an expensive(1200 gp), single use strategy, but in terms of an ace in the hole prepared for tough boss fights it's nice having the potential to unleash. Also just using dual Shadow Blades is a cool image(especially if the scroll acts like a hilt) and I don't think there's any other way to achieve this short of specific items and they wouldn't allow you to do so for the full duration.
If you go Artificer first, you can achieve an absolute AC GOD. I think the ideal Bladesinger AC God is starting as a Warforged (cause I love robots), starting with artificer (cause con & int saves, also they start with studded leather armor which is the greatest Light armor ever). After your 1 level in artificer, take the 2 levels in wizard for bladesinger, that with your +1 AC from warforged and the studded leather armor would be the exact same AC as using mage armor so no need to expend the spell slot for mage armor or even learn mage armor in the first place and you can bladesing immediately with the best light armor. The ideal play here is that your AC will be 12 (Armor) + 1 (Warforged +1 AC) + Dex + Int (Bladesong) + 5 (Shield Spell Reaction). You can get a +2 bonus to this later with infusions and then you will be the ultimate AC God but that's up to you. If you want even greater AC at later levels, you can get another +2 from the Haste spell which both Artificers and Wizards can get so your preparation turn would be a bonus action of bladesinging and your action would be casting haste on yourself and then haste grants you that additional action for which can be used to make a weapon attack. After 3rd level, keep going Artificer until 8th level cause flash of genius reaction is too good, your saves will be awesome and you get artificer infusions, pick Battle Smith for the Artificer Subclass so you can have a construct companion and you can use intelligence for magic weapons, you can also use your infused items as your spell-casting focus; I suggest you infuse your leather armor with either enhanced defense (makes it +1 Magic Armor, becomes +2 at 10th level) or Resistant Armor (you gain resistance to 1 damage type of your choice listed in the infusion). After 10th level, keep going wizard and you will end up with 8 levels in artificer & 12 levels in wizard. Furthermore, if you ever spend 2 levels into Fighter for that action surge, take the defense fighting style for +1 AC while wearing Armor because AC God. If you want 9th level spells then you could either just start 1 level in artificer for con save proficiency and then go wizard bladesinger the rest of the way or you could have 3 levels in artificer then get 17 levels in wizard for just barely getting 9th level spells at 20th level. Entirely up to you, I love this build for its versatility and I hope people actually read this comment.
i read it. * casts subtle upcasted magic missiles. action surges and does it again.* hehe. messing around aside, sounds good if you want to be sturdy. not my preference though as i'd rather kill the opponent 1st on round 1-2 (burst) than tank hits.
@@TheRobversion1 Yeah I was thinking more survivability, Artificers caaaan be used for nova damage with the same principles described in the video, the only major differences would be using intelligence for the shadow blade (if your subclass is battle smith), different save proficiencies, starting out with the best light armor, and enhancing that armor with a potential infusion (I like the Resistant Armor infusion cause it's one of the only ways to get Force damage resistance aside from Bear Totem barbarian). But generally Artificers are meant for support. If d4 Deep Dive actually pulled off an effective nova artificer build then I would reeally be impressed cause dayum.
@@criticalhitx1048 nah the biggest difference with your build is losing out on fighter. it isn't a nova build without action surge 95% of the time. i do agree though that artificers can be used for nova (i have a couple of burst builds that dipped artificer and 1 that mained). this is more true at level 11 as artificers become one of the best nova chassis in the game (action surge gets beaten here though of course it's best to combine action surge with a level 11 artificer). being able to do 30d8 + 20d6 with catapult in one turn at level 12 without using your action AND bonus action is bonkers dmg for that level. i'm not Colby but i can definitely pull off a nova artificer build. i'll share the level 10 theorycrafted version here (actually played until level 13 before): the boomstick rune knight 3, artillerist 5, grave cleric 2 zariel tiefling: crusher (quarterstaff) fighting style: superior technique runes: cloud, fire cannon: protector infusions: spellwrought tattoo (self): find familiar, spellwrought tattoo (familiar): bless, spellwrought tattoo (familiar): fog cloud, spellwrought tattoo (self): goodberry tactics: on non-combat day: use find familiar tattoo and goodberry tattoo for use the next day. take a long rest. end of long rest. switch out goodberry and find familiar for bless and fog cloud. tattoo both on the familiar. activate protector cannon until you have max temp hp on everyone in your party. cast aid while you're at it. we won't be using our spell slots really aside from healing, support or utility. 1st round: move to bbeg bonus action: branding or searing smite from zariel, or giant's might action: path of the grave the bbeg action surge: booming blade crusher + activate fire rune + arcane firearm + branding smite + maneuver familiar: use bless if bbeg is medium or smaller. use fog cloud 5 ft above the ground if bbeg is large+. move away reaction: cloud rune so the dmg report is: 1d8 (quarterstaff) + 1d8 (arcane firearm) + 1d8 (booming blade) + 4 (str) + 1d6 (maneuver from superior technique) + 2d6 (fire rune) +3d6 (branding smite). that's 3d8 + 6d6 + 4. whatever the result, double it. if bbeg moves back towards you, that triggers booming blade rider dmg. it's not broken nova dmg but it's pretty decent at about 77 average without magic weapons. round 2: bonus action: giant's might/protector cannon action: booming blade crusher familiar: help
@@criticalhitx1048 I'll take that as a compliment. :) the build was inspired by a challenge of optimizing a striker artificer without using using gwm/sharpshooter. was happy it turned out decent enough as a striker and was able to contribute to the party in other ways with bless/fog cloud, aid, temp hp, healing, guidance, etc.
I did a Psionic Warrior Bladesinger a startet as fighter 1 took bladesinger 6 and then got fighter to 3. Really liked it that way. I always take warcaster as my first feat and it is really cool to get it at lvl 5 when cantrils get extra dmg.
I rolled really well, so i am able to multiclass into paladin without construction loss in upcoming campaign. I am also planing to use elven accuracy without custom linage, so it os possible to see really bomb nova round
DM: So Colby what are you playing for this one-shot?
Colby: I made a bard.

Colby: Yes but I started as a Bard and took another level to get Jack of all trades. Plus he sings!

I was happy to see another bladesinger video, but eventually i just wanted this ending xD.
You are not our dad lol great call
This comment is one of the funniest things on UA-cam
I always interpreted Bladesong as hearing the songs of the Weave, the rhythm of pure magic. So the Bladesong wizard is dancing gracefully in combat to a song only she can hear.
That is an awesome ideia!
@@arcee9810 Great song, you inspired me to play it right now.
This is how I have always viewed it as well, though in my game song, story, and legend form a separate plane which bards and bladesingers tap into for their magic.

18:15 Trip Attack actually doesn't require a melee attack; it requires a weapon attack. As such, an archer can stay back and trip enemies in the front line. Doing so would be disadvantageous (generally, anyway) for you, but it is possible and would help your allies

JC said the material component change was not intended to prohibit Shadow Blade+Booming Blade.
agreed. i think allowing the shadow blade + booming blade combo is fair. my DM currently doesn't allow it but perhaps in the future.
I think you've been mistaken a little bit about the reasoning for the silver requirement. RAW, it says that you have all the components in your component pouch as long as they don't have a cost. So previous to the change, you effectively had infinite weapons in your component pouch.
@@danielfaubert1903 Thanks :)
@@anniedarkheart5224 No problem, I had to make a full explanation to my DM in an attempt to keep the booming blade/shadow blade combo when tasha's came out. I was nervous because I had already built my bladesinger around that combo.
My DM, WON'T Allow Shadow Blade + Booming Blade or The Green Flame Blade Combo's... 😭😭😭
I’m thinking about doing this. I dipped into fighter for lvl 1. When would you take the next two levels?
@@zomarleyonwriting8322 I'm obviously late to the party.
But personally I would go Fighter 1 > Bladesinger 6 > Fighter 3. So it comes online at level 9. But I think this has the least amount of pain points throughout the leveling process.
Was his blade song "Bury the Light"?
Because that just sounds like Vergil.
How Do U Get 6 Attacks ???
@@jeffadams9807 extra attack for two unleash incarnation for the third action surge repeat to get up to six
The Princess Bride reference? Wow, I didn't think I could like this channel any more than I already did. I was wrong!

@@DnDDeepDive back at it again! Love the puns man.
Thank you!

Prestidigitation is the answer for everything you want to do outside of combat, don’t question it, it all works.
Also, saying prestidigitation is super fun and makes you feel wizardry and intelligent.
You can also use it to put out flames, which could come in handy for Shadow Blade darkness/dim light advantage.
i used prestidigitation to mimick a blood spray after a guard chopped off the head of the illusion i was wearing
my dm didn’t even make me roll deception for that
Some examples of many uses in my experience:
Snapping fingers to clean blood after combat;
Two uses to turn *ANY* cup of water into hot cocoa (one use to heat it up, second to flavor it, max three uses per caster, two casters can make three hot cocoas)
Snap finger every 6 seconds to clean ground below your feet so you never step into mud
Create smell of fart so that you ruin/improve NPC interaction
Draw a dick on someone's forehead
Don't forget it has a verbal and somatic components, unless using subtle spell it's obvious you are spellcasting...
Yes!!! The best!
Sanderson is a prolific writer.
@@joshholmes1372 So nice in a world of Martins and Rothfusses (whom I also love!)

Thank you thank you! :)
yey. nova build! will comment as i go along. happy 1 year homelander!
glad you came around on multiclassing for the bladesinger. about to finish my own burst bladesinger's (stoneslinger) campaign in a couple of weeks.
Well done Colby!
i like the gunner idea and quick toss with shadowblade. personally i'd skip bladesong so i can nova asap. it's not like we are slouches ac and concen wise with shields, shield spell and con save prof. i'd do it this way:
bonus action: shadowblade
action: trip attack + booming blade
action surge: pushing attack + booming blade
reaction: brace
or another way to play the action surge is: menacing attack + booming blade
move away and trigger oaa and hope they miss so you can trigger riposte.
22:52 it's message and the abilitity to communicate telepathically is just so much fun i love it
Just started my Bladesinger last week in a friend's game.
I don’t think action surge is worth delaying all the spells and extra attack for.
agreed. action surge is a 6th level spell masquerading as a 2nd level ability though so it is worth considering picking up asap.
(The amulet is not attunement)

@@TheRobversion1 Oh that makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying!

Can’t wait for this to hit the apple podcast app so I can listen to it on my flight tonight!

You’re doing an incredible job man :) keep it up we’ll all be here
Thank you!
I just started building my first bladesinger, watched your 2.0 video, and this is perfectly timed 😂
Woo hoo!
Congrats on the anniversary!
Thanks!
"it's hard to make [monks] really good"
I believe those are called "fightin' words"
Just a fun note here, if you do make it to level 20 you get 9th level spells and can Shapechange into a Marilith. Bladesong still works while transformed as you still meet all the criteria, and you would get 7 attacks, could action surge for another 7, and a bonus action to quick toss... I'd call 15 attacks a nova round, right?
:')
I love this build.
Very interesting idea to use the gunner feat for the +1 Dex AND no disadvantage on ranged within 5ft.
Great build! I would also love to see your take on a Rogue/Bladesinger. Congrats on 1 year! 🎉
Ha ha thanks! Though it’s been closer to 4 now 😉. I’ve got rogue/bladesinger on the to do list!
Congrats Colby, cheers.... here's to many more years of excellent content.
If we're dropping build ideas.... I need a grappling gunner. Think John Wick and his judo/gun fu.... gun could be a thrown weapon or a crossbow, but sharpshooter and the grappling rules seems like a fun combo.
@@michaelbeal1400 Thanks! ok on the list!
@@DnDDeepDive as always, you da man
I already loved this channel, and a thrown in Eddie Izzard reference? Perfect.
Tea and cake or death!
Congrats on one year! Love the content
thanks :)
3 levels of fighter before any wizard... Inconceivable!!!! 💙💜🖤
@@maxcoto9061 ha ha - right!?
Happy Anniversary! Thanks for all your work and calculations
Artificer 3 (Battle Smith), then Wizard (Bladesinger) all the way.
You're the reason i love bladesinger!
Awww!
I was so hoping for Battle Smith Bladesinger!
I wonder how replacing Battle Master with Echo Knight would look...prolly would cause issues with Action Economy and overall damage
Dont forget its only replicating spells that doesn't risk you casting wish again(outside of homebrew like i do at my table)
True Resurrection has no market value cap... the richer the person who lost someone, the more they will pay, and you can easily twist this greed into being "good" because you are restoring a life.
Magen, True Polymorph "my last command to you is to obey this guy, your new master"... boutique pets/guard "dogs".
Prestidigitation is a must, best to look clean and smart while in front of the men.
love it.
1st attack +familiar for advantage+trip
2nd attack +advantage (if tripped)+booming blade
3rd(bonus action) you can throw of shoot at someone within 5 feet, throw your shadow blade+push attack to push them 15' and now they have to move back to you.
I played a Greenwood treant type ranger in AD&D. It was in the old ranger guide. It was pretty fun.
Stop taking advantage of your dm rofl
I watched 2.0 like 3 times before starting my newest campaign and wish I did this! Tinker bell play style is going on in my other campaigns, so I went shadow blade!
DM ruled BB can work with SB. First night and found out we’re going toward the everdark, which is really exciting for advantage. Did fighter 1, 4 BS. Was planning on doing echo knight to 3 after 6, but now considering battle master.
Great video!
Happy Anniversary! Great show, I guessed right...Bladesinger! Loved the Princess Bride references 😍
Thanks!

You could also be singing to harmonize with your blade!
The Greenwoods Ranger was also a kit in AD&D "Complete Ranger Handbook"
Theory crafting I don't think con saves are as important for bladesinger since you get +int to concentration checks while bladesinging. Which in general will be better or equal to prof bonus for the majority of the game.
This episode was so funny and entertaining. I loved it!
Thanks!
The video I didn't know I was waiting for but now that it is here, I see the light now.
Our DM pretty regularly tells us what he rolled on his attacks. or he asks what our AC is (even tho he has it written down) and tells us "it just hits you" or "yea you're not dodging this one"
Because of this Defensive duelist is a great feat pick for me personally. Getting a +4 to AC with my reaction is pretty great.
Colby: "Why hello there."
Me: "General Colby!"
ha!
When I was little, my Dad actually used to call me "Obi Wan" or "Obi Wan Kenobi," so this totally tracks :P
nice but remember i have the high ground!
More more years, congrats!!!
I’m playing a Bladesinger Harengon, and he likes to use his bonus action to Jedi flip during combat
It's hard to multiclass Bladesinger effectively because Bladesinger is basically an inbuilt multiclass by itself. xD
I am also curious to play a Lance-wielding Bladesinger; does require a mount but you can acquire one in game, multiclass for it(ideally 6 levels of Lore Bard to learn Find Greater Steed) or use Phantom Steed(although it's fairly useless in combat so I'd keep that as a backup if your mount dies).
@@criticalhitx1048 nah the biggest difference with your build is losing out on fighter. it isn't a nova build without action surge 95% of the time.
i do agree though that artificers can be used for nova (i have a couple of burst builds that dipped artificer and 1 that mained). this is more true at level 11 as artificers become one of the best nova chassis in the game (action surge gets beaten here though of course it's best to combine action surge with a level 11 artificer). being able to do 30d8 + 20d6 with catapult in one turn at level 12 without using your action AND bonus action is bonkers dmg for that level.
i'm not Colby but i can definitely pull off a nova artificer build. i'll share the level 10 theorycrafted version here (actually played until level 13 before):
the boomstick
rune knight 3, artillerist 5, grave cleric 2
zariel tiefling: crusher (quarterstaff)
fighting style: superior technique
runes: cloud, fire
cannon: protector
infusions: spellwrought tattoo (self): find familiar, spellwrought tattoo (familiar): bless, spellwrought tattoo (familiar): fog cloud, spellwrought tattoo (self): goodberry
tactics:
on non-combat day: use find familiar tattoo and goodberry tattoo for use the next day. take a long rest. end of long rest. switch out goodberry and find familiar for bless and fog cloud. tattoo both on the familiar. activate protector cannon until you have max temp hp on everyone in your party. cast aid while you're at it. we won't be using our spell slots really aside from healing, support or utility.
1st round:
move to bbeg
bonus action: branding or searing smite from zariel, or giant's might
action: path of the grave the bbeg
action surge: booming blade crusher + activate fire rune + arcane firearm + branding smite + maneuver
familiar: use bless if bbeg is medium or smaller. use fog cloud 5 ft above the ground if bbeg is large+.
move away
reaction: cloud rune
so the dmg report is:
1d8 (quarterstaff) + 1d8 (arcane firearm) + 1d8 (booming blade) + 4 (str) + 1d6 (maneuver from superior technique) + 2d6 (fire rune) +3d6 (branding smite). that's 3d8 + 6d6 + 4. whatever the result, double it. if bbeg moves back towards you, that triggers booming blade rider dmg. it's not broken nova dmg but it's pretty decent at about 77 average without magic weapons.
round 2:
bonus action: giant's might/protector cannon
action: booming blade crusher
familiar: help
@@TheRobversion1 Good Sir, you are a madman oml 0_0
@@criticalhitx1048 I'll take that as a compliment. :)
the build was inspired by a challenge of optimizing a striker artificer without using using gwm/sharpshooter. was happy it turned out decent enough as a striker and was able to contribute to the party in other ways with bless/fog cloud, aid, temp hp, healing, guidance, etc.
Oh, wow, the Eddie Izzard reference... what a classic
A kensei monk is a great multiclass for the bladesinger, you can make shadow blade one of your kensei weapons for some really cool tricks.
