The protest by the Samsung India Workers Union has reached its 20th day, with no resolution in sight despite multiple rounds of talks between the company and the workers. The deadlock has left 1500 employees sitting in an indefinite protest near Samsung’s Sriperumbudur manufacturing plant, pressing the company to accept their key demands. These include recognition of their newly formed union, wage revisions, and changes to their work timings. TNM’s Shabbir Ahmed spoke with CITU State Secretary Gopikumar, on the reasons behind the protests and the factors contributing to the ongoing stalemate in negotiations.

एक टाइम में ज्यादा मांगों पे more number of demand पे focus and being adamant for each & every demand could be result in fiasco

Rarely unions have benefited developing nation, in fact through out history, strong unions have only destroyed the factories and countries. IT is successful in India because unions aren't there.
Let market forces determine the wages and working conditions. Remember we have crores of unemployed youth around, more the unions, less the new companies form. Checkout living examples of Kerala, bihar and Kolkata.

It is very pity to say that an employ getting only 26000 thousand per month in a multinational company and after 20 years they are getting 30000 rupees . At the same time the same job has around 4 lakh rupees in Korea. Still this type of horrible situation of labourers... some commenters supporting the management and abusing citu....one thing we keralite don't want such job in Kerala, if u setup factory one should follow the laws of the land. Tell me a state which has developed and created more employment and development because of Tradeunion especially CITU. They will destroy the industry and employment for the benefit of its leaders and few employees. Kerala, Kolkatha and Tripura are examples. We need more jobs and not trade unions. If the Company does not pay as per government rates then strike should be allowed not otherwise

TNM should first do a story on the exploitative working conditions in media houses wherein even mainstream print and television media employ people on yearly contract with no benefits of PF or even gratuity and even lower wages than the striking workers of Samsung, but their ethics won’t allow them to do so😢

Please see what ‘strong unions’ and communists did to Kerala. Nobody wants to do business there. The State is bankrupt. No major business centre or economic centre despite being the most illiterate state. The state completely depends on foreign remittances. Pathetic way to run a state. We, TN, are already a welfare state. Please don’t push us into extinction like WB or Kerala.

@@annamalaian0711 Well articulated. Tamilnadu has always attracted good Investors to start engineering, automotive and white goods. Chennai is the biggest beneficiary. Too much of the external migration of quality skills from Chennai to rest of India and abroad, replaced by very poor quality local migrants from other parts of TN into Chennai is the problem. If we don't address this it will affect our overall economy. There are very few states with such Job opportunities and a very large work force in the north and northeast waiting to gobble upon! AI will ensure this happens sooner than later.

In a capital deficit country, the govt has to support investors. The workers have to attend to their livelihood and someday when India owns the intellectual property like the Samsung's of the world, then it's possible to unionize.

Tamil Nadu has a least labour efficiency in the country. So unions and exploitation of companies by socially illiterate should be handled with iron hands. I appreciate the state government and Samsung to take an iron hand to ensure that there is no union. The best solution is to have contract workers, replacing the 1500 striking workers. The need of the day is to throw the 1500+ unfair greedy workers and replacing them with contract workers. If rule has to be amended against unionisation the Govt has to do.

Majority of lazy, inefficient and socially illiterates in Tamil Nadu are going to go out of jobs very soon because of the attitude shown over three decades. I hope you are not in the list. I am speaking with some of the corporate management here to plan out a 25% decrease in work force each year and have offered my services of consulting to achieve it.
