I have to say I have been looking for several days now for information on setting up my old EWI 4000s, that I had set down along with all my sax's ten years ago. At 72 I've decided I need one more go with my horns and the Ewi. I saw your first course and skimmed through it, and discarded it, to my dismay and three days later, I heard someone mention your "Course" So I returned and watched the first episode, to the end. I then saw Lesson 2, and with utter chagrin, I discovered the rest of the episodes! JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKIN FOR! Mahalo Nui Loa! I'll be back for more comments in a week or two! Thank You!
Hello, excellent demonstration, I am a French, I manage little in English speaking, and I manage well to understand you, thank you for this clear explanation. A short time later to have seen your video, I was convinced, consequently I purchased the XV-2020, I am not going to use it with an EWI, but with a keyboard and a sequencer (MV-8800). I have it for a week, and I am very satisfied with it, thanks to you I was able to choose a short and cheap expander (150€). Thank you very much my friend.
Cool I have the Roland XV2020 (with Patchman) and also the Yamaha VL70m (without Patchman's sound set). I also have the Yamaha FC-10 foot pedal with 4 controllers attached (for Volume [7], Breath [2], Portamento [5] Balance [10] and Modulation [1]). Lots to play with! One of the best things about the EWI (as opposed to the Yamaha WX-5) is that it can output Aftertouch data rather than Breath. I aim to use that with the Korg Digital Edition synth tones designed by Patchman. Great videos Alistair!
Great lessons! Sooooo… looks like you haven't been able to add more lessons after #9? Bummer! Hope that means you've been busy playing music! Bought an EWI online today. Can't wait to receive it!
Hi Alistair, Thank you very much I have gained quiet a lot of information I did pick up the patch from patch-man and I am enjoying playing. Thanks !! Your tips are excellent I am based in U.A.E. Dubai. Marlon.
I would also recommend the Ketron SD2 as the best hardware synth (also best deal for your money) for Wind Controllers in general. Especially excellent breathy tenor, flute, trumpet and violin. For the absolute best woodwind and brasses virtual instruments (software synths) look up samplemodeling.
Hello Alistair, Thank you very much for these lesson which are very useful. Your explanations are very clear, and I understood everything. I begin with an EWI 5000 and even with this different instruments, what you explain is very interesting It is also a pleasure to listen to an real english, with a nice accent (comment from a french who often hardly understand american speakers). Hoping for new video from you. Regards Olivier
Thanks for the video. I like the last patch you played. The chords. Is that in the patch? Or did you layer? I want to get that going if I could. I have a JV 1080, and VL 70-m being controlled by a EWI 5000.
Hi Alistair, I just bought an EWI 4000s and found your video brilliant, I am 70 years old and MIDI to me is like chinese I have'nt a clue. Is it straight forward to plug the EWI into a sound module and go or do I need to some kind of setting up procedure, your help would be very welcomed, Thanks Colin
Hi, I'm new to all this (getting the EWI 5000, arriving in a few days). Rolands website says the XV 2020 is discontinued, do you have another sound module suggestion? I will research but I'm new and it's a little confusing...I know I will eventually understand it all, your vids are helping alot, Thanks! (Wrote this before hearing you mention the 5050, will check it out)((it is also discontinued!))
Always love these videos. This one was particularly useful, need to test it with my JV-1010. I know Bernie Kenerson has some of these but could you show us some scale or rudament practice that would help with fingerings for scales or fast passages. I sometimes struggle with playing across octaves or the Bb as it's not quite as easy as on sax. Cheers
Yours is the most comprehensive and useful site I've ever seen on the technical quid-pro-quos of the EWI.Can you direct me to the Alistair Parnel site that might address the question whether an AKAI EWI usb controller, which has only a usb output, would work passed into a usb "hub" where a usb-MIDI adapter has its usb end in a different hub port and its MIDI end is in the "MIDI in" port of a target MIDI device (in my case, a Roland Sonic sound module) that does NOT have a MIDI chip?
+Paul Fleming Hi Paul. I’m sorry I don’t think I quite understand your question. So I understand you’re trying to connect an Akai USB directly to a Sonic Cell? If so I don’t think that works. Does the Sonic Cell have midi in ports? I’d do this via a laptop. So plug the EWI into the laptop and then comment the Sonic Cell via midi to the laptop to make a connection. Perhaps someone else has advice on this?
@@isax.academy From Paul Fleming: Hi Alistair: My Sonic Cell does have all three MIDI ports; My description may be have been too convoluted. +Paul Fleming Hi. I have a feeling this won’t work. I think it’s been tried before. There is a little box by a company called Kenton that might help but I believe the connection you suggest won’t work. The other issue is without the Patchman sounds you’ll find the Sonic Cell won’t work very well with the EWI because the internal sounds won’t respond to breath control. What will happen is you won’t get any dynamic control after the initial attack of the note.
@@isax.academy Hi Alistair: I'll investigate the Kenton box. I know that I'll have no dynamic control but can live with that while I'm getting used to the ewi usb if anything works out. I’ve plugged my ewi 4000s midi out to the midi in on my interface and connected to my MAC using the 5 pin midi cables. I’m not hearing or seeing any connection. Please help! Thank you.
If you have a 2020 be sure not to get the power supply wrong. It is 9V with the centre pin - and outside pin +. This is the classic blow your gear up wiring. Maybe you need to check the settings to make sure they are set correctly?
You’re on the EWI USB right?
Thanks I was hoping I could get it on the mouthpiece. The more I pick the thing up, the easier it gets though. It's learning a new instrument.
Sorry to sound so unimpressed, but you just taught us all that we need to buy Patchman soundbanks, whilst almost pretending to teach us how to alter parameters to get the EWI to control the sound source properly.
The setting of EWI parameters seems to be a guarded secret, and anyone who knows is only interested in generating sales based on their secret knowledge.
It is almost as if Akai never wanted anyone to play the thing.
