Welcome! Join us today for a winter garden clean up! I have to say, I really enjoy these days where I just focus on pruning, trimming, cleaning and putting the garden back together. I actually enjoy the monotony and repetitive nature of the process. It makes for quite a relaxing day! 🧹 Enjoy!
🌿 UPDATE! I now have an Amazon Store where all amazon available products will be located! Looking for a link to my greenhouse? It’s here! Looking for those books I recommended? It’s here too! It’s ALMOST as fun as going to the plant store! 😉

Janie, hint from long time rose pruner. While climbing rose canes are so young tie them to trellis face rather than wind around. As canes get old they will garrote themselves on metal and MUCH easier to re-align each year at pruning time.

I will have to just watch you in your garden. Over here in Arnold we are still buried in snow that has now turned to ice. I failed to prune my Eden rose before we got the early snow the first week of November and it was so big still that it broke it back like crazy. I had to do a butcher job cutting out the damage and now both sides of the arbor it just looks like a stick. But Eden is so tough and comes back like a champ. I should do a video of it and then see how it recovers this summer. The raised beds in your cutting garden look lovely. I love my Western Garden book, it is my plant bible, but mine is from 1988 (I bought it new, aging myself here) so I need to get an updated one. This summer I want to go to the Sunset test gardens. I visited them when they were in Menlo Park (I think, it has been a long time) but they moved. Sunset Garden magazine was a favorite of mine for years.

Much better after you clean up, like your garden. My garden needs clean on April.

Do you ever watch Gardening With Creekside? Jenny demonstrates how to prune roses on today's video. Good info! I do not usually plant roses in my garden because I do NOT like plants that "bite" me! Lol! However, last year, I bought the tiniest miniature rose in a pot. I was going to throw it out when it looked like it was suffering, but my sister suggested I plant it in the ground, so I did. To my dismay, that little rose has survived and is putting on some new growth! It must be one tough little plant... which is kind of a criterion if anything is going to survive in my garden! 😁
    Happy Gardening! 🌹

Great maintenance. There was a point in your day that I was quite content that my garden is frozen and under snow. I guess I''m loving that we have a longer rest time over winter. In March I'll be excited to clean things up for all the blooms.

Thanks for the inspiration! Ha! I wish I could get out and clean up. My energy is down. I think having so many cloudy days is causing it. Maybe you can send some of yours our way. Oregon, the Willamette Vally. 😁

I know the bush clematis from proven winners are only rated to zone 7 but something like that would look gorgeous in that blank spot next to your climbing rose! Loved the video! Gets me so excited to start my spring clean up…in like 3 months 😂

I just went to Etsy and ordered some of the purple hyacinth seeds, perfect timing!! It will be my first time growing them. I had bad luck with black-eyed Susan vine last summer, it grew fine but didn't want to climb for me. Also I would recommend safety glasses the next time you do any vine cleaning. I was pulling a muscadine dime vine and it popped me in the eye pretty good. Hurt for a couple days but could have been a lot worse.

Great job on the rose. You have the hang the of it. You just need the practice to bring confidence. (Roses are my specialty) 🤍🤍

I took a break this past year from my hyacinth bean vine and I missed it sooo much. I’m ready for spring so I can plant it again. Most of my clean up is done as well it’s always so satisfying to get it done. Come on spring!! 😁Happy Gardening.

Love that you sowed flower seeds on city grounds. I have been wanting to sow some morning glory seeds along the hill right under the underpass. I have about 5-6 different varieties. It would be such a beautiful sight to see for the before noon risers!

Looks so nice! I know how you feel with the loss of your baby seedlings. I am mourning the huge Loblolly Pine trees behind me on the school property! Loved to hear the wind whistling thru and seeing wildlife climbing and flying in. I couldn’t talk the power company down from their mission of chopping them down. 😞

Right now I wish it was cool enough to get out and do some clean up in the garden. It’s currently 31°C (87.8°F) here in Brisbane Australia (thankfully the humidity has dropped to 59%!!!), so I’m hopeful that Sunday will be nice enough to get outside for a good part of the morning. Just a question though, if there’s still a lot of moisture around one of the drains, could it be partly blocked (roots, leaves, etc)?

Good afternoon Janey from the UK. I too am in the middle of a garden clean up with the hopes of having my back garden made a bit more level in the spring. It’s too steep for me to manage. I bought a plumbago last year on the back of seeing yours and I’ve overwintered it and it’s looking great. I’ve had it in a big pot and wondered if it could stay in that for the rest of its days?

I do not believe your drains are working properly if they are still draining. 9B is a big place, I am about an hour south of Sacramento. if you are close by I would be willing to use my inspection camera on those drains or loan it to you.
