      In fact, the military action to retake the canal worked quite well, but the French and UK governments didn’t expect the US would condemn the operation, which forced them to back off

    • @sergeantskrtskrt9594
      @sergeantskrtskrt9594 2 роки тому

      @@NovHak Honestly. I believe the Americans seriously regretted condemning the Operation from the newspapers and stuff I've been reading. They realized all too late that Nasser had no interest in working with the West at all and was more interested in pushing Egypt towards a major nation if not the most major nation in Arabia than working with the Middle East to form a bulwark against Communist expansion into Arabia.

    • @woozy7405
      @woozy7405 2 роки тому +6

      @@sergeantskrtskrt9594 It was because it was at the moment at which for the first time in the century the US and Great Britain were on opposing sides. Britain's interests were commercial in keeping the Suez Canal passable, as they were pretty much its only users. America had little need for the Suez. Our interests were geopolitical in keeping communism out of the Arab states, the major test of which was Egypt. Nasser was looking out for his own country's needs and maneuvered the world's major powers into fighting with each other. The US overestimated the footing that communism had among the Arab people after Nasser procured an arms deal with the Soviets and opened ties with China. The US was destabilizing smaller countries in its backyard to keep them anti-communist, but this wasn't possible with a major nation like Egypt. Overthrowing the Suez would do us more harm than good. Hence we wanted to stay careful and not push the Arabs away from the West. We warned Britain against potential invasion and when they did, very comfortably right before the Eisenhower re-election, they went for it thinking the US wouldn't turn their backs and would remain a hesitant ally. We didn't. We condemned it and though the Sevres protocol was beautifully executed for control over Northeast Egypt, it was international pressure that made them back down. Nasser took credit for the victory although he really didn't do squat. Britain finally had to step down from their reign as the world's favorite superpower after this and hand it over to the US. They never recovered from it.
