I started enjoying my journey with Irish whiskey and it will always hold a special place for me. Once I got used to the ethanol I fell in love with the Redbreast 12 cask strength.
As far as my whiskey journey goes, after i really started to appreciate and respect it, i started with scotch. Then i saw there was irish whiskey. I've had plenty of Jameson, and I'm just not a fan. The next irish i had was Tullamore Dew, if i spelled that right. I enjoyed it especially for the price. I just purchased my first Redbreast 12 yesterday from Costco. I think it was around $54. As of right now, this is my favorite whiskey out of scotch, bourbon, and irish. Would be my all-time favorite and go to until you mentioned added coloring. The filtered part doesn't help either. I agree with docking of points. It is still very good nonetheless!
@whiskeyisajourney I'd love to if I can find it! I'm gonna go down the Irish whiskey rabbit hole. I'm trying to decide what's next. Proper 12, maybe bushmills
Nice, accurate review, Peter, as usual! RB12 used to be among my favourites, but it's getting too expensive to drink often. $90 here in Ontario, Canada. Looking forward to the other RB reviews.
@@whiskeyisajourney 1) Taxes! We pay a lot of them! 2) Lack of competition. Here the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario controls all sales of wine and liquor. And the Brewers Retail controls sales of beer.
100% agree on having no clue what the shortbread cookie note is and 100% agree with the score. Great review Peter! Looking forward to the rest of the Redbreast lineup reviews.
Just bought this whiskey from the spot down the street from me, got it for 49.99, bunch of other spots it’s going for almost 60, so I’m pretty hyped on that, cheers my guys
Great review as always Peter! When someone tells me they don’t like whisk(e)y Redbreast 12 (40%)is what I give them and they usually say, well I like that! Then I know I can start introducing them to other stuff. My personal favorite from Redbreast, and probably all of the Irish whiskey I’ve tried, is the 15.
I gravitate toward the 15 and the PX edition. I see the same thing happen with the people that say they don't like whiskey. It's mellow and sweet and I start them on ice and they like it. Thanks and cheers!
Perfect presentation of a classic. A lot of people have gotten their feet wet with the Redbreast 12. It was a favorite of mine until I tried the Cask Strength version. I'm not much of a cocktail person, but who hasn't heard of the Irish Coffee..?!?!
I had to look at my tasting notes. I wrote that this was my favorite Irish to date. I got some tart red fruit like Rainier Cherry, a ton of vanilla throughout, some short bread, and bitter lemon zest and spice at the end. I can't wait to try the barrel proof.
After I had the cask strength I rarely go back to this one. Cask strength is one of my favorites. Let me know what you think of it when you try it. My guess is you will probably get the same notes, just turned up. Unfortunately, my current bottle of RB 12 CS is not as good as my last one or the one before that. Cheers!
Great review, Peter! I agree with your take. In my limited Irish whiskey experience, Redbreast 12 is noticeably a step up from Jameson, etc. A very good sip!
Thanks! When I got into whisk(e)y this was my gateway. There was no looking back from there. Blessing or curse not sure yet. My checking account would say course. My friends would say blessing. 🤪
Redbreast is one of my favorite Irish Whiskey's. Unfortunately in Alabama it's up to $78.00. The 12yr CS is $100.00, I just bought another one (it's my favorite RB, leaving out the 21 & 27). I passed on the 15yr this time, it's up to $140.00. I like the 12yr CS more, so lucky for me. I also like the PX Edition which is allocated here and is $115.00. Thanks for another great review.
@@dwaynesbadchemicals AL is state controlled so they set the price at the ABC stores. Some are right what they should be some are higher. It's all about revenue, the state gets more money.
I haven't had this one for ages but I always keep the Cask Strength on the shelf, its an excellent whiskey. I have a couple of their Dream Cask bottles which are good but expensive for what they are, I can take or leave the rest of the range though.
I agree. I actually don't have any Jameson in my collection. My sister and brother in law have one at their house and I will dip into it every once and a while.
Prices keep going up on this in my area. I was just in Total Wine today and the RB 27 jumped from $800 to $1000 overnight. Looks like all Irish whiskey is on the rise. 👎
Jameson 18 year is my favorite. Just got this bottle as a gift. I’ll share it with the guys when I leave Israel in a few weeks. Now I’m curious to compare it
I agree. It is getting too pricey for a 40% expression. I have been wondering if the price of whisk(e)y will ever come down or will it just keep going up and then crash once people are priced out of what they like and just stop buying.
It's crazy how fast and high Irish whiskey it going up in price. I think it is going up faster then any other type of whiskey out there. That's unfortunate.
I think it’s because bourbon went up so high-people started looking for cheaper substitutes and now Irish whiskey enjoyers are paying the price, literally
I have a bottle of this but a complete novice to the whiskey world - when I taste it I don’t know what I’m tasting. Maybe my pallet is not developed yet 😅
Do you like it? If you said yes then that's all that matters right now. Identifying notes will come soon enough. Just enjoy it as it is and don't worry about being new to whisk(e)y.
I think the whiskey is inferior to about 5 years ago. I believe they are using more ex bourbon casks and fewer sherry casks to age the whiskey. This makes it cheaper and less labor intensive (since they actually need to make their own sherry to season casks now). But without the 'christmas cake' aroma and distinct sherried barley note the whiskey had it is not nearly as good.
You are not the first person I've heard say that about the casks. I'd like to get my hands on an old bottling and compare. Thanks for sharing the information. Cheers!
@@garrettspillane4599 As I said it is being aged more in bourbon casks instead of sherry. And multiple reviewers who tasted it pre pandemic have said the quality has gone down
This whiskey so far is hands down my favorite and it's not even close.

Love the way you break down your process to dissect the tasting notes Peter

12 is my favorite

Redbreast 12 is a solid starter irish, along with jameson. Good overview!

Try and get your hands on the cask strength Redbreast 12. In my opinion it's one of the best Irish bottles out there.
Excellent assessment
Thanks! Cheers.
thanks for the review, planning to buy this one :)

Great review Peter. Redbreast is great across the board, though I do consider this one is getting a tad too pricey for a 40% expression. Sláinte.

My favorite go to whiskey - $70 in the great state of Texas- $45 when I first started drinking it - that was in Virginia
It sure is a solid go to whiskey. Cheers!
I drink woodford and eagle rare. Haven't had Irish whiskey. Might have to pick one up

It's interesting that I tend to favor Irish or Scotch over Bourbon but, maybe I should give it another try with more of a the premium blends?
Favorite whiskey for me.
It was for me as well until I was able to handle the Cask Strength release. Cheers!
The shortbread is the prominent flavor in non aged Irish whiskey.
I enjoy the taste of that note in Irish whiskey a lot.
It's always on my shelf, but the price keeps going up. My favorite is the 15yo.
The 12yo has jumped into the $60-$70 range in NJ. 😢
I go back and forth between the 15 and the 12 cask strength as my favorite.
Never tried it but curious??

Golden raisins come across as sweeter to me than the normal dark raisin. But everyone is different. Cheers!

I think you have to “live” with whiskey and get to know it more. It’s a relationship.
Relationships change over time and so does your palate. Cheers.
Tastes like cheap cognac mixed with nail varnish remover.
And marzipan.
No thanks.
Yikes! Do you get those same notes from other Irish whiskey or it it just this one?
I'd love to see a video of you comparing the full range of them. Best to "worst"
That video is coming in 2025. Stay tuned.
