I think the fact that Rose doesn't even notice that Mickey is NOT Mickey shows how little attention she actually pays to Mickey and makes it less surprising that she chose to dump him and run off with the Doctor.

The mannequins are from the classic show, they’re called Autons. Even though they’re not named on screen in this episode. So that little glimpse over to the window near the beginning was I’m assuming for classic fans. A little bit of a ‘if you know you know’ sort of tease.

I'm sure it was definitely a great hook for viewers on Classic Who. And, probably a little reassuring as well, letting them know the show wasn't completely forgetting its roots.

In the classic Who series from the 60's-80s they even were able to make dolls like the mannequins but parents immediately complained that their children were now scared of their dolls and toys, so they restricted themselves to mannequins from then on.

Just a little bit of (non-spoiler) context about the show. You already mentioned you knew there are different Doctors - I won’t say how this is done, but know that the show started in November 1963 (the day after JFK’s assassination, so the reference in this episode is a nod to that), and ran pretty much continuously until 1989. There was an attempted reboot in 1996 with a TV movie, before this reboot in 2005. But even while it was off the air there continued to be books, comics and full cast audio dramas being produced. Christopher Eccleston is the 9th actor to play the Doctor, so is generally known as the Ninth Doctor.
I reckon you’ll fall in love with this show, and I’m looking forward to your future reactions. Beware of spoilers, though, and try not to look up too much about it as you go along. I’m sure the fan base will help guide you if needed.

This has long been my favorite TV show of all time. It is quite the journey. There are some silly episodes, and sometimes silly constructs in episodes, but the journey through the adventures of the Doctor is worth every moment. The living plastic creatures presented here in this pilot episode are a call back to the original run of Doctor Who, and featured in the very first episode of the third Doctor, so it was a really fun inclusion for long time fans. You don't need to have seen the original run of the show to watch this new version as this show does a really good job of bringing people new to the Doctor up to speed. I do hope you continue this journey. The Doctor Who fanbase is a fun and engaging one here on UA-cam and always eager for new people taking this journey.

Cool rxn! One thing to keep in mind is that at it's heart "Dr Who" is and has been since 1963 a kids show. Folks that dislike the show tend to raise this point as a negative but I think it's actually where the program draws its charm. It also prevents the show from taking itself too seriously, which sets it apart from most TV Sci-fi.

Do yourself a favor and keep going with Doctor Who. There are very good reasons why it has lasted since the original classic series started way back in 1963. It has enormous heart and humor, and can be many things - drama, comedy, horror, thriller, sci-fi, fantasy, emotional human relationships, critique of society. Sometimes several of those in the one episode. It can be both moving and silly at once, but it owns it’s silliness with pride.

I'm just wondering what it would be like if this wasn't a SciFi. If The Doctor was a frontline medic and Mickey was a civilian that found himself a POW. The dialogue could be exactly the same and it would have changed nothing but your perception of Mickey's trauma and reactions to it.

I hope you continue on with the show as its popularity grew strongly this season and even more so throughout the following seasons. Showrunner Russell T Davies (RTD) combined drama with sci-fi with such a blend that attracted non sci-fi viewers in a way that wasn't quite so with the original 1963-1989 run (which are still worth viewing mind you as new Who often refers to that era).
The Doctor saying, "Look at these ears" is giving us viewers hints that he's recently regenerated into what was then his 9th incarnation.

First off, you’ve earned a new subscriber! 😊 I absolutely LOVED your reaction. You’re so enjoyable to watch and you’re very good at paying attention to what’s actually going on, whereas a lot of reactors I see are talking a lot over the video or missing things entirely and not going back, etc. So yeah, amazing job 👏
Secondly, I am SO happy to have found not only an amazing reactor, but a reactor that is watching my absolute favorite show of all time! (I wish it was an exaggeration to say that I’ve seen every UA-cam reactor that is watching Doctor Who or has watched Doctor who 😅)
I highly encourage you to stick with it. I’d love to see your reactions to it 😊 I remember being asked by a friend of mine for YEARS to watch this show and because it was “Sci Fi” I denied her request. Needless to say when I actually watched it I was instantly hooked 😂 and then I did the same thing to my sister who hates sci fi shows even more than I did at the time since she won’t even watch time travel shows. But she loves Doctor Who now too. It’s the type of show that can make you think, make you laugh, make you cry, make you hide under your covers out of fear 😂 and make you squeal and fangirl all at the same time. It’s honestly a masterpiece and I really hope you keep watching. As much as series 1 holds a special place in my heart, it gets SO much better.
Also I recommend you don’t watch the next times, as they can get a little spoiler-y sometimes but especially during finales. Plus sometimes they can also serve to turn you off from certain episodes as I know that happened to me plenty of times when I used to watch the next times. Now I try to avoid them as best as I can 😂
And finally, if you’re watching the show anywhere that’s not HBO max, I’d be more than happy to send you episode orders etc. because there will be some specials down the line and certain streaming services are so bad with the order of episodes sometimes (prime video is one of them and back when the show was on Netflix I literally missed like two specials because they just…weren’t there 😂 so I had no idea they existed until the show was put on prime)
Side note: I apologize for this very long comment XD I’m just very passionate about Doctor Who and I loved your reaction to it 😊

@@BritanyBinges Awe thank you so much for your reply! 💕
You’re welcome 💜 and honestly I couldn’t notice at all! You’re so much better than so many of the reactors I’ve seen who don’t have ADHD and just go on their phones like you said or talk over important bits 😂 and of course I love it when reactors talk and engage with the episode, but like you said, there’s a balance and you have it down perfectly 😊 you got so many things that most reactors don’t get in the first episode XD like the “look at the ears” line and you instantly suspected he wasn’t human then or that he was in a human body 😂 seriously no reactor I’ve seen pays attention to that scene ever.
And yes! Haha I love Supernatural as well but I haven’t seen many reactors. I’m starting to now because I finally finished the show a few months ago and I wanted to rewatch it but didn’t want to put myself through it again, so reactors was a happy middle ground 😂
And yay! I’m glad you decided to do the first series! Like I said, it’ll always hold a special place in my heart and some of my favorite episodes are in the first season. Some people say it is the more “tough to watch” season because the effects aren’t great but honestly I don’t agree with that at all. I mean yeah it was made in 2005 and they barely had a budget when they started so the effects are gonna be a little cheesy 😂 but the storytelling is brilliant and so are the characters, which more than makes up for it in my opinion. As for Rose and The Doctor, their relationship is one I love as well and that’s all I’ll say to that 😂
And you’re welcome! Yeah a lot of people end up watching the next time trailers and get spoiled sometimes (I was one of those 😂) so I’m glad to have told you :)
Oh that’s perfect! Yes HBO Max has the right order and the specials are even in the season they’re supposed to be in. Whereas in Prime Video all the specials are in a “separate” show and you have to look up what specials go with what season and when to watch them. I remember always being confused on which one I needed to be watching 😂

Thank you again for the kinds words. I'm so glad that I was able to notice things others have missed (and that you noticed that). Nothing against other reactors, but I've certainly seen a few who barely seemed to be interested in what's happening and do miss key moments. It's always frustrating as a viewer who loves the show they're reacting to. I'm not saying my reactions are (or will ever be) perfect by any means, but I do want it to be an enjoyable experience for you. :)
If you're going to start watching Supernatural reactions... my two favorites are Dakarajayne and SesskaSays. I think you'll like both of them because it seems like we have similar taste in reactor styles. I'm also considering doing a Supernatural rewatch series on the channel so SPN fans can come together to watch/talk about the show we love and not have to worry about spoilers. Not sure if anyone would really watch though since it wouldn't be an actual reaction.
A lot of comments did say the first half of this series would be a bit cheesy and that it gets better in the second half. I watched episodes 2 and 3 last night and thoroughly enjoyed them. So, if it gets better from there, I think I'm going love it. :)

Doctor Who is a very unique show, in that it is changing and evolving all the time. Each season feels different from the last, characters are growing, coming and going. It's a revolving cast so more often than you think it's keeps things fresh with new faces, both the companions and The Doctor, while also building and continuing and reminiscing on a 58 year legacy.

I did realize with it being different doctors that it does change quite a bit. That's honestly one of things that made me a little hesitant to start it. @@BritanyBinges While each Doctor is mostly unique in terms of personality, quirks, preferences, they are still fundamentally the same person every time. They help people in need no matter the odds. The Doctor doesn't regenerate as often as you might think though, so don't worry about a new face for the main character every season.
Christopher Eccleston was a special case but most other you get so much time with them, and it's always sad to see them go.
I hope you continue though. The show has such a huge fanbase, it feels like there's a lot of us Whovians but almost like there isn't enough. I came into this series having heard about the classic Who my whole life. The last season ended the year I was born and we never got any of the classic Who on Swedish television, so I grew up hearing about it but never seeing it.
So when NuWho started, I got excited. Then 9th turn to 10th and that took me by surprise. Note that during Eccelston's entire run, he never ever talks about regeneration, or him being the 9th version of himself. I came into it blind to any mechanics of the universe, only knowing there was an alien time traveller who went around the universe in a blue police box.
And do remember that Internet back then was a very different landscape, you didn't have social media where you got incidentally exposed to this kind of knowledge.
    It was certainly an experience...

I'm not a massive sci-fi either, but Doctor Who is one of my favourite programmes. If I may, a bit of advice for upcoming eras; if you can, watch at least one story from each of the first 7 Doctors. Not necessarily straight away, as this current era doesn't really make reference to it, but it might help give context to a few things later on.
On your reaction, I think you reacted as you were supposed to. I've not seen any of your other reactions, but it seems you're happy to be guided by the writing and the performance rather than just watching the plot, as a lot of other reactors tend to do. Please keep watching; it's a journey of a lifetime, to coin a phrase.

Another commenter said they're going to give me a list of a story from each of the first seven Doctors to consider watching once I finish this first series. While I didn't originally have any interest in watching any of the Classic Who episodes, it does seem like it might provide for some nice easter egg moments down the line with NuWho. So, I'm willing to check it out and see how it goes. :)
With regards to how I react, all I want out of a show is to genuinely care about the characters and what happens to them. So, if a show can do that, I look past a lot of things. Which I think it why I enjoyed this episode so much. I really came to care for both characters (and the bond they were already forming) in such a short period of time that any cheesy bits weren't enough to take away from the enjoyment. So, I'm looking forward to seeing where this first series goes from here.

Doctor Who is one of the great classic television series of all time. The best thing about it is that it covers so many genres. It can be an historical drama one week, a futuristic sci-fi show the next week, and a comedy the week after that. If you don't like Doctor Who... wait a few episodes, and you're bound to get something completely different all over again. I will say that in Series 1, episodes 4 and 5 are probably the weakest, but the show begins to really hit its stride with episode 6 and improves quite a bit after that. They must be doing something right... next year is the 60th anniversary of the series!!!

    • @DrTenochtitlan
      @DrTenochtitlan 2 роки тому +1

I should also mention that one of the greatest things about Doctor Who as a series is also one of the problems that can sometimes hold it back... it has SO much history, it can be overwhelming sometimes to a new viewer. That's why Series 1 is a good season. It doesn't try to feed the vital information all at once. You get a little bit of backstory with every episode until by the end of the season, you'll know all the important basics that a fan would need to know.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому +2

I have to agree that I really like how they're giving us (me/the new viewer) the information in bits and pieces. It leaves me intrigued and wanting to come back to learn the next piece. I also like that they don't go too long without giving you that next piece like some other shows do.
Out of the first three episodes that I've watched, none have felt like a waste or a filler episode b/c each one has given me more history and more development with the characters and their bond. That's something that even my favorite show of all-time struggled with at times. There were definitely episodes that were 98% filler, but they would throw in one 2-minute scene that connected to the bigger picture. That hasn't happened yet with Doctor Who. :)

@@BritanyBinges While I’m glad to hear you say this, one thing that’s worth bearing in mind with Doctor Who is that it’s very much a show that’s about the journey more than the destination. By which I mean that it’s not an arc-heavy show (although there is a lot of character development), and it’s good to not think in terms of arc episodes and filler episodes. The “filler” stuff is the point, in a way. It’s perhaps better to think of it as an anthology show with ongoing elements and characters, where the idea is to introduce a new culture or idea every week.
Which isn’t to say that there aren’t ongoing plots, but that the show is really *about* taking you somewhere new every week and showing you the end of the world, or introducing you to Charles Dickens, or how the UK would react to a spaceship crashing in to Big Ben (you’ve said in other comments that you’ve watched through episode 4, so these shouldn’t be spoilers). That’s its no. 1 aim - to have you enjoy exploring as much as its main characters do.

      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому +1

@@7rollface Don't worry, there were no spoilers. (I appreciate you checking and trying to avoid giving any).
With this show being so unique in both it's premise and it's delivery, it definitely was (and truthfully still is) a little bit of a struggle for me to fully wrap my head around because my brain keeps wanting to put it into a traditional arc-heavy show format that I'm so used to. So, I really appreciate comments/persepectives like this because it definitely helps me to go into each episode with an open mind.
Luckily, it's far more important to me that I be invested in the characters (and their arc in terms of development) than in the overall plot. And, this show has definitely gotten me invested in The Doctor and Rose already. Hell, I've even been invested in side characters who've only been in one episode (hence the tears you'll see in both episodes 2 and 3 lol).

@@BritanyBinges I'm very glad to hear that. You'll definitely meet more one-off characters that you'll love. There are plenty of "companions who never were" throughout the series.
One things the writers are very good at is economically introducing you to new characters and places and getting you invested in them. It's also part of the reason why it's such a difficult show to write for - pretty much every week you have to start from scratch.

First off... as a fan of the show since before I can remember (so, let's say, 1980), watching this for the first time was HUGE - it was SCARY! The show had essentially been dead for over 10 years, and now it was being brought back and - what if I didn't like it...!? Then, Russell gave us that scene where the Doctor holds Rose's hand and talks about the spin of the Earth and just WOW! It was the first moment I knew the show was in safe hands. It was a very "Doctor moment". Beautiful.
And the other thing I'd mention was the bedroom scene with Rose's mum... it also felt very "safe" as a WHO fan, because in the original run the production team had a saying - "No hanky-panky in the TARDIS" - it was a kids show, and so there was no sex, no kissing, it was essentially asexual. This scene seemed to very much reinforce that they were going to continue that. Of course - I know you're way ahead now, so - we all know that this did not stay "true" to the original era, but - I'm over it now. :) I can live with 10 and Rose, especially the way it was ultimately resolved.
I'm glad that you kept going with the show, and love that although you're "not a sci-fi person" - the show has hooked you in! Especially love when the horror bits get you :) The thing is - you are safe with the Doctor, always remember that. :) :)

This isn't your typical sci-fi show where it's science fiction for the sake of science fiction and not much else. It's heartfelt and sprinkled with humor, humanity, fantasy, love, loss, introspection, and philosophy. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll shout at the screen.
They say there's a doctor for everyone so I hope you stick with it through enough seasons/series to find yours!

It's always interesting to see someone's first reaction to the show - I'm 63 and have been watching DW since I can remember, since the Second Doctor, I believe. This episode had a hard job to do, reintroducing the character for oldies, introducing him for newbies, updating the special effects, updating the very nature of the story - a companion with a boyfriend and a, um, private life would have been a huge no-no back in the day - and generally letting people know what DW was going to be.
I think they did a fantastic job. All right, they made Mickey a bit too cowardly and stupid, and I always thought killing the conspiracy theorist was a bit too far, but on the whole - a fantastic job. Use of 'fantastic deliberately chosen for this Doctor.

It's a continuation. (Hence, the shop window dummies - which were a part of the earlier series.)

Great reaction, by the way! I follow quite a few reactors to _Doctor Who_ and have started watching any reactions I can find to movies I know well, but I've never seen any of yours till now.
You seem to "get" the show right from the start. And you've said some very perceptive things along the way. Including what you said just then about fans who want seem to want to discourage newbies. I think some do, even if they don't realise it. There's a brilliant British comedian, called Dave Gorman, who talks about "extractor fans", fans who suck all the fun out of things by sneering at less-knowledgeable people, saying "I can't believe you don't know...", and later rejecting the thing they claimed to love because too many people have are now fans.
Anyway, I'm pleased you've discovered the show. As you've started to discover, it has many facets to it other than "science fiction". (Although it has "extractor fans" who insist that it is Science Fiction and shouldn't be doing anything else, such as comedy or relationships or social comment) it actually is more multi-faceted and more flexible than any other show. It is science fiction and fantasy and drama and action and adventure and mystery and history and comedy and tragedy and satire and farce and nonsense and romance and horror and social comment and allegory and spectacle. You can view it as all those things or as whichever ones are meaningful for you.

@@paulkennedy8701 Thank you so much for the kinds words! That's so interesting that someone has coined a term for those kinds of "fans" and I think it's definitely an accurate summary of them. I see people like that on just about a daily basis in the Supernatural fan groups I'm in. It's disappointing.

You gotta carry on. It's more fantasy and adventure than Sci-fi. If you enjoyed this ep you will love the rest of the show. :-)

Dr Who is sci fi/gothic horror. There's a looooong story arc about his backstory. The head writer is Russell T Davies and is the biggest Dr Who superfan ever, so many of the stories in this Dr Who revival reference the original series, though it's not necessary to have watched them to enjoy the new series.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому +1

That's really interesting that Russell is a superfan. I feel like that probably makes it more fun for the other superfans who get all the easter eggs he puts in the show.

@@BritanyBinges Absolutely. It's good to know that there is a consistency going back nearly 60 years, and it's always interesting when a villain appears in the new series and now has a much more in-depth back story than they had back in the 60s/70s. THAT is why having a superfan as the head writer is such a good idea. See Cobra Kai for a similar outcome 🙂

You will enjoy it if you give it the chance. I grew up in the Uk when the reputation of Doctor Who was seriously degraded and like you Sci-Fi was not really my thing at all, but out of pure boredom I gave it a chance and fell in love. Of the few Sci-Fi I did watch Doctor Who stood out like it did not care what Sci-Fi was supposed to be...In fact Doctor Who is more like murder mystery show, or Scooby Doo lol - The Sci-Fi often feels like window dressing...but mostly it doesn;t take it's-self seriously, esxcept for those charecters, Doctor Who will make scream with joy and cry your eyes out.

    • @BritanyBinges

I love that you say it's "like it did not care what Sci-Fi was supposed to be". I'm only four episodes in and I can see already that it has a lot of heart. I've already screamed with joy and I cried while watching the second and third episodes, so I'd say it's off to a good start. LOL

Oh, you definitely have to keep going. The premise of the show is that it can go anywhere and do anything, which means that it can literally be a different genre from one week to the next. There’s so much breadth to it, and you will definitely get into the stories and the characters, too.
And don’t worry about it being too sci-fi for you. It’s deliberately written to appeal to people who aren’t usually in to sci-fi and almost all stories are Earth-centric or at the very least human-centric.
I would, at the very least, watch all of the first series (including the first Christmas special). Because nobody had made this kind of TV in the UK for decades it took them a while to work out exactly how to make it, and what kind of tone it should have. I mean, it’s always silly, and it’s always serious, and it’s always cheesy, and it’s always sincere, but you can tell for the first 5-6 episodes that they’re still finding their feet. Watch up to and including the first Christmas special, and I think you’ll find it hard not to continue.
I know this is such a fannish thing to say, but it really is the best TV show ever made. It can go anywhere and do anything and *be* anything. It’s because of this that the showrunner after the one in charge during the episodes you’re currently watching said “I sometimes wonder why the rest of TV even bothers to show up”. Because anything any other programme can do, Doctor Who can do. It takes something that other shows do, and then shapes it into a Doctor Who episode. There really is more to it than you can imagine from just seeing the pilot. There’s more to it than you can imagine from watching the first 4 series. Or the first 9. It’s big, and it’s impactful, and it will make you laugh, and it will make you cry. Guaranteed.

I'm glad to hear that almost all the stories are Earth or human-centric. But, episode 2 definitely wasn't (except for the premise of the episode being that everyone gets together to watch earth die lol), and I was still very much into it. Enough that it made me cry... more than once. lol
I've committed to watching at least the first series (including the Christmas special), but I'm already pretty invested in these characters so I have a feeling I'll want to keep going.
I'm excited to see all the different adventures the show is going to take me on. :)
