The Alkimos was built in just 27 days in Baltimore in the United States in 1943..In 1944 a murder suicide took place on the vessel and a female radio operator was shot dead. Following the war, the ship changed hands a number of times and in 1953 it was renamed for the third time as the Alkimos. In 1963 the Alkimos ran aground south of Geraldton and from that point on the vessel was destined to never leave Western Australia. What followed was a series of mishaps and groundings, and misfortune to however came into contact with the ship.

Have spent many a happy moment on the Alkimos wreck as a kid between 1976 to 1983. My folks had one of 4 holiday "shacks" directly on the beach about 800m to the north. As kids we would spend hours exploring the wreck which at the time still had the accommodation and engine room relatively intact. Dad set up an old crayfish rope on one the collapsed mast beams that was hanging over the port side and my sister and I would swing out into the ocean and swim back through one of the hulls holes into either the flooded engine room compartment or cargo holds.
The holds were a diving marvels.. like aquariums! Beams of sunlight streaming through holes in the hull with massive schools of buffalo brim circling the submerged structure. Another time we went there for a picnic including my grand parents on a calm day. Dad ferried everyone out and we set up our chairs etc on the starboard side of the bow section as it was only about 1.5 m above the water. Later in the day another larger boat came and tied up next to us with a group leaving to explore the wreck. Whilst they were gone their boats line untied and the boat started drifting away. Either my dad of his mate dived in and drove it back to the ship and secured it. On returning the group hardly thanked them for their efforts of even offered a beer in thanks. Not long after one of the group fell through the rusty deck that for the entire day 10 of us spent the day walking over. Dad always recond it was Henry's pay back for the lack of respect.
We were aware of the ghost stories but as a kid my dad and I felt that Henry was always watching out for us. I remember one night at sun set I went with my dad and his mate while they retrevived their fishing net that they set of the stern on the ship. Being in a small tinny there was not room for me whilst they pulled the net in so they left me on the port side of the bow section by myself as they went off. Although getting dark I never felt scared however I still recall thanking Henry for letting me stay and looking after us.

loved reading that Heath, thanks. Just heard about this ship from a book about hauntings in Australia.. all are pretty dire . So it's nice to hear a good one. Seems the respect your family had for the place got a different response from the ghost.

@David McMillan I'm here because of that book too! I read it years ago, and this specific shipwreck has always been in my head.

I got my legs held down whilst sleeping in my Aunts old terrace house. It was my grandparents before my Aunt got married.
My grandparents and three of mums siblings died whilst living there.
I like to think of a friendly ghost fooling around, but at the time I was shitting bricks.

The fact that the ship traversed the Atlantic during WW II several times without being damaged or sunk, alone, suggests that it was anything but a ship plagued with sorrow, bad luck, and any misfortune. The lady being killed was tragic, along with her killer. I would suggest, based solely on your telling of this story, that human error set the fate of the Alkimos into its final motion. That, humans, and nothing more or less than that had a single thing to do with the ships fate.

I just shot a drone video about the SS Alkimos and when I saw your video the history of the wreck really intrigued me.
Your research, footage (and diagram) on this video is excellent! Thank you!

The music you chose for this video feels so appropriate for this cursed ship.
What an incredible dismal history for one vessel. That must have been one hell of a curse she carried.

Thanks for sharing this .... Three of my good mates from had Picked a good day with the swell and winds perfect for a good session... There was no reason from our doings for the boat to mysterically start its journey with our possions to the bottom of the sea floor... We were rescued by a cray boat... I believe its definately got a curse and haunted vibes ... A interesting story for all my partners lets say his name is privacy reasons I will call the individuals related A & B who were involved in the rescue which was A played a huge role in as A held the hatch up with his back to free those who made it... The original Aluminium rescue boat I can say is Safe in our hands....

as a local, these ghost stories were made for children. 100's if not 1000s of divers and swimmers swim at the alkimos, every year

The condition was similar to 3.35 to 4.00 in the clip. Can see the beam we attached a rope to sticking out the port side about 10m above the water...

Boarded the ship shortly after the grounding with the intention of spending the night in a sleeping bag on deck. After drinking much beer decided to explore. So far all had been uneventfull. But at midnight I heard strange sounds comming from the engine room and saw smoke pouring out of the funnel. Aginst my better judgement I decided to decend into the boiler room. What I experienced that night is etched in my mind for eternity. As I entered the boiler room crimson flames shot out of the open boiler and demons from hell followed in quick sucession then a giant skeletal Henery envloped in flames demanded the engine run at full speed and as clouds of steam gushed from the engine it begain to run faster and faster as Henery laughed maniacally. Then he turned his evil red eyes to me and I woke up 58 years later as a homeless drug addicted man living on the streets of San Francisco. I then realized I had to duke a load and counden't find a bathroom so unloaded right on the sidewalk. Finely Henery was put to rest. Now that the curse has been lifted I have gone clean and plan to run for president.

It looks as if it is providing a home for fish, like a mini reef...Hopefully the ship will do some good after all, in that role.
