3:18 I am almost certain that that noise is artificially generated. Most Hybrid and EV cars have a small speaker to make noise when running on electric power and now it seems new trains have it too. The new Orange and Red like trains make a similar noise

I can say for sure it's definitely heard through the motors, I don't know nearly enough to know why they use the tones they use, but I always believed it to be a limitation of the switching IGBTs used to drive the motor. Higher frequencies near 10kHz are harder to hear, but generate much more heat. Lower frequencies around 1kHz are much easier on the electronics, and make noise. The changing pitch has something to do with synchronizing that carrier frequency with the rotation of the motor, if I remember correctly. Again I'm far from an expert. However, you do make an excellent point, I'm sure the engineers consider that making them too quiet poses a safety risk. Electric cars have much smaller motors and operate at generally higher frequencies for efficiency reasons, hence the speaker. I think the speaker sounds a little silly, I'd much rather have a loud motor! In any case, the noise is a characteristic of VVVF drives, something I always love learning more about. Sorry for the lengthy reply but I'm a sucker for engaging comments. Thanks for watching!

Philadelphia and Boston are one of the only two cities in the US that have all 5 modes of transport. Buses, Trackless Trolley Buses, Subway, Light Rail, and Commuter Rail. We use a fare payment structure similar to MBTA but its a Mastercard SEPTAKey card. media.nbcphiladelphia.com/images/1200*675/SEPTA+Key+Fare+Payment+System.jpg

www.septa.org/site/images/Regional-Rail-Web-2015-1400-rev11.jpg. Blue Line is The Market-Frankford Elevated Subway, Orange is the Broad Street Subway, Green are trolley and light rail lines, Purple is the Norristown High Speed Line (and I do mean high speed. it goes 70mph), Red is the PATCO High Speed Line and is not part of the SEPTA system. Everything else you see is Commuter. Everything East of Jefferson Station (it replaced Reading Terminal) are ex-Reading lines. Everything West of the station are ex-PRR/PC Lines. Conrail was contracted to run a few lines but they turned them over to SEPTA in 83. Everything you see is totally electrified. SEPTA has no Diesel commuter lines.
