As a Pagan Wicca/ Priestess, I must say that you're doing an excellent job rolling with people wanting to educate you. I had no problem with your ritual nor your explanationn - I quite enjoyed both of them. As for the history of Handfasting, there are various versions of history. I've read several books on the subject and they all vary. For example, some people are adamant that it's a pre-Christian ritual while others are adamant that it started in the middle ages (around 1100 CE). But people believe what they do quite passionately. You did well handling the critics.

With your client wanting to know about hand fasting n what it is.... it’s a Celtic/Pagan custom going back far earlier than Christian wedding ceremonies.
The couple are bound for the ceremony by cords they usually braid/weave themselves... with colors/fabrics they choose as significant to them (each color has different meanings)...
Couple tied together for duration of ceremony.... literally until they ‘consummate’ their union...(and as an added fun fact, this is how we ended up with wedding celebrations that includes a dinner.....hehe kept guests busy while the consummation was going on....
And as for the ‘cute little keepsake’ comment... I realize it wasn’t meant as offensive.... and I am happy to educate..... but the significance of the ribbons/colors et al... is quite huge.... as each one is a symbol of the quality or ‘thing’ each person is wanting/promising to bring to their relationship.
Typically, a couple who has been hand fasted, will reconvene after one year, for a permanent binding....
Hand fastings are an addition to a lot of weddings, but the absolute focus of those of us who are Pagan (myself)...Wiccan... and just plain magykal ;)

You are absolutely correct, I meant to offense in the way I aimed this video to be more of a quick guide I came up with really fast for a client of mine just to get a basic idea of the type of knot I usually tie when doing handfasting and the materials they could use. I agree, handfasting has a very meaningful part of the ceremony in the Pagan Ceremonies and has also now been adopted by more modern and or different religions. My goal has always been to adapt and personalize ceremonies and remain open-minded to all traditions and religions. Thanks again! :)
This Gaelic tradition dates back to 1790, and the couple were bound together for up to 12 months. After much anger from Scotish who objected to their fair maidens being bound to a man for a year, the duration was shortened. It's a shame that Christians are once again stealing pagan traditions and trying to make them their own. The crusaders still exist, smh.
Wow, I realized how ancient this tradition was but never knew how long they would bound them together. I personally would feel honored to have my traditions passed on in one way or another regardless of what kind of people they were.
