Hi Nigel , nice finds mate and same as you i have never found a love token with any decent detail on it , anyway still a good find pal well done and another good informative video , best wishes and ATB Rob .
Thanks Rob. I think it was part of the process that the image from and back was rubbed off. Maybe, love you so much I'm prepared to give up sixpence for you? Best wishes and happy hunting.
Well done, Nigel. That buckle certainly looks like a shoe buckle. You've got a good collecting of silver love tokens, i wouldn't have a clue how many I've got over 20+ yrs detecting, lol. They are a great find, tho. ❤
This is fascinating, Nigel. Can you explain to me how these coins become love tokens? Were they coins that were actually in circulation? I'm not familiar with this obviously very old practice. I'm just totally fascinated by these things that you are finding.
Hi Pat! Yes these are usually silver sixpences of William of Orange (William 111) sometimes Mary 6p or even copper coins (maybe the lady would think you were a cheap skate?!). The images of the king and the cross were supposed to be rubbed off and the coin made blank and then bent into the S shape, I think using their teeth. You then presented the token to your love in the hope that she would keep it and think of you. Maybe slip it into her hand after church? Or through a mutual friend?
Fantastic
