I've also been hearing that you need some skills in Python as well to extract or connect to data sources from applications. How important is that for a beginner position do you think?
Great tips. I followed these, and I landed a job with a comms company. If anyone is interested, I learned the following things: 1. Excel, including VBA. I was surprised how many companies wanted VBA skills. 2. I learned Power BI. 90% of companies in my region run an MS stack. 3. SQL. I didn't learn the ins-and-outs, just the parts for querying and modifying data.
Thanks for sharing. I'm currently in the Army and will be getting out in 2026. I just started an Excel course on Udemy and I'm on my second SQL course in Udemy. (Don't want to name-drop any Udemy instructors here since I don't have permission from this YT channel). I'm also planning on taking a Power BI course at some point. Two questions for you: 1. Did anyone ask you for a certification? 2. How good was your portfolio and do you mind sharing it?
@@ImmigrantB1hello friend! It depends on the entry level. Most company’s ask for excel+power bi+ SQL and then specifics regarding the company ( finances for a financial company, etc ). I’ve been working in the area for 3 years already
Thank you very much Adam. Your knowledge, generosity of spirit, the content itself, and of course the way you explain things are clear and concise. Your videos really keep me engaged and invested.
Great content! I got out of college this year and nothing of the real world tech needs to get a job was taught. Anyways, I got an internship as Software Engineer and was extended till the end of this year. Right now, I’m looking for any sort of income from a tech job and found this channel. I probably have 2 months before I’m out of savings so I’m using all the available time I have to study to study SQL and probably a course of AWS or get a coding job but just coding is not enough that’s why this is helpful
Thank you so much for this video, it’s very well explained! 😀🙏 I would like to ask a question since I am currently pursuing a graduate program in Business Analytics; is Business Intelligence a great career choice for atleast the next 5-10 years?
Very helpful! I would love to learn more about what a portfolio should actually look like. Do you have any resources about that? (Like should it be a website ? A powerpoint? Should it just be screenshots of dashboards built? How do you show SQL work in a portfolio?)
I agree totally with your last comment but, with respect, it still misses the point. SQL and Excel and totally different things and most data generated by a business is collected in SQL databases. The majority of the data a business possesses in Excel files has been exported from a SQL database to begin with. The whole video is about 7 steps to your first BI analyst job. To become a BI analyst you cannot not learn SQL, it's just not possible. You need both Excel and SQL which is why I said initially that Excel is definitely not more important than SQL.
Cool video man! I have a question if ya dont mind, what types of questions do you find yourself researching answers to when youre looking at a dataset? Ive got about 8 or 9 Tableau viz's, and the one thing i always struggle with is finding something type of question to answer with the data
Although BI does aim to answer specific questions through the insights gained by visualising data, its main focus is to help companies monitor their activity through constantly updating dashboards. I think you are talking more about data exploration which isn't really the subject of this video
Hey, I have a bi analyst interview coming up and I'm only self taught in sql and pbi with one project for each in my portfolio. How do I effectively speak to being a beginner but still show I put out the necessary effort to get up to speed? I have a portfolio Web that houses my projects. Thanks
I’d say that if you only have 2 projects in your portfolio, that’s probably not enough and the interviewer might ask why there aren’t more. You need to show that you are capable of dealing with different kinds of data. Why not connect to the sample google analytics data that’s freely available? support.google.com/analytics/answer/6367342?hl=en#zippy=%2Cin-this-article
Hi Sire. If you feel comfortable, do you mind giving us an updated. It’s been a couple of months since you’ve written this comment, and I’m interested to know how your experience has been! 💕
Oh hey guys, I actually didn't get the job unfortunately. They told me my interview was good and they appreciated my energy, however, someone was just better 😅
Thanks a lot for your valuable information, I am following your channel and I liked the video of the difference between data scientist and BI analyst, but I am inquiring about the role of data analyst? Could you please give us an example or explanation about it?
Your video is really useful for beginners! Could you please tell me about Python especially NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib and Seaborn? are these libraries useful for Business Intelligence Analyst? Do you have any views on it ?
For Business Intelligence you don't need to know Python because most BI projects don't call for the kinds of analysis that Python is built for. In BI you'll be mostly aggregating and visualising business data using SQL and BI tools that were built for BI. If you want to become a data scientist then you'll definitely need to study Python but that's a different channel 😁
Glad you like the content. Personally I would follow my advice from step 7. Subscribe to a learning platform like Skillshare or Udemy and take all the courses you want. If you want something that will give you certification at the end, try the Google Data Analytics course on Coursera (all links to these are in the description). Good luck!
I conduct data collection, cleanup, and analysis as a microbiologist, any advice on how to break into tech from more of a health role? I got the google analytics certificate, have experience in excel, google sheets, tableau, and SQL. How can I stand out against the the business/Econ applicants?
I think the fact that you already have the skills you do will put you ahead of a lot of candidates. What you would just need to show, other than a portfolio containing business-related projects, is your passion for working with business data and helping companies to grow and evolve using data.
MSc in business and psychology can support a business analyst career in Germany. Is there any eligibility for a business analyst career and what skills are required for getting a job on that? Is it possible to start a career as a business analyst in Germany with an MSc in business and psychology?
It wouldn’t hurt but you’d be better off learning something that isn’t vendor specific, more general learning. It also depends on what job you’re looking for. If it’s BI analyst then it wouldn’t be my priority.
Freelance would be more of a BI consultant. As a consultant you would be required to work with the client’s chosen platform or suggest one that best suits their needs. Good question. More often than not, data warehouses are just glorified sql relational databases so knowing how to create them and the tables in them is half the battle. But, depending on the size of the company, it’s often the job of the IT department to set up data warehouses. Leaving you to carry out your analyst tasks.
@@LearnBI thanks. Also a lot of roles in my area want technologies like SSIS and SSAS. I just like to ask, I know Data Warehouses are created in a way to be used for analysis and you analyse these DWs in SSAS. but can you analyse normal relational databases in SSAS? Do companies do that?
@@LearnBIok. do you have more videos on Data Warehousing concepts. I'm having a hard time understanding what topics like OLTP, OLAP, Tabular Model, Multidimensional Model are. This is my take but correct me if i'm wrong SSAS is used to analyse a data warehouse. A data warehouse is data that is stored from different sources, but it's stored differently like it has fact side and a dimension side. i don't know what those means. You can use a tabular model, which is built on relationships or you can use a multidimensional OLAP, which is built on dimensions. Tabular is a newer method.
It seems like you’re getting yourself overly confused with technical jargon and concepts. This is the kind of stuff you would need to know if you wanted to become an engineer or data architect but not an analyst.
Is Qliksense a good tool to master? I am currently working in a company that uses it but not sure whether to master it completely. Great video btw. Thanks
Yes, Qlik is one of the major players in the self-service BI space. Not as popular as Tableau or Power BI but that makes it more valuable as a skill IMO. Also, once you master one BI tool, you'll quickly be able to master others when called upon to use them.
I think the better question to ask is “why would any business want to employ me to handle their BI project?” Whether your services as a freelance will be perceived as valuable will depend on your experience and what you can offer. Do you have a project portfolio?
I wish I had time to mentor everyone who asked but I simply don’t have the time. That’s why I put my knowledge into easy to understand videos so that I can help the most amount of people. All I can tell you is to follow my advice for building a portfolio and creating social proof. Then create a service offer that is professional and attractive. You could try contacting small businesses in your area who maybe haven’t thought about BI and propose a dashboard package for their social media. That’s just one example, use your imagination 😉
Yes, this is a good suggestion. However, for your first BI ANALYST job, I'm not sure you'd be expected to have this skill. Because there are so many different ETL tools and they work in very different ways, you could never be sure that the company you're applying to would use the ETL you've learned. Best to stick to the basic, globally-recognised skills like SQL and Excel. There will always be learning on the job of the tools specific to the company you're hired by.
My job is hiring for a bi, but the job description says they need someone good at r and sas. Is there a big learning curve to learning these compared to SQL? Does it sound like they are looking for a data analyst and a bi together?
Very informative video. Adam can you please suggest which course is better for a beginner who is into self learning- Google BI professional certificate OR IBM BI foundation on Coursera? Or do you suggest any other couse from any other platform for beginners who wants to be job ready. Kindly help
