In 1994 or 1995, a friend and I got stuck in an elevator in Georgia at an ABA national. Anyway, we might have been in there for about 20 minutes or so and the elevator maintenance company were on their way. Outside of the elevator we heard some talking outside about how there were two kids stuck in the elevator. We heard someone say "let me see if I can get them out". So we hear some movement and the doors popped open and it was Gary Ellis who got us out!!!! Every time I saw him at nationals past that, he always remembered who I was and had a running joke.... I always knew he was full of class and an all around great guy, but as time went on, and i hot to know him, at least I passing, I got to have small chat with him on a somewhat personal level and I saw exactly why everyone spoke so highly of him..

That is awesome. I raced 17 Over Expert and B-Pro back in the day and was commenting on modern BMX where it is now like supercross than motocross. Old school BMX was A LOT more pedaling involved. This video shows the bridge to where it was half old school and had it new school.
These guys are who invented the current style of racing we see. I raced from 79 to 81 then got a KX125 to go race there engine version, but I have great memories of racing with the North East legends, Tim Russ, Hank Russ, John Schachel, Wayne McFarquer, Dollar Dave Dechert, even World Champion Kathy Schachel would line up to practice with the male experts. She was really fast.
    BMX, I miss it. 👍🏽👍🏻🥰😏

I went to high school with Gary Ellis in Puyallup, WA. Somewhere there's a hilarious movie showing the PHS custodian chasing Gary as he pedaled his BMX bike in and out of the school, with plenty of trick riding to feature his free-style abilities.

He use to ride at monee jumps in park forest il back in the late 80s just a little track built by all of us kids it was actually well built and thought out. Use to start on the edge of this creek was about a 8 ft hill That everyone would wait their turn and just watch the whoever ride gave you a good view of all the set of doubles was butter and a beautiful table top into a nice step up etc smooth rhythm section.... It been 24 years since I've been their and I still remember every inch of that track! I still on occasion dream about it. Thousands of hours were spent up their riding with all of my friends what a great time in my life. And watching this video just took me right back. He would appear up their from time to time and we absolutely worshipped this man and he could not have been nicer to all of us. What a class act and a great guy! He would sit for hours and talk with us.. Hanging out with your idol was a absolutely amazing experience.Thanx For the memories

I've been on a quest to find each year from the year i quit racing from 1988 to 2000 of some decent race coverage .. this did not disappoint. From Kuwahara ,Huffy, to GT .. Gary Ellis last race was like a walk off HR .. 💯💯💯💯 Never knew Veltman turned pro or Hadan . So essentially Gary Ellis raced nearly 20 years in the pro ranks? The GOAT 🐐 title may be appropriate.

Hayden just seemed to give up. I didn't realize he was still racing in 98. Back in the mid eighties is when I last raced him in azusa. He beat me on a borrowed bike when he got a flat on his DB. I hear he has bigger fish to fry now. I was at whittier narrows a couple years back and I thought I saw him but it was some cat named "Dick burger" aka something Morris. That guy is fast too.
