Finally! This was the review I was waiting for! I’m really looking forward to how they adapt Soren and how deep Cortana’s role will be with Chief.
I’ll have to rewatch the scene, but perhaps in the stress of the situation and lack of training, the Innies were just missing most of their shots with the machine guns. But then in Chief’s hands, he has the training to compensate for spread and recoil.
I actually like that they are going back to rogue chief. It was a plot point in all the leadup to 5 that just collapsed. There is potential, so I am looking forward to a better rendition (hopefully)
@@gabnel1000 well we don't get Halo stories very often let alone a show lol How they are approaching the story is fresh because the games 5 specifically, tried this rogue chief thing and it sucked but works for me here. It's also fresh to see a cinematic take on the lore before the games.
I like how you take a page out of red vs blue's book, and instead of showing your face, or just being some random voice, you give a character via halo model.
@@darienford860 whats wrong with an AK47 in 2552? its a truly reliable weapon system even though by that point it would be a vintage rifle in a Hunters room with a fireplace and Bear rug
@@darienford860 so the Master Chief uses projectile weapons all the time. It’s really hard to believe that a rebel group fighting against the UNSC is gonna have one of the oldest model projectile weapons? There’s not a lot of differences in functionality of the AR and BR. They simply have a digital readout of ammo left and use armor piercing rounds to be more effective against the convenant. If I relied on reviews to tell me if I like something, I would have missed a lot of shows and movies that I enjoyed. We see elites, a banshee, a phantom, plasma rifle, plasma pistol, AR, DMR, proper Spartan HUD, pelican, warthog, high charity, a covenant profit, Halsey, Keys (both of them), reach, a Halsey flash clone that is used to creat Cortana, we see that the Spartans really answer to Halsey, and forerunner tech to name a few. So we saw a lot. Still haven’t seen cortana or an actual Halo. Many species of the covenant left to see as well.
The Halsey's computer website added a lot of extra lore to the show, and I love it. Such as Harvest being glasses in 2040 in this canon, and Chief being 25 in the show.
gotta love that sly reference to Mass Effect. wonder if they'll do the same for other sci-fi franchises, like Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, etc etc. though i think they slid Star Wars in- you said Soren-066 was the first Rogue Spartan. think thats a reference to Order 66?
Was looking forward to this. I enjoyed that episode! And I'm actually interested to learn more about the politics and relationships in this timeline. I'm optimistic about the story, but yea either way it's just a fun romp through halo-ish that can be best enjoyed by not being too serious.
I know it's pretty obvious but i notice that silver team is an interpretation of blue team, somebody heard the active camo sound? And the fact the insurrectionists believed the covenant was UNSC propaganda? i heard that in the core canon some insurrectionist believed the covenant was fake
The alternative tech changes are a struggle to get used to. I found it uncanny that the spartan shields have no visible refresh and the elite shields have a much less clear break; elements that aren't needed outside gameplay, but they had a nice visual aesthetic in the games that are lost in the show. I also wish they handled the humanizing of chief better. You can have the scene play the same, just don't let the audience see his face yet and it's the best of both worlds
Despite how little sense the elite flipping the truck over might make, I kind of love it that sort of same way I love crazy ragdolls. And when seen sped up, it just looks like the elite is minding its own business, turns to the truck, and goes "fuck you in particular".
Going in, I was fully expecting to hate this series. I was expecting a 3/10 at best. Instead, I ended up loving it. It’s obviously a Mandalorian knock-off, but it still has a heart and soul of its own. You can really feel the love that went into this. And I LOVED John taking his helmet off. At first I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was seeing something I shouldn’t be, but Pablo Schreiber gave John these really kind eyes that 100% sold me on it. I’m really happy with how they handled it. Overall, I’d give the pilot an 8/10. I’m really pleasantly surprised with what they did here and can’t wait to see where they go from here.
Apparently thats where it ends. All of the press reviews of Epsiode 2 say they completely ditch the direction of Ep 1 and Ep2 is where the writers want to tell THEIR story and it becomes a complete misdirection of fans of a loved IP.
@@Crusina I was under the impression it started filming in 2020, or was it earlier? If I was wrong, I take back what I said about it being a knock-off. Instead, I think it’d be better to simply say great minds think alike.
Custom playing cards for live action shows are always a nice touch. I just hate that some shows don't usually sell the design but that is a pet peeve of my own.
Im wondering, since the writers said they aren't basing the story on the games, does that mean we won't see events like, the fall of reach, destruction of first Halo ring, flood outbreak, the arbiter, and the ark?
They didn't say they aren't pulling from the games, just that, during a particular "Halo bootcamp" during pre-production, they didn't look at the games themselves, but focused on the lore and characters (though they did also play the games during pre-production). At the moment, I suspect season 2 will follow a version of Halo CE.
It’s going to reveal that Cortana somehow in the main continuity wiped all civilization away with activating forerunner tech and she continues to observe how the librarian did as humans and covenant still end up evolving the exact same way but she intervenes sparingly , hoping that John has a normal life and influences Halsey’s flash cloning system so she can transfer her consciousness into a human body eventually but sees that John has become a Spartan yet again
17:44 something else to note is that the voice that says this line is the same voice that is often heard talking over the intercom when exploring the citadel in Mass Effect 3
Another "inconstancy" when Halsey is talking to Parangosky, Parangosky states that the Spartans were unable to prevent the deaths of all the 100-150 insurrectionists and that it would be used as leverage to get her shut down... this confused me because why would the UNSC suddenly care about the rebels when the Spartans were designed specifically to combat them...i get that they are trying to add that political drama a bit to show the higher powers working behind the scenes, but i feel if all they referenced for this show was Halo Reach, 4 and 5.. they wont really know to much of any of Oni's/UNSC politics or ways of thinking. The only thing i could assume was that the UNSC were trying to specifically save them from being killed because they wanted them to join the UNSC against the Elites (which confuses me why they went the route of Qwan refusing to help them in stopping the war to fight the covenants considering her entire "home" just got destroyed by the Covenant but oh well the UNSC need to be depicted as bad, even if they really did do some bad things) however the only people even seem to actually care for her survival is the Keyes family. Its really inconsistent for them to complain about the prevention of their deaths while just trying to execute one of them anyway. Also another side note, this is Reach after all...near the fall of it. Why only Silver team was deployed during a base wide alert and no other Spartans are seen anywhere really struck me as odd and makes me think that we wont see any more spartans that much, or they are holding them off till they can recreate the whole... one spartan team chasing the rogue spartan team.. but at this point idk, lore doesnt matter to them that much so they just "get a hall pass" to do whatever they want even if it doesn't make sense
They let civilians get turned into mulch that were expressly noncombatants. Not every baby there was an Innie, a.d ONI could just lie and say they were a small farming post. That kind of blemish on a report could get them defunded.
Miranda Keyes position as a “Scientist” I don’t think should be a breaker. IRL Naval officers take a twisting road to positions of command often rotating from sea to staff duties. Her position in the TV series is such that she could easily be in a staff position until her next rotation gets her a ship. Though I have seen people complaining about the visible ages of people like Halsey with human life expectancy increasing every generation it’s entirely possible that by the 2550’s humanity medical and general security at least in the more established colonies and homeworld are such that older individuals don’t age as fast as they do today.
With the amazing designs, plenty or lore and references along with great fight scenes I would definitely like them to try and do a Mass Effect Show as they've done a good job with Halo.
At lot of the rebels are using intermediate powered rounds (7.62X39, 5.56) compared to the UNSC's full powered rifle cartridges. The MA5 is putting out anywhere from 25% to 50% more energy at the muzzle compared to the AKs and AUGs of the insurrectionists. It was still funny that the minigun didn't start being useful till the Chief picked it up.
You know for the statement that some of the show runners did not play the game, they sure did nail a lot of things from the game. Overall I enjoyed it and damn the first 10 minutes was brutal. BTW where the grunts at?
Turns out that quote about not talking about the games was taken out of context. The showrunners played the games plenty, then went to a "Halo bootcamp" where they focused solely on the lore and character (ie, didn't talk about Halo as games)
It's nice to see a lot of positiveness towards the show.... I can't tell you how many times people have harassed me online saying how "shit" the show is when they haven't even given it a chance. And when a big UA-cam channel like halo Canon says some positives views toward the show. Makes me hyped to watch it. I understand this show has its downsides. But man I can't tell you how much shit I get for saying the positive things about it online... people really do get butthurt when spewed with facts and truth.... it hurts to see halo fans act in such a way.... that makes me think those that hate this show aren't really fans of the series.... I enjoy it for what it is.... and now how it is... it's sad man. People really get angry when they get what they want. But not exact:(
I honestly love the Sangheili’s armor design in this. It’s kinda like their version of medieval knight armor, to a degree. I wouldn’t be surprised if 343 brings that design into the core lore as Pre-Covenant Sangheili armor that could either a) be used by The Banished, but heavily modified to meet modern standards, or b) be used by Arbiter Thel ‘Vadam’s forces as sets for his own personal bodyguards. I mean, if u look at Thel’s Kaidon armor from Halo 5 and the Silver Timeline armor, they kinda look similar. But tbh, I just wanna see it canonized somehow. The set looks THAT good. Also, I love the fact that the Sangheili are as strong and burly as they were in Halo Wars. I honestly thought they looked badass that way.
I like to look at this show like I look at comic book media you have the movie timeline, video games timeline, the comics timeline and so on I don't see why we can't have halo the video game universe and then the halo show verse it makes total sense to not limit the writers creativity and so we don't just see exactly what we saw in halo 3 or read in one of the books. Plus with it being its own timeline if there is something some one doesn't like it won't harm the games canon I don't see why the show being its own timeline is so bad I would love maybe an animated series that is canon just that you should judge the show for what it is and not what it isnt.
Literally minus the bad cgi, I enjoyed the first episode, especially 2nd half of it. I love and played the games and this is definitely a different story, but I'm being fair and not knit picking everything, and honestly will watch it as it goes. My interest is peaked. So far 7/10 for the first episode
Hmm, I kinda disagree with your tier definition. That tier system refers to civilizations. To me I thought it's tier represented it's importance. Like how China has tier 1 cities which are it's biggest and most important cities and lower tier cities which are more regional cities. Though we'll have to wait and see if they explain their tier rankings to be sure
I don't get the hate. It's a non Canon story which was explained early on in the shows development. And even parts of the Halo Canon contradicts itself at times. I just find that this fanbase just likes to hate on Halo for the sake of it now and it's been like that for nearly a decade. The first 15 minutes of this show was awesome. The combat was spot on. The gore? I didn't expect that. Other then the bad cgi: I was all in after the first shot was fired. Halo was gritty and brutal. Which when the Flood eventually shows up. It's going to need that. My prediction: What was found was an "index" like object that will lead Chief and the UNSC to a Halo ring. And it'll be race to beat the Covenant to Halo. Season ends with the Fall of Reach, Pillar of Autumn heading to Halo.
I have worked on this series for nearly four years. I am SO happy you have managed to find and appreciate these details. Modified Condor with slip space drive was my favorite. This is exactly the case. We had a guy like you from 343i with us the whole time. Someone with a shocking capacity for knowledge of the franchise. I am really saddened that the fans have been so dismissive of our adherence to the lore when you so rightfully are discovering how meticulous we were being. There’s so much more coming, and I’m really excited to see your response. You caught a lot. Well done.
"We had a guy like you from 343i with us the whole time" Ha. We could make a novel of his emails. There's a group that was always going to be dismissive regardless. Most people seem to like it over all both look and story.
@@Connor8609 Thanks. The thing is I don't think mass drivers work like that though. All its meant to do is accelerate objects. No pulse is shot along with the projectile. All of this happens in the gun. I've never seen it behave like this in the game or any literature.
While there are aspects that I do like a lot, overall this was a huge letdown for me. Half of the CGI seemed unfinished and didn't have any feel of weight. The Spartans seemed awkward as hell and Chiefs face and voice were just sad. I was happier with Forward Unto Dawn and would have been much happier with a season of hour long Blur cutscenes.
Personally, this is just a personal preference!!! I would have liked Master Chief face unknown as that is what keeps part of the game lore at least for me alluring. In the game not knowing how Chief looks makes me want to put myself in Chiefs boots for the game experience. I don’t know its just a personal thing, its doesn’t make or break the show though.
@@HaloCanon Actually, taking a look at comparisons, the Stalwart is thin, the Paris is badass, and the Charon has boxy side engines. Looking here it is a Charon class because those big side engines on it look like rectangles, whereas the others actually bend inwards on the top and bottom. It's a Charon class.
@@thefiresworddragon927 To me it looks closest to a Stalwart, particularly the upgraded version in H2A, but I also see elements that remind me of the newer Mulsanne-class Frigates from Halo Infinite. But until it's confirmed or we get a better image, I'd rather keep things vague.
I believe the disregard of protocols and tactics that are already stablished in the canon are kind of annoying for me, but welp. those concepts are not for everyone.
I enjoyed the episode especially the Spartans entrance. I'm glad you mentioned about the 50 caliber machine gun not doing anything until Chief used it though!
That unknown frigate in the background at around 13:35 looks extremely similar to the Stalwart-Class, if not the same. I wonder if it's just their take on it. I love seeing the UNSC ships being shown off so far!
I think this was framed more as an unfortunate coincidence rather than as something that would support a hard anti-drug use stance by the creators of the show
My joke reason why the machine gun was more effective when Chief had it is he switched out the ammunition to Plot-Armor Piercing rounds.

But so far it's been all this way overblown crap by people who don't grasp the concept of this being separate from the core timeline and that's just going to push the writers to do their own thing if even this can't be enjoyed.
You know people are being irrational when 24 hours after the first episode comes out, people are saying the show will be terrible just because of some bad CGI, somebody showing his face, and a few barely noticeable editing mistakes.
@@Meep-0424 Yep, and now they're moving the goal posts by saying "well episode 1 wasn't too bad, but i HEARD the second episode is way worse". They'll just keep saying that until they've watched the whole season, then when it's finished it'll change to "well season 1 wasn't too bad but i heard season 2 is going to go even more against the Halo lore!!" It's like stfu already
I’ve been through more than one adaptation of something (Dune, Ender’s Game, and a Wings of Fire show upcoming) and I just want an adaptation for something that I like to not be so divided. I just hope people will stop trying to watch something looking for every little thing to complain about.
Love how AK-47s still exist in 2552
Finally! This was the review I was waiting for! I’m very pleased with this “silver timeline” so far, and how they’ve combine many event elements from core canon in order to make this new “silver timeline” truly unique.
My immersion was ruined by the ~2001 Chevy Tahoes in 2552 outer rim

I actually like that they are going back to rogue chief. It was a plot point in all the leadup to 5 that just collapsed. There is potential, so I am looking forward to a better rendition (hopefully)
@@gabnel1000 well we don't get Halo stories very often let alone a show lol How they are approaching the story is fresh because the games 5 specifically, tried this rogue chief thing and it sucked but works for me here. It's also fresh to see a cinematic take on the lore before the games.
I feel like this show is gonna end with them discovering the Halo and season 2 would be the actual events of Halo 1
Loved the Elite body blocking the car without hesitation, demonstrates their size and strength well.
I like how you take a page out of red vs blue's book, and instead of showing your face, or just being some random voice, you give a character via halo model.
I truly appreciate your review man... For people like me who have no access to it in our countries, its the only way to keep us up to date.
14:53 this spade-mounted machine gun might have been a different model to the ones that were used at the gates. Or it was using different ammunition
I think it might have been
It's litterly the excat same one as the one the Innie leader is on. You litterly see him get thrown off of it
Yes that’s the next series I really want to see as a show!! Mass Effect!!!!
It's a solid pilot episode for the story. It introduced us to the Halo world/universe and gave a lot that it can flesh out going forward.
No it's not buddy and the reviews show it's not. AK-47s in the year 2552 🤔. This was only one episode it didn't show much at all
@@darienford860 whats wrong with an AK47 in 2552? its a truly reliable weapon system even though by that point it would be a vintage rifle in a Hunters room with a fireplace and Bear rug
But UNSC has been shown a villain here knowing that john killed quan's mother made me feel bad just because he was following order without questioning
The Halsey's computer website added a lot of extra lore to the show, and I love it.
Such as Harvest being glasses in 2040 in this canon, and Chief being 25 in the show.
6:24 elites saying hello to the neighborhood
Halo Canon, Halo Follower, Installation 00, Hidden Xperia all my favorites
I liked the way the Spartans moved in combat, they move quickly, almost unnaturally
Still wish they were faster
Thanks again! I enjoyed the first episode. Yes! there were bits and pieces that seemed off but overall it was enjoyable to watch.
The graphic violence surprised the fuck out of me and I was unaware that Halsey was Mirandas mother, in canon.
gotta love that sly reference to Mass Effect. wonder if they'll do the same for other sci-fi franchises, like Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, etc etc. though i think they slid Star Wars in- you said Soren-066 was the first Rogue Spartan. think thats a reference to Order 66?
Was looking forward to this. I enjoyed that episode! And I'm actually interested to learn more about the politics and relationships in this timeline. I'm optimistic about the story, but yea either way it's just a fun romp through halo-ish that can be best enjoyed by not being too serious.
so yeah, the prophet of mercy does look fantastic. he's still missing his crown that the rest of the trio normally have on.
@@Tazandd and the other episodes...?
Like cmon you can't tell a different story if you don't do that sort of thing.
How can it be a mandalorian knock off if it was being developed and acted at the same time before the mandalorian came out...

18:22 I noticed that Chief's armor is powered by battery, rather than fusion reactor. I wonder if this will be significant.
I hope The Prophets are using the Ava Max/ Lady Gaga look alike as a puppet and they end up disposing of her in some sort of gruesome manner.
I honestly really dug the first episode. Im cautiously optimistic, but I really enjoyed the first episode.
I did not initially hear that mass effect Easter egg. Good catch, wonder who put that there
Custom playing cards for live action shows are always a nice touch. I just hate that some shows don't usually sell the design but that is a pet peeve of my own.
18:45 That's actually Sergeant Johnson.
@@HaloCanon awesome thanks for clarifying!
Ye the news about them not looking at games is massively taken out of context.
@@TheWeeJet To absolutely no ones surprise
@@TheWeeJet no it wasn't.

Skip to 18:29 and listened to the background voices
Pretty cool!
I've seen a lot of hate on the show but I absolutely love it
I think the chief has better armour than the other spartans, and better than the elites, too. It seems to regenerate much faster.
With the amazing designs, plenty or lore and references along with great fight scenes I would definitely like them to try and do a Mass Effect Show as they've done a good job with Halo.
I'm thinking the silver timeline will be the old canon about humans being the forerunners.
Plus the presumably hand made powder charge behind the AK rounds whereas the ARs have Misrahs patented future cordite behind it too
I like how they made the plasma weapons more irl accurate

My only real complaint is Chief. I can’t quite explain what and why. But, just, after taking the helmet off, and everything after that. Idk
The artifact they found I wonder if it’s a reference to the sigma octanis artifact from the halo fall of reach novel?
They should’ve consulted you when making this show.
Im loving this restarted lore of the power rangers universe dude!!
I feel like they are going to go the route the Stargate went with the ATA Gene being needed to activate technology left behind by the Ancients.
It's in line with Halo's existing lore, too.
Literally minus the bad cgi, I enjoyed the first episode, especially 2nd half of it. I love and played the games and this is definitely a different story, but I'm being fair and not knit picking everything, and honestly will watch it as it goes. My interest is peaked. So far 7/10 for the first episode
15:34 What franchise was that reference from?

Overall, was pleasantly surprised by the presentation of the show - but the music is sorely lacking.
To me this show is lore breaking change my mind.

Imagine how pissed the original designers are rn lmfaoo!
It's how it should be but these ppl keep proving they don't care about fans or halo
I thought the Halbert class were frigates
13:35 That's... a Paris-class frigate. A standard Halo UNSC frigate.
How...
It could be a Paris-class, but it's hard to tell, especially since Paris, Charon, and Stalwart-class frigates all have very similar profiles.
And there are still people who think that the production had no contact with the games... They took the speech completely out of context.
