Beachcombing - Escape Pod

- We rolled up on an empty escape pod this last week but it still had a bunch of supplies in it. Even stranger is that there was a bunch of survival gear located about a quarter mile south of the life raft. Watch this episode of Beachcombing to see what Jace Tunnell found in the pod and down the beach. Let us know if you have ever found a life raft and what was in it. I'd wanna keep the mini life boat to use it as a mini bike camper and boat.
Great idea! Jace
Probably get 8 Mexicans in side of it.
Haha I was thinking thr same thing
Way too heavy. These pods are built to withstand serious impact with the sinking vessel and/or rocky shorelines and are weighted on the bottom to be self-righting.

Vessel finder shows the Christian G is a "fishing vessel" (though it looks like a motor yacht} at Gulf of Mexico reported 221 days ago by AIS.
The tide had washed away the droid tracks.

I was involved in COASST (Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team) for a few years when I lived in Olympia, Washington. I did the marine debris part of the surveys. I just found your videos and they remind me of how much I miss doing that. I wish I was closer. I would like to start up a COASST program here in Texas.
Well hello from everyone still here in Olympia/ Lacey..... lol
Awesome! Thank you! Jace

It has so much thought in its design, even the little step tubing fitted to the door.fascinating.
100% agree. :) Jace
I haven't done much beachcombing by the ocean, but I've done a lot around fresh water lakes. There's a lake near me that's a popular hunting spot for duck hunters, because it has places along the shore that hunters without boats can walk to and set up. I usually walk the north shore that's pretty barren because it's low and floods easily. But, I usually find lots of duck decoys that came untied and floated out of reach of those hunters without boats. I also find quite a few floating fishing lures washed up there as well. Of course there's always an occasional life preserver, boat cushion or Styrofoam life ring. I've even found a few boats washed up there after a bad storm and was able to return them to their owners through the Parks and Wildlife department.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing! Jace
Really enjoyed this thanks for sharing it with us
thank you! Jace
The way radar reflectors work is pretty neat
Imagine a 2D scenario where you have 2 orthogonal mirrors and a laser. Since angle of incidence = angle of reflection, and the two mirrors are 90° from each other, the laser leaves this reflector with the exact angle it entered it.
If you add a 3rd orthogonal mirror, the reflector now works for any incident angle in 3D space. Assuming theres enough signal to bounce off atleast 2 mirrors, you'll reflect that signal directly back to whatever generated it.
The end result is that the radar operator sees a much louder return than what your vessel would naturally reflect.
A very strange but interesting find,we were wondering weather it fell off a boat by accident or with people inside.
Thanks for breaking down the contents ❤🙋❤️
thank you! Jace
Probly used to smuggle drugs or people being that it’s near mexico
Did you get ahold of the Coast Guard? Wondering if the owner was found, or was it from a boat that sank.
The owner of the boat reached out to us and his boat sank but they were rescued. The pod was never used but they are trying to get it back.
👍 glad to hear everyones ok
@@HarteResearch I think you might want to pin that question and your answer -- it is at least part of what Paul Harvey used to call: "The Rest of The Story!"
EDIT: I would like to hear if the vessel owner was able to recover the pod. Moreover, what might the difficulties have been; just the physical logistics, or bureaucratic hurdles?
@@HarteResearch So why did you steal from it?
Nice work with putting the barrel on the beach to cover yourself for our pleasure, I love it

Same here. Cheers!
That's a lifeboat & contents from a larger vessel, typically a fishboat. Definitely the coast guard need to know. It could have been washed off the top of the vessel, or released when the vessel sank.
You are exactly right, it was released when the vessel sank and all the passengers were rescued from another boat that was nearby.
The reflectors are radar reflectors so radar has a good return and can see you. Sailboats have them because they have a very low radar return. Those things light up on a screen. They put them on weather balloons too.
Excellent info! Thank you! Jace
Not just sailboats, but all ocean going vessels. This one is the cheapest and most common. On a powerboat they're generally a 20" plastic tube of 4" or more diameter with an internal structure of metal fins angled in multiple directions.
You should see if you can send one of the SOS food packs to SteveMRE1989. He enjoys odd MRE/preserved foods and will look up the history on the items. Great channel and thanks for all the videos.
When you took that bite I thought 'Noooo!' It looks like cannabis resin. I beachcomb on Chesil beach, Dorset, England UK and we had a load washed up recently. Excellent footage...thank you.
The reflector thing reflets both light and radio waves back at 90 deg no matter where it comes from. You see them on boats so it's easier to get a location on it... I think!
It's a radar reflector, designed to increase the radar cross section of any small vessel, especially GRP or plastic vessels which naturally absorb a large portion of the radar signal.
Wrong about reflecting "back at 90 deg(rees)". It is designed to reflect in all directions, but most importantly 180 degrees back towards a radar transponder/receiver. The silver metallic coating is to reflect radar, not light. The greyish silver 3"x18" rectangles on the sides and top of the pod are for reflecting light.
Cool finds!
thanks! Jace
A quick search turns up that boat is a fishing boat/ yacht. Which is strange. And it hasn’t turn on its ais for 103 days and last time it was at palacitos Texas
Very interesting! Thanks for this info! Jace
Great find intriguing as to why its on the beach
Thanks! Jace
And you just left it? That’s a $10,000 life boat.
Definitely worth salvaging
The stainless steel hemisphere on the cabin top is a solar ventilator which allows air in while keeping water out. It's got an electric fan built into it.
RL6 is lighting system and battery, not a flashlight but actual lights. providing both internal lighting power, and external lights.
It tells on the package what the Food Bars are. 4:41 Better than raw fish with parasites. Great find. Read up on Survival skills. That was a Strobe Light you were holding.
That little survival pod and the contents cost a small fortune when it was bought as safety equipment for its mothership. No wonder the company/fisherman wanted it back even though he lost his boat. You could claim it as salvage. The insurance company could try to contest the claim, since they probably paid off the fisherman already and now "own" the boat, equipment, etc. loss claim they paid off for. Doesn't seem to me like the company/owner of the mothership has much of a legal claim to it at all. But, even if he gets it back, getting it re-equipped, tested and recertified ain't gonna' be very cheap either. Great beach find, though. I wonder who got there before you and grabbed the stuff you found on the beach? Moreso, I wonder why they collected it only to leave it where you found it.
They abandoned it because it was heavy to carry,
Those sure look like pemmican bars. Anyone know where it went down? I'm curious how far the pod drifted.
What a crazy find
I looked up the ship the life pod was from .Sailing under American flag..Looks like a big yacht yet says its a fishing vessel..Cool find!!
Thanks for this info! The family that owns the boat contacted me and it was a large shrimp boat that sunk in the Gulf of Mexico. They are trying to recover the pod. Thanks again. Jace
This was very interesting. I've never been to Corpus - despite living all my life in Austin - but that escape pod was really neat, not sure I'd want to use it. It would be interesting to have a fiction story with one.
Awesome! Thanks! Jace
Totally mesmerizing and Totally far out. I want the mirror.
that mirror was cool! Jace
I've tried to use one before when I broke some bones on a solo canoe trip. It didn't work. Conditions have to be ideal for them to be effective, ie lots of sun and with the rescuing vessel in the right position at the right distance. Good luck with that. The whistle is what worked, barely.
Yikes could you imagine being in that thing with three other people? Cool find!
lol. No, can't imagine being that close to anyone. lol Jace
You'd want to break out the anti-nausea pills straight away.
I gotta take a crap. Nobody look now. Plug your noses also.......
Beats getting dead by drowning.
@@John-qb8vd Apparently people have with this thing. It's the smallest in the world and has some "problems", according to sources.
I looked up on marine traffic. The boat is a fishing vessel out of port Lavaca.

I could see combining this with a tube frame and some wheelchair wheels to make an awesome little bike camper.
I sell similar emergency ration blocks mainly for disaster relief and liferaft/sailing applications but sales went through the roof when covid hit. A lot of preppers stock up on them as they have a 20+yr bb and all the vits and mins to sustain life long term. They’re almost better as a porridge almost.
Wow! That's awesome!!! Jace
I bet people stocked up on the toilet paper first and foremost... BECAUSE THEY WERE PROGRAMMED TO......
These have 5 yr life.
Hello, Im SORRY, ARE YOU RELATED TO MR TOMMY LEE JONES!! WOW.!
great video! Thanks again!!
What's the big green thing behind you at 5:05? I'm guessing it's a port hand navigational aid with a broken chain.
The tug they'll send to pick up the buoy could easily pick up the life raft on behalf of the owners.
She sank and all three crew members on board were saved ona similar fishing boat called the Hillary , they never entered fhe rescue boat. It likely was freed from deck when they took on water that’s why it washed up on shore . As far as towing it or taking it it prob has 1000 pound of lead ballast to keep 4 persons up right prob more . It’s also lodged in sand . And marked by coast guard so re sell is silly . Cheers awsome find !!
Awesome! Thanks for this info!!! Jace
Any clue where it went down? I wonder how far the pod drifted.
A boat with the same name was registered in Texas for sale. It was a $3.3 million yacht.
Wow! This was from off a shrimp boat that sank in the Gulf of Mexico. The owner contacted me. Jace
Different vessel.
Nice ! What kind and model ebike is that?

Totally agree. lol Jace
The survival bars aren’t bad. Wouldn’t want to eat them day after day but could if I had to. We keep a supply in our go bag.
agree. it was nice and sweet, but maybe only for a day or two. lol Jace
Do you call the coast guard and let them know?
The life raft had the name of the vessel it came off of. It might have just come loose, but if the ship had an emergency, it could be important for the coast guard to know and track where the raft as well as all of the other stuff washed up.
I’m only part way through your video and so you might have mentioned this, but did you contact the Coast Guard or your nearest port authorities?
The owners contacted us and we gave them the Lat. Long. Hope they can pick it up. Jace
Did you contact the Coast Guard of the find? Wondering if they would contact the owner in Texas?
I talked to the family that owned it and gave them the coordinates. Nobody was in it and their shrimp boat sank. They are going to try and recover the pod. Thanks! Jace

Did you notify the Coast Guard to see if any ships reported being in destress?
The family of the shrimp boat contacted me from where the pod came from. I gave them the coordinates and they are going to try and recover the pod. Nobody used the pod. Thanks! Jace
What country did this wash up in?
United States off the coast of Texas. We contacted the owner.

Port Lavaca, huh?

Lmao missed opportunity
Are you one of those people 🤔who places a bucket of water in position to spill on the next person opening a door? 🤣
4 persons in that little thingy ? with no seats ? lol ...quite the headbanging if the sea is rough. but better than drowning i guess xD
I would salvage that a great boat for the uk canals
I'd hate to have to share that little pod with 3 other people for any length of time.
how do you number 1 and 2 on that lifeboat???
That is what the step is for. You 'go' in the water.
It most definitely can be repurposed for something I'm sure. Maybe a sall camper for a motorcycle or trike. The food is based in the hardtack idea. You definitely want to soak it in a little water before you start trying to break your teeth. 😂 The radar reflector is to give your little kife line a bigger radar cross section to pick up by the surface ships & aircraft.
Mount it on a bike trailer?

It was unused. Fell off a boat. Too much evidence supporting the fact. Cool find!

Lifeboat brick food..is food that doesn’t make you thirsty
Ah! Great to know! Jace
The biscuit are made so they dont induce thirst,so they are very bland!
They were quite tasty! lol Jace
Enter head first?? I can't even..
No kidding, I'd have to wiggle my fat in feet first. And be last in/closest to the door to keep claustrophobia in check.
The door swings down and becomes a ladder/step to climb in once it’s in the water. When you’re in the middle of the ocean that hole doesn’t seem so small 😂
The reason they say to enter head first is because these rafts are very tippy. Head first keeps your weight low.
I want one.

Oh lol
Hi I'm james
They spelled Port Lavaca wrong. That must be the Mexican way to spell it.
In a coast guard inspection, that would cost them a big fine. There must be a Port Lavacia somewhere in Texas
@@UguysRnuts I searched and there is not one in the world. They probably bought the pod in Mexico and where they got it only God knows.
@@tree5013 The only explanation I can think of is that it was a spelling mistake. Not sure why you think the raft was acquired in Mexico? "La Vaca" is Spanish for "the cow" and is a popular Mexican song.
@@UguysRnuts Because "ica" is a common way to spell the endings of many words in Spanish. Not many Americans would do that. No matter what I hope the owners of the boat had more pride in their boat than to have such a big mistake on their boat. As a captain, I wouldn't have allowed that even if people couldn't see it. It shows that you don't care about the big things let alone the fine details of the job. Come to think of it, it probably wasn't properly secured and that is why it fell off the boat in the first place.
@@tree5013 Funny thing; Port Lavaca has many businesses with the port in the name and none of them spell it with an 'i'. I agree with your assessment of the level of seamanship/literacy aboard the 'Christian G'. It floated free when the vessel sank, according to witnesses.
You could have left that stuff for a homeless person or veteran, Also, that "life pod" could house a single homeless person or veteran trying to take shelter from the elements.
Great idea! I left everything there, so maybe a homeless person will find it. Unfortunately, the pod is about 5 miles up the beach on private land with no access except walking, so I'm not sure how they would find it, but I love that idea! Thanks! Jace
Terrible idea. You don't help the homeless by enabling them. Getting them into services that will stop the addiction, get them working and providing for themselves again is what works.
@@kaihammond6984 Yes I agree.
Keep looking, I’m sure the bricks of cocaine are close by
