If you are new here, please know that Drake is a pillar of championing positivity, diversity, and social awareness when it comes to comics and other related properties, and that is very rare here on youtube because negativity tends to stand out much much more. So if he is saying something "negative" in regards to this character, its is done from a place actual critique and analysis of the whole of the character.

Us marvel fans were actually glad that he finally left. I only feel bad for DC readers because Bendis has sorta been phoning it in for a while. You can literally mark when Bendis lost interest in a book and is just writing for the paycheck on a book.

Don't watch it, it is worse than the comic, which was mediocre at best

Judging by the cover of the first issue I thought Naomi was going to be about her solving mysteries. That sounds really cool and different from the standard superhero stuff. But unfortunately I guess that’s not the case.

Bendis says he's pro-diversity and then tries to have a comic about a woman of color written by three dudes, two of which are white

Remember, NONE of the money made from this helped black creators

The Superman thing really hurt me when it happened. Superman had always been a superhero that went over my head and I barely read his comics. But that run with Jon really got to me, really inspired me to see why others liked Superman so much, and I started to consume other stories that people recommended to me. That single run completely changed how I viewed a character, to the point of making him one of my favorites, and seeing it all thrown away really put me off DC for a while.

When I first heard Naomi was getting a show, my immediate reaction was “why?” I don’t remember fans campaigning for her to get her time in the spotlight and frankly, I completely forgot about her until she was brought in for Bendis’s Justice League run.

I am very glad that Naomi got a CW show over Static because I don’t want my boy done like that. Leave him out of that universe. He doesn’t deserve that fate.

On one hand, it's a shame they gave a show to her instead of a good character.

If I learned anything from Bendis's prior work on solo heroes he's created, they have a ton of angst, and initially generic superpowers, without a real superhero name they used to/never had (Powers, Jessica Jones, and Naomi).

I was more interested in exploring the Thangarian and the Ranian living in small town America together.

I suspect the blandness is semi by design. It gives the show room to take her random directions without it being called out of character and all her powers are probably very budget friendly and fit in with pre-made effect from there other shows. The other characters you mentioned require creativity and budget because most of them don’t live in standard towns with standardised powers.

I'm just still bitter about Bendis' Superman and Young Justice run and it has me feeling hesitant about any of his new stuff

As being of someone of color and enjoying various publications of both Comics, TV shows, and anime I can completely understand the means of what happens when people try to rush productions on ideas to create diverse concepts to widen the spread of popularity for them, and I completely agree with you, to develop a character especially of one of color you have to slowly progress to that position of fandom, otherwise you do actually end up with a very flimsy overpowered perspective that doesn't match the overall aesthetic, Naomi is basically another attempt and example of what Marvel tried to do with Miss America aka America Chavez in her comic book debut, which by the way was so bad it got canceled after just like three issues, she's overpowered made of ethnicity and has no true ark to her name yet she is posted out to be the most powerful of them all and apparently is put front and center for the public to see just to be accepted right away, and if you deny her you are then judge because they think you don't like her simply because she's of ethnicity, I am no fan of that type of writing and definitely don't like it when they force diversity, just because it's a thing that everyone else is doing. if you want diversity do it right or don't do it at all, that's all I have to say on the matter.

I feel like Bendis has been on auto-pilot since 2015 when Hickman was in charge of marvel status quo. I think he needs to go away from mainstream comics completely for a bit and write some original stuff. It would also be a nice way for him to read a couple of current comics and get caught up with continuity. I feel Bendis always ignores continuity or on-going story lines which is frustrating.

I wish we were getting a series about Icon and Rocket, both are established characters of color with unique powers and backstories, and they play well off each other as a team. If they wanted to pay tribute to Dwayne McDuffie why not adapt some of his characters?

The key to improving diversity is placing an emphasis of having actually GOOD characters. A prime example is something like Arcane which is diverse as fuck but is primarily celebrated for having good characters. Due to this I see far fewer arguments about representation as people simply enjoy the characters for being great. Naomi isn't a good character and that critique shouldn't be overlooked but rather acted upon by making her more engaging.
