Never call up something you can't put down. Dragonfire rounds are your friend. By Salt and Steel, their Form you Gave. By Salt and Steel, Back to the Grave.
The firebird knows your anger And the firebird feels your fear; For your passions will attract her And your feelings draw her near. But hate and fear and fury Only make her flame and fly. You must rule your heart, magician, Or by her bright wings you'll die! Now the cold-drake lives in silence And he feeds on dark despair Where the shadows fall the bleakest - You will find the cold-drake there. For he seeks to chill your spirit And to lure you down to death. Learn to rule your soul magician, Ere you dare the cold-drake's breath! The griffon is a proud beast, He’s master of the sky; And no one can forget the sight, Who has seen the griffon fly? Your own heart you must conquer, If the firebird you would call, You must know the dark within you, Ere you seek the cold-drake’s hall. Here is better reed, magician, Than those books upon your shelf. If you seek to master others, You must master first yourself!
And what if they are up against a fire dragon, fire mage, or vulpix hope the white mage can keep up with heal spells while you beat it to death with a stick?
Check out the Tarma & Kethry books (and the rest of the Valdemar library) by Mercedes Lackey. That's where the picture at the top of the page is from. Wonderful tales of magic and fantasy with fascinating characters.
If you need to deal with something, whack it with your staff. If it's immune to five feet of solid oak then chances are the bugger's immune to magic as well.
My advise for shadowrun mages. Be nice to your spirits. Even of your tradition sees them as mindless magical constructs, treat them well and they'll be nice back.

as a seasoned DnD an LARP Mage my advice: "Never summon anything bigger than your head...Or the summoning circle..."
@Jakub Ziarno ?
...Use your own head as a templet to trace the summoning circle. Roger that. o7

As a seasoned dnd and larp warrior my advice:
Any problem can be solved by killing enough mages
i didnt ask how Big the summoning circle is! i said "come forth dagon"
Advice to young magician:
Always stay in long range unless you're a battle mage or magic knight.
Advice to young magicians:
Do not call up what you can't hang up on.

Advice to Young Magicians: Use fireball and only fireball.

@@kimlindner4033 Use better/more fire.
Remember, Fireball is 3rd level so it takes a 5th level mage to cast. That's not a young magician. Start with the classic Magic Missile.
@@LordDragon1965 Not if you threaten god with a molotov until they allow for fireball to be cast at first level.

The word is rede, not reed. Rede means advice or counsel, particularly from one person to another, while reed is a type of plant.
Actually, it's read, as suggested by the books right after.

The rede of the song is put forth as better than the rede of dusty books' authors. John nailed it.

Tricksy one. Mercedes Lackey arts the books and many of the songs and quite often performs on them.
Never heard of a kyree before. Kinda curious if that is inspired by some kind of myth like the others.
It's race in Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar universe, kind of sentient wolves.
