*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone!
Access the playback speed controls as follows:
*Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time.
*Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

Also a half White, half Chinese girl here! It's rare to find someone who has a similar background as me that I can relate to! I'll post a video soon too talking about my experience growing up in China~ Stay tuned!

what a delightful interview with Richard. Yes it is always more difficult to be the "lao wai" in Middle Kingdom...but Richard seems to have adapted well and hope he continues his interest as a linguist..He could use his language skill at large corporations needing translators. Very unusual for his father to live in China at 18 yr old to learn martial arts, inspired by Bruce Lee...thank you for a lively enlightening interview...keep up the good work

Always nice guests and always nice vidz..Eileen has the gift to talk to people, to strike the perfect conversational balance. I was 9 or 10 years old when I fell in love with Chinese by reading an article on radicals in my mother tongue, Bulgarian. I still remember the radicals and hanzi : 森林 (sēn lín) 木 (mù), and 川 (chuān). There was a 9-years old me, reading about the Chinese word formation...and the rest is history. Slowly but surely, I have been learning to speak, write and read Chinese Mandarin. At around that age, I started learning English and Russian as well, later in life Greek, French and Icelandic. The key to it: love what you do and do not give up on it, one can stop , take a break ( and the break maybe short or long) and then one gets back to it.. It is a never ending loop , like the universe itself 🙂

Interesting video, but I’m captured by the title of this segment. Half-White, Half-Chinese. It is a shame that in the english speaking west that so many of including the huge diversity of peoples of European heritage have been reduced to a complexion. In this conversation we learn that this young man is at least half New Zealander perhaps British. People of the world are much more than a complexion. They carry with them the unique histories of their families, their historic national cultures and the tribes from which their familes originated.

When I went to Malaysia for a few months to visit my mom's side of the family they all spoke Mandarin. Within a few months, I picked up Mandarin very quickly. When I came back to Canada, I found that I couldn't speak Vietnamese anymore. I can't explain how and why, but it seemed that Mandarin replaced my Vietnamese. I still understand Vietnamese very well, but when I want to speak, I get choked up. I think if I practice speaking Vietnamese more, I will get it back again.

@@jingchen9695 I understood your point fine. I think that the first person who commented above was being unkind . . . It is very easy to make someone feel uncomfortable if they are speaking in a second language. I am learning Chinese and Chinese people have been very patient with me. I hope English speakers are the same way.

I feel like, at least here in the north, if people see a half-white half-Chinese person, they may assume they're some ethnicity from the west (Uyghur, Kazakh, Tajik etc.) or just "新疆人".
