Choosing a guitar slide

  • There's myriad of different slides to choose from, in terms of size and materials, but I hope this might be helpful in pointing you in the right direction. Personally, I think that fit and feel are really important. I find thin-walled lightweight Pyrex slides far too light to "stop" the string properly, and ultra heavy metal sides can be too weighty to play accurately and with nuance. My personal preference is for either a proper glass bottleneck cut from a wine bottle, or a good ceramic slide such as a Starsinger. For me, these have the ideal balance of fit and weight, feeling natural to use. There's no absolute "best", as it is a matter of personal preference, so you might have to try a few different slides before you settle on something that suits you.

Being an engineer I made my own on the Lathe. Got a scrap bit of chromed EN8 and worked out with my sister in law's ring measuring things the right size. Checked the internal diameter with the verniers and drilled it out from the bar stock (beauty of that is for a chromed steel slide is its heavy as I picked the billet size). Quick Emery to clean up the edges, and boom, a custom and taken me about 15 mins to make. Likely the longest time was spent with the files, de-burr and the Emery to get it nice and smooth.

Thank you for your demonstration , I play slide every day on a steel republic Parlor and a 100 year old Chicago Washburn parlor Brazilian rose wood ,nothing like it, (just got Her) Named her Anne Mae, after Mississippi Fred McDowells Wife, ANY WAY Like you, I prefer some weight on my slide and i like a snug fit ... If I play one that i like, and the fit is too wide i wrap a piece of material around My PINKY finger and that works just fine I like Heavy Glass, and chrome steel is nice I have a whine bottle slide that sounds great ,but i do not like the lip on the bottom they tend too get in my way I want to get a brass one next ..I find that the WEGHT does make for different tones, im 61 and still got some of my hearing left ,thank god for that, And THANK GOD FA DA BLUES!!!

I bought several off the internet and was greatly dissappointed as to the fit. I went to an auto parts store. I tried on different deep, 6 point, metric sockets. 18 mm fit perfectly on my left ring finger. Cost $6 . Used my 4 in grinder and cut off about 3/4 in and ground it smooth. Works great.
