What a beautiful piece of equipment. Modern gear just does not compare... you could chill and watch the meters dance, basquing in that incandescent glow. VFD's and LCD are OK but there's nothing like retro goodness. Amazing job!!!
I put some warm white LEDs into my old retro radio and they actually look quite nice. If I didn't tell you you would think it was an incandescent, but it took 4 LEDs to get the same effect as the beam width is much narrower, and in a receiver when I changed the FM Stereo lamp to an LED the beam width was a problem because the F and o of FM Stereo were dimmer than the rest of the characters.
And another one doesn't bite the dust! Thanks for another informative video. There is no substitute for experience, most of us will never get there, but you show enough basic skills, tips, and"how things work", to be both entertaining and help me learn to maybe do some maintenance/cleaning of these old gems. Never say you will never get there. I got some formal training in my early days through manufacture courses, but not from post secondary. I actually went to school for television production, and learned video editing using linear based tape systems as there were no computers back then. The best we had was a smpte time code editing controller and a couple of edit decks. My electronics training I got in high school, and from manufactures courses when I fell into the service business, which was never my intended career choice. I learned from working with a very good engineer at my first job at a TV shop while I was still in high school. He taught me allot as far as radio and TV went. I got the VCR training when I worked for Sony. Anyone can learn this stuff, you just need to be shown where to look, and how to make common tests. Most faults are relatively easy to find on vintage stuff.
OK! I have my RS2007 back from my tech friend Greg's shop and it's working great. Best receiver I've ever had. I'd say you would have to spend $2,000 or more on a new unit and it wouldn't have the panache of this old beauty. Brushed, anodized aluminum beats molded plastic any day for me. Plus, you have a useful equalizer most receivers don't offer. Rocks my listening room! Thanks, 12-Volt!
Akai preamp PR-A04 and amp PA-W04 bought in 1979, both still sounding great. Managed to get the Akai AM-U06, same great sound. Both use the pulsed power supply, smaller transformers, less distortion, better sound.Very good quality.
Instant thumbs up when you mentioned why you used incandescent lamps instead of LEDs! I've tried finding good quality LED replacements for vintage audio gear for a good while, but have now pretty much given up. The colour is almost always wrong, or there is a severe hot spot in the middle, or both. This unit looks very similar to the end of the 70s RS-1080 which I had in my late teens 20 years ago. That thing was an absolute MONSTER! Very large, weighed 30kg (65lbs), 2x170W RMS into 8 ohms with 0.1% distortion, 1 kilowatt power consumption. There was no reason to believe these numbers were exaggerated. It could easily drive a pair of massive speakers borrowed from the local band into their extreme limits, non-stop for hours after hours when required. :) Over the years the controls got a bit noisy, and eventually the right channel and the whole tuner section died in a thunderstorm, and I sold the Fisher for peanuts. I now wish I hadn't, but I didn't know much about electronics back then, nor how much it would be worth in 20 years! Thanks for the great video, hopefully there's a lot more vintage hifi repairs in the pipeline!
I hate LED replacements lights, and that includes these yahoos that replace their halogen headlight bulbs with LED (or HID) and blind everyone coming the other way. Sorry but for meters, and dials, only incandescent works for me. I put LED lights in one of my clocks, and on my Akai 1710W reel to reel and it looks stupid. The color is way off what it originally was.
I have a fisher BA 6000 amp with the less reliable darlington power pack and the thing is a tank. It was abused by my uncle's son before he gave it to me 25 years ago. His kid used to play it for hours on end at full volume until the peak led lights lit up. With the exception of cleaning the relay a few pots and a few cracked solder joints the thing keeps kicking today.

I love the design of this stereo. each part has it's own board. I hate how some equipment combines everything on one board. I tore down a flatscreen TV that a friend of mine brought over and it's audio amp was on it's own board. I think you know what I did with that. I have this philips boombox and it had something fall on it and the tuner board was trashed but the rest of the unit was good. I tied onto the audio out wires from the old tuner board and ran them to an aux input jack. Now I can plug anything I want into it. The CD player still works but the CD door open tab broke so I just press the switch to make it think the door is closed and then cycle the function switch to change CDs. And you can mod most of those cheap FM transmitters you just bypass one of the resistors on the antenna or just tie the antenna before that resistor.
Studio apartment Standard. Everything Fisher late 70's to 90's was a studio standard, from the bottom to the top. Worked for their warranty station, too bad Sanyo/Fisher have been squashed and are no more.
Me, I like swapping the bulbs with yellow-glo LEDs and not having to replace burned-out bulbs down the line. And, like bulbs, running LEDs on lower voltage/current will extend their lifetime. If you're worried about hot/cold spots, take a file to the LED to make the lens diffused. Now if the bulbs are socketed and easily accessible, then it's not so necessary to replace them with LEDs (like the bulbs in older tube radios, they were usually socketed.) For bulbs that are hard-wired (as in the set you're working on), or if they're a real b**ch to get to, then LED's win for me.

DeOxit is not conductive, it's a solvent that potentially breaks up conductive oxidants. Most of the time it never shorts anything. All the circuita Dave DeOxits are high impedance line level which doesn't get damaged with DeOxit.

Oh sweet, sounds like you got a new scope maybe. I picked up a new Siglent 50 mhz DSO a few months ago and I'm still learning how to use some of it. I like the built in FFT and now I can at least save screenshots. I still use my old Tek though, DSOs are nice but CROs will always look way cooler.
I still have my Barker and williamson duel trace, 30 mhz solid state with a crt but prefer the convenience of the portable hantek 250 meg 4 channel digital computer scope just because its 45 lbs lighter, and dont get a hernia moving it around
I totally agree with you about the LED bulbs.. many on forums swear and get arrogant about using them where for me depending on the unit looks artificial and looses the aesthetic charm of the "warm glow" of the dial. I have seen some change the lamps on the pioneers that had the natural glow of a bulb to blue or green LED and i think it looks horrible!!!!!!!
New equipment coming, I bet it's the new scope, very exciting! Hope it has a CRT. Nice receiver repair(s)! Clean off that paint too... Have you shown how to re-align the FM radio (trimmer cap for high end and tweak coil loop position for low end) to line up the dial markings with the actual radio station frequency? Also, pass on a warning about using freon gas can "dusters" to make darn sure no freezing liquid sprays onto the cap fins (freezing it will cause room air condensation that will make a dirty, watery mess shorting between the fins!) For those few really stubborn tuning cap noises that could not be cleaned out completely with air, I used three low voltage AC transformers wired back to back to isolate, current limit _and step up_ line voltage from 120 vac to ~240 vac to zap out any remaining dust from the tuning caps. (Of course, all the capacitor circuit connections need to be unsoldered 1st) My zapper was conveniently packaged in a sturdy plastic bag with a pair of output wires terminated with insulated alligator clips and the power cord dangling out of it. It was the "go-to" tool for several other technicians to borrow while working on FM receivers with filthy tuning capacitors.
No CRT unfortunately. It is a 100MHz dual trace DSO. Couldn't find a reasonable good CRT. I looked at many, and people wanted as much for a 30 year old scope as I could get a Chinese DSO for. I had a few viewers offer me a donation of a scope, and I am still open to them but none materialized, and not a single offer even bothered to get a quote on shipping charges. I got tired of waiting.
New toy sounds exciting! ...sad that no "old" CRT scope showed up at your doorstep. I love/hate my *very* cheap DSO - it just does not feel right - have to be careful that it does not mislead me, but it has great digital features! IMO they're especially dicey for newcomers to basic analog electronics. I really miss my Tektronix 465/05 CRT Scope.

Lee's Electronics in Vancouver has them. Not cheap, 2.50 each, but it keeps the unit original, and you have to admit the glow of incandescent lamps in the dial looks better than LED. One of my favorite display technology for digital clock is the Numitron, which is incandescent filiments. Look far cooler than LED. Nixie is my favorite followed by old Numitron. Dimmed down then look fantastic, and will last forever running dimmed down.
This is a good unit, with plenty of power. Back when Sanyo bought Fisher, they peoduced some really nice pieces. The vintage American fisher were better, but these Japanese made pieces were also very good. They did go down hill just like everything else.
Hi, I need help with a Sony STR AV 850 amplifier. The left channel suddenly stopped working. I checked everything I could cause some "technician" "checked"it and told me that he couldn't get the diagram to fix it. I tried to do it by myself but i'm not a technician. Thanks.
If the dial knob for FM or AM scratch you need the Axis something contact spray ((K60)) German Product))) i see Eight and just a drop then the scratch is gone scratch
any cleaners are slowly being outlawed from the market, all i can get is acetone based cleaners on line, cause the state of California has declared they are cancerous to laboratoy rats in the state of california
@@darrellscott2483 I own the rs 2007 and rs 2004. The fisher rs 20** and 10** up to the 1058 seem to have an issue with the meters sticking. Supposedly the rs 1060 and up do not. I have not started to dig into mine yet that is stuck.
Problem with shop compressor is particles of air tool oil. Not ideal for electronics. Canned air -- as $ as it is -- is better. For a general blowout, leaf blower is ok.
I have a dryer on my compressor to trap moisture, compressor oil ect. It fits between the compressor and air tank. My compressor came out of a telco exchange used to pressurize paper cables.
I now understand why i've only seen fisher as a junk plastic product, the takeover ruined it :-(. If the original fisher was as good as that receiver, they did make smashing units :-D. I love the older designs, no nasty smd parts and the layout just made it obvious what pcbs were doing, the building blocks were easy to get at :-D
The early tube Fisher equipment is very high quality, and is sought after today. That was the stuff that made the Fisher name. All of the great stuff from the golden era of Hi-Fi was wonderful. Fisher, Eico, Scott, McIntosh, Marantz, Harmon-Kardon...even if the names are still around, none of it is made like it was back then.
I have to admit i have never owned valve based amplifiers, but i've seen too many plastic crap fisher units, i called them "fisher price" after the babys plastic toys. But it seems i never knew the real fisher, after watching this vid i can see that they did make decent semiconductor based hifi equipment. Shame they were bought out, plastic junk was the product after that :-(.
Avery Fisher was a consultant for Sanyo after the sale and for the first several years they built decent and competitive gear. Unfortunately, like many (most) makers (Cough, Pioneer, cough) they started cheaping out during the recession of the end of the 70s and through the 80s. They also moved into the mass market in the 80s. They must have known they were cheapening things because they dropped the old slogan "The First Name In High Fidelity" from their materials and ads.
Must be nice to still have a shop that carry's replacement parts like the light bulbs... the rest of us are stuck with ordering from china and crossing your fingers if they show up...
I thought you weren't supposed to use compressed air to remove dust from electronics. Doesn't that just push the dust into somewhere it can't be removed from?
after listening to those tube amps, all the transistor equipment sounds like crap. they have a scratchy quality similar to fingernails on a black board! I have a transistor Marantz sterio receiver and I havnt touched it in 25 years
Tube equipment is very smooth sounding. That's why so many guitarists will not play through anything but a tube amp. You can thank all those guitar heros that kept the tube amp makers in business because if it wasn't for musicians and their love for the sound of tubes we probably wouldn't see many these days. It was the constant need of tubes for guitar amps that kept the tube makers continuing to make them.
@@12voltvids yes I remember my buddys always had tube guitar amps growing up and the beautiful blue glow from those big powerful tubes. One day they got a transistor powered amp. They tried cranking that up and it only lasted about a week and blew out all the output transistors. At the time those output transistors were so expensive it would have cost more then the amp was worth to replace them

I had a Fisher Cr 110 Studio standard Cassette deck it died 2 years ago. I wish i knew about you then cause i would have send it to you.

you ca use brake cleaner for air capacitors, it completely evaporates in a minute and it also cleans any type of grease or clogged crap...

Car dash instrument clusters, i go to auto store and get them cheap, wedge bulbs work great for a replacement

That has to be the biggest transformer I've seen in a Fisher unit.
This is a good unit, with plenty of power. Back when Sanyo bought Fisher, they peoduced some really nice pieces. The vintage American fisher were better, but these Japanese made pieces were also very good. They did go down hill just like everything else.

Hi, I need help with a Sony STR AV 850 amplifier. The left channel suddenly stopped working. I checked everything I could cause some "technician" "checked"it and told me that he couldn't get the diagram to fix it. I tried to do it by myself but i'm not a technician. Thanks.

@@darrellscott2483 I own the rs 2007 and rs 2004. The fisher rs 20** and 10** up to the 1058 seem to have an issue with the meters sticking. Supposedly the rs 1060 and up do not.
I have not started to dig into mine yet that is stuck.
Problem with shop compressor is particles of air tool oil. Not ideal for electronics. Canned air -- as $ as it is -- is better. For a general blowout, leaf blower is ok.
I have a dryer on my compressor to trap moisture, compressor oil ect.
It fits between the compressor and air tank. My compressor came out of a telco exchange used to pressurize paper cables.
why not use a filter to capture the oil and moisture?
Save these plugs the ones you cut off from the bulb because, you never know when need to replace with the new plug for the electronic. =)

If the original fisher was as good as that receiver, they did make smashing units :-D.
I love the older designs, no nasty smd parts and the layout just made it obvious what pcbs were doing, the building blocks were easy to get at :-D
The early tube Fisher equipment is very high quality, and is sought after today. That was the stuff that made the Fisher name. All of the great stuff from the golden era of Hi-Fi was wonderful. Fisher, Eico, Scott, McIntosh, Marantz, Harmon-Kardon...even if the names are still around, none of it is made like it was back then.
I have to admit i have never owned valve based amplifiers, but i've seen too many plastic crap fisher units, i called them "fisher price" after the babys plastic toys.
But it seems i never knew the real fisher, after watching this vid i can see that they did make decent semiconductor based hifi equipment.
Shame they were bought out, plastic junk was the product after that :-(.

Avery Fisher was a consultant for Sanyo after the sale and for the first several years they built decent and competitive gear. Unfortunately, like many (most) makers (Cough, Pioneer, cough) they started cheaping out during the recession of the end of the 70s and through the 80s. They also moved into the mass market in the 80s. They must have known they were cheapening things because they dropped the old slogan "The First Name In High Fidelity" from their materials and ads.

Must be nice to still have a shop that carry's replacement parts like the light bulbs... the rest of us are stuck with ordering from china and crossing your fingers if they show up...
There are fewer and fewer shops around. I am lucky as there still in one retail store and one parts dealer that operates out of his house.
why not order from that shop 12volt gets his bulbs from?
I thought you weren't supposed to use compressed air to remove dust from electronics. Doesn't that just push the dust into somewhere it can't be removed from?
Or bend components over and possibly break the leads. I prefer a hand air pump and paint brush and shop vac.

after listening to those tube amps, all the transistor equipment sounds like crap. they have a scratchy quality similar to fingernails on a black board! I have a transistor Marantz sterio receiver and I havnt touched it in 25 years
Tube equipment is very smooth sounding. That's why so many guitarists will not play through anything but a tube amp. You can thank all those guitar heros that kept the tube amp makers in business because if it wasn't for musicians and their love for the sound of tubes we probably wouldn't see many these days. It was the constant need of tubes for guitar amps that kept the tube makers continuing to make them.
@@12voltvids yes I remember my buddys always had tube guitar amps growing up and the beautiful blue glow from those big powerful tubes. One day they got a transistor powered amp. They tried cranking that up and it only lasted about a week and blew out all the output transistors. At the time those output transistors were so expensive it would have cost more then the amp was worth to replace them
