Awdry gave the Railway Series detailed world building giving Sodor a history dating back to 1000 B.C., its own language, as well as descriptions of its economy and locations? His works have actually been compared to Tolkien's in terms of world building. Makes sense given the series is supposed to have universal appeal, even if the series now is generally marketed towards children.

I actually grew up with Thomas's sister show Tugs and I gotta say, that one was quite a bit darker on a more frequent scale. It seemed like every episode, something bad was happening that ultimately led to, oh I dunno, something exploding and potentially killing/sinking one of the boats, an implied lynching from the rival tug company, freaking ghost tugs or the death of a random and unnamed cargo ship. It was a good show, but so messed up 😂
i watched steve's review on tugs, seemed like a very interesting show! the models of the characters are all in a museum now (forgot which one) so they can be enjoyed for a long time, which is think is great!
Don't forget how Big Mickey the crane drowned, luckily he was reincarnated into Thomas the Tank engine, although he spent a good amount of time as a regular crane before coming to life in the cgi seasons
Trevor the Traction Engine wasn’t dying, he was just asleep. He had a happy ending, he got to carry children around the churchyard, his favourite job, while the vicar looked after him.
I always loved shows like this. They teach children to care about others and helps them develop their sense of empathy. Then they can forget it all when they grow up.
Thomas and friends was my absolute favorite thing growing up and even now I have major nostalgia for it. It’s even caused me to have an interest in model locos today. And “Henry slept with my wife” made me laugh way too hard.
