I made a paper mache dragon, then taught him to dance! www.GourmetPape....
Not sure what I liked more, the process or the dance moves. Gosh, I love this!
Hello there. Thank you for the nice remarks. This probably took a couple of weeks to make. It's hard to tell since I make more than one project at a time and I'm trying to film at the same time. It takes longer when I'm worried about the camera.
Thank you for your interest.
Dan
That's really flattering. Thank you for your kind words. Yes, get those kids to work! We need less zombies and more dancing dragons in the world!
Take care
Dan
WoW ! You must have such a happy heart, your creations are full of joy !
And thanks for the laughs too during the dancing scenes, perfect timing !
Awesome video! I have just rediscovered you and am watching all of your videos. Bought Simple Screamers in early 90's and your Monsters book arrived today. I have several creatures just waiting to get out of my head- thank you for sharing the many ways to do this! You are so inspirational!
Hi Janice. You are an old timer like me! That is funny. You are very welcome and thank you for your kind words. Time to make something awesome. Good luck!
Dan
Thank you! I'm very happy that you liked his little dance.
Take care
Dan
all i can think to say right now is "wow, what fun!" oh yeah, and this... "i love your creations and appreciate your talent".. thanks for posting... : )
Absolutely Brilliant!! Such artistry......takes my breath away. Thank you so much
Hello again Anna. I'm very happy that you enjoyed the dancing. I am not a puppeteer. It took me a long time to teach this little dragon to dance, especially the moon walk at the end. Who would have thought 3 seconds could be so much work. I have a much greater appreciation for Michael Jackson!
Thank you for your kind words.
Dan
Thank you James! Your compliment is much appreciated.
Dan
Dan, You are a star!! have watched all your videos now, tweeted them, linked them on facebook, emailed links to friends! I'm an elementary teacher and you have inspired me completely for the year ahead! Thanks for all the time you put into promoting the importance of art. Hope your days are filled with fun! Shaun...
what a big talent!
you have a gold hand
so creative, pretty, colored and funny!

Dan
Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the video.

Dan
paper mache is never meant to be a clean work because from the dirt will rise a beauty of his work
Thank you Rose! I really appreciate the nice comment. It makes my day! And yes, give this medium a try.
Dan
@DanMonsterMan
Got your book a few months ago, and have made a pig and a marionette so far.
Thanks so much for sharing your art and techniques, and I love your book.
my 7th graders made "skillet monsters" last year and this grading period we are making dragon and monster trophies-- we start tomorrow! I am so excited. AND cloth and elmers saved this as an art form for me.
Great work! Fun , refreshing and creative.
Going to your website to learn about your book1
OMG!!! What an AMAZING JOB!!! Congratulations you have such a talent, love it...Thank you for sharing and showing us, I will practice for sure.
I'm glad to be of service! Good luck to you!
Dan
I'm diggin the dragon's moonwalk at the end! Lmao HarDcoRe!!!!! Thats skills man!
Hi Tina! It's nice to hear from you. I hope all is well. And I hope you are still doing your art. You are a very creative person. Maybe the book will give you some tips.
Stay in touch.
Dan
You sir is absolutely amazing!
And this is the first time a marionette doesn't scare me..
This is the most awesomely entertaining tutorial I've ever seen! Those guys look GREAT dancing!!!
You are more than an Artist. Simply, you are *Incredible !*, Dan.
Cheers, John from Chile (South America).
@DanMonsterMan Aahhh, cool. Thanks a ton for responding! You take care too and keep making your awesome papier mache masterpieces!
I just LUV your dragon marionette! He's quite handsome and talented with his moonwalk :)
PS. This video inspired me to try one more video with marionettes. Maybe you would enjoy that one too. It's called "Rum and Paper Mache".
Dan
Oh my gosh this dragon is fantastic!! It has so much personality! The dancing zombie is great too!
Thank you very much Tim! I appreciate you taking the time to write.
Dan
besides that I'm Colombian and proud to see people like you
my 7th graders made "skillet monsters" last year and this grading period we are making dragon and monster trophies-- we start tomorrow! I am so excited.
I am a sculptor as well and I have to say that paper mache is one of the hardest mediums for me to work with. I really admire your talent with it! I should try my hand at some more things like this :) Kudos!
so creative, so beautiful. Thank you for sharing, this made me smile! I am going to buy your book!
the intermittent dance breaks made my morning,..
wow i loved the way he danced..its so cute!! n such a nice wrk u did out there

@DanMonsterMan Aw, no problem, Dan! Stuff like this always brightens up my day! :)
Wow, that is amazing! If only I can do that, I'm too
inexperienced for that. Still gonna try though, thanks for
the upload xD
Give it a try. You have nothing to lose. You will have fun. Thank you for the nice comment!
Dan
I loled when i see the dragon dance. Im making a paper mache hand for english class and this vid totally helped!
I'm very happy I could help. Thank you. Good luck with your project!
Dan
PS. I have another dragon marionette in my other video called "Rum and Paper Mache". Just if you are interested.
every time i see these i have four phases:
1. (base paint) holy crap, the painting is so good
2. (lowlights) oh, okay. i guess it looks okay darker
3. (drying off dark paint) HOly MOLY I CHANGED MY MIND THIS IS AWESOME
4. (highlights and extra coloring) AAAAAAAH I LOVE THIS
You are too funny Jim! Yes, it is always scary to cover a paint job I like with black paint. But it always improves the piece. It pulls out the details. Thank you for the nice remarks.
Dan
I've watched all your videos, and this is my favorite one. The dancing at the end is just fantastic -- they look so excited to be alive. I'll be checking out your book next!
Oh my gosh! Your work is amazing. I've been wanting to get into papier mache for a while, and finally I've been fumbling around trying to get started. I have not gotten started yet, not really, sort of not really LOL. But tomorrow! I know it takes a lot of work and practice to get to your level of experience and art, but I bet I am going to get a fun start.
I wish I could express how happy I feel right now.
Hi there. You sound pretty happy. That makes me happy. This is a great medium. Yes, it does take some practice. All things worthwhile do. Good luck!
Dan
One of the coolest things I have ever seen!
I think at last I've found a touch of genius on You Tube. I made a papie mache pinata
for a children's party, and the odd illustration & poem re dragons. Not as good as yours though. I've seen a large full sized drago made & used for theatre, which was done by a puppeteer, & quite bad in honesty, but this fellow of yours is lively & lovely
absolutely fantastic and amazing, you are truly talented, I watch in awe!
It must be annoying with those strings!
Thanks for watching.
Dan
I TOTALLY LOVE how you crafted that masterpice just with paper-machee. =D And it looks soo adorable too, how you let him dance too. A LOVELY video!

Beutiful and refreshing work! You made me smile!
This is super amazing Dan! Really well done!
Fab! I've used this film to show my students... thank you...
OMG I just laughed my ass off at the dancing! That's too funny! Awesome video
too funny, loved the moon walk!!! You are AMAZING
the daancing cracks me up every time nice job
That's insanely good!
you were right about the first time you cute a section in half. just taking that knife to my section was stressful since I only made the one. but after I cut it in half and pulled that stuff out, it worked...now I just have to add the top piece and add one more layer of paper strips, add the legs and face and it will be done...I gotta hurry though cause I'm running out of time here.. thanks for the shove in the right direction I will be giving you credit for that.
@DanMonsterMan No problem. keep up the great artwork by the way
Dan,
I keep looking at your video, you made an amazing job. Im putting my teenagers to watch this, something creative that puts your mind and imagination to work, instead of just killing zombies on the screen. Keep up the good work, I'll be checking your vids im your new fan.
You Sir, Are a true Artist !
I saw your book and the random Q&A section was HALARIOUS!!!!!!!!! ^_^

Truly Amazing!
Can you make tutorial on how to make these marionettes?
Thank you. It is covered in my Papier Mache Monsters book. And I show the making of the dragon marionette in my "Ru and Paper Mache" video, step-by-step, on my blog. It's all there.
Take care
Dan
Music is awesome but the dragon is even cooler :D
This is absolutely amazing, and is dance is so great! I think it's time I invested in one of your books. I'm currently making a six foot polar bear in my bedroom at home, and I plan on using your techniques for the claws and teeth. Thanks for the demos! :)

Heheheee I can't stop laughing! Thanks for the medicine of laughter on this one!
Thank you Daniel! The comment is much appreciated.
Dan
Thank you! Working on a dragon right now ;)
Very good job! I love it!
Hello again :) I left a prev. comment awhile back & forgot to ask what tune is being played. I'm always looking for upbeat happy music & this would be great for when I'm creating ( and driving ).
I hope this video never disappears, love it so much ! :)
Wow! This is amazing! I love papier mache, and this really shows the potential of the art. Haha. If you don't mind me asking, what mixture do you use for your paste? Oh, and also, what material are you using for the webbing on fins and such? If you can answer, thanks! If not, I understand, since you probably say all that stuff in your books, right? Haha :D
I'm gunna try it. thanks for the encouragement. maybe I'll post a photo when it's done.
hey i bought your book! i just have to say you have a whole lot of talent
p.s. i love your kitty!
Great Work. And a well put together video. :)
@DanMonsterMan No problem, thanks for the reply. I'm going to try that sometime.
are you a puppeteer too? cool dragon too, i've been designing a robot and you've really helped my understand what i need to do for it to work thank you. :D
oh okay, see I didn't think of the thrift store for old sheets. now I'm going to raid the thrift store for old white sheets. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to be watching a few more of your tutorials and some others for this spider I need to get done with soon. I'm trying everything and still it's not coming out right. if it doesn't work here soon I will be giving up on it.
You are too kind. Thank you for this comment!
Dan
You should have totally worked for Jim Henson Creature shop back in the day I wondering if you would ever do some awsome puppets you should make a video that recreates your storybook with them!!!
Reminds me of "Figment" somewhat. Immaaagggg-ination.. :) I have to check out your site now. 5 stars!
Moonwalking dragons! So cool .. and such a talent.
How long did it take you to make this, I wonder?
