  • Today I will show you how to culture rotifers. Rotifers are one the main first foods for clownfish and breeding other marine aquarium fish. Culturing rotifers is key to your success in breeding clownfish.
    Welcome to the Fish Tank Barn!!! The Fish Tank Barn is home to a variety of fish species such Lake Malawi Cichlids (Haps, Mbuna, and Peacocks), Cichlids from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria, unique live bearers, guppies, Discus, various clownfish species and many more. When the fish aren't the center of attention, we are focused on a variety of topics in the aquarium hobby from fish unboxings, product reviews, fish room tours, fish breeding, and aquarium events. Things are always changing here in the Fish Tank Barn so make sure to follow along so you don't miss anything.

    Great video! I just started culturing live food for my saltwater tank. I started with copepods but can't seem to get those to take off so now I'm thinking of trying rotifers which brought me here. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Rotifers look easier.. hopefully. 😁 You can never have enough buckets in this hobby! LOL

      Your welcome Karen Norton. Rotifers are easier for sure. I have never done Copepods but you need to have a culture of T-Iso algae going as well to feed the copepods.

    Good info. Just subscribed because of your swordtail videos. Might comein handy if I ever get it together to get more Congo spotted puffers.

    Good afternoon, my good friend, I'm from Armenia.There is no living culture of rotifers in our country.Can you please tell me if it is possible to buy rotifer eggs and get live culture of rotifers from them for feeding clown fish fry?I will be very grateful if you answer me

      I don’t know if they ship to Armenia but you check with Reed Mariculture. Also you could check with food fish farms in your area and see if they have a more local supplier as well

    I'm a bit confused. Isn't a strainer that fine used to capture the rotifers? When you feed the rotifers to the baby clownfish do you just take the rotifers directly out of the bucket? You don't strain then out?

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  4 роки тому +1

      The strainer is to remove large particulates. The rotifers go through the strainer while the crud is left behind.

      How would you catch the rotifers if you want to ?

    • @tesusreef2625
      @tesusreef2625 4 роки тому

      Ivan Nunez you would just take a cup of it out of the bucket I think

      @FishTankBarn once you filter out the algae with your 53 micron sieve, and now all the rotifers are in the clean bucket, do you just scoop a cup from the clean bucket to feed to your clowns or do you have to use another sieve to strain out your rotifers and then feed them to the clowns? Also.. once you take out half of your culture and start a new bucket, what do you do with the first bucket? How do you clean it if the rotifers are still in there?

  • @mogtrader8
    @mogtrader8 4 роки тому +2

    Where did you get that strainer? You're saying you have to strain out everything into new bucket, retain some fluids from old into new? For top off, what do you add? Tap water, distilled, or ro/di?

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  4 роки тому

      I bought a rotifer strainer on Amazon. It was a 53 micron strainer. To make a second bucket you would split in half and add new saltwater. Top off I would add RODI but you should be changing the culture enough that top off wouldn’t be an issue.

      @@FishTankBarn so u basially need to.always change the wayer, or what indicators do u use to prompt that change to a new bucket process. nice vid

      Yes will need to change and harvest frequently or your culture will die out.

    Im just curious the green water will crash if it will have rotifer?

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  3 роки тому

      Yes you will need to keep adding algae in order to keep the rotifers feed.

    What size micron mesh should I use to filter the algae out but let’s rotifers through? I have the same 53 you used. I’d like to filter algae out and then collect rotifers. Reef nutrition sells a 41micron to collect. I know it’s a numb question but isn’t 41 larger than 53? I’m worried I filtered all my rotifers with algae using 53 micron sieve. Thanks!!!

    • @FishTankBarn
      @FishTankBarn  3 роки тому +1

      41 micron would capture smaller items. Another way of putting it is a 41 micron organism is smaller than a 53 micron organism

    Where can i find Rotifers in nature. Or naturally..

    • @FishTankBarn

      P.S. they do occur naturally but it would be very inefficient to search through nature with a microscope to find them.
