    11-string baroque guitar. Göran Söllscher is arguably the greatest guitar player in the world. Yet without argument, J.S. Bach, the composer of this masterful piece, assigned the credit to where it is rightly due: SOLI DEO GLORIA! =)

    • @budsurtees4224

      Sollscher is certainly a gifted guitar player, and you could say he is one of the greats, but "the greatest guitar player" he is not.

    • @whoisathome
      @whoisathome 8 років тому +28

      +victorseger1 This is 100% true. This is an alto guitar made by the late Georg Bolin (1912-1993), Stockholm, Sweden. I studied guitar making for him and worked as his assistant from 1982-1992. It is tuned in G, just like a renaissance lute with descending basses down to b flat. The melody string are either tuned as the lute, or as the guitar, the difference being the tuning of the third string. It is truly an amazing instrument, here being played by a master... / Peter Bengtsson, master luthier

    On Bach music he plays all notes (not in this performance) if you listen to the CD he recorded with the same guitar. Also Narciso Yepes, on his 10 strings guitar, many years before, played all Bach suites for "Lute o Cembal" using all the notes required. So, tuning the guitar depending on the tonality, you can take advantage of all the strings. Just like the ancient lute players did.

    • @Laubzeck

    The D in the second bar of the second part of the Bourrée is raised an octave on normal guitars which sounds quite odd (as is the case for many other Baroque music transcribed for standard guitars). Happy to hear it on a guitar that can play it correctly! Seriously the standard 6 string guitar really can't dip deep enough and I wish 8 strings were the standard. Definitely gonna get myself a nice 8 string when I can.

      Edouard Deflandre the relation of the intervals was adjusted more and more in time to be able to play in multiple keys. Nitpickers like to point that out, but E Minor is still E Minor, 30 Hz more or less.
      Also yes, it sounds like he plays in G, i guess either special tuning or a video issue.

    • @markbuenoguitar
      @markbuenoguitar 9 років тому +3

      wooki321 The typical tuning of the 11-string alto guitar is (from high to low): g d a f c G F Eb D C B. This puts the instrument to G, up a minor third from standard guitar tuning.

    Goran is easily one of my favorites. The guitar is an 11-string Alto that is either a Bolin or a copy of a Bolin (by Anders Uppstrom?). These guitars have the same 6 strings as a "standard" concert guitar, with 5 bass strings added to be able to play lute suites (such as what these two pieces are from) as written. If you can't find one used, you would have to order one and then wait for it to be made for you. Bolins are very rare and valuable; however, a copy might go for under $20,000.00.

      ***** Although this modified guitar has 11 strings, here the musician never
      uses more than the common six strings of a standard guitar. I guess the
      other five are for when he needs bass notes. It's sort of like those double-neck guitars played by some country artists from the 1960s. Just a gimmick.

    Ouais, il joue comme moi....mais tellement mieux ! Pour découvrir Bach ou Vivaldi c'est l'un de mes interprètes favoris; plein de pudeur et de délié dans le jeu. Vraiment très beau.

    11 cuerdas y solo usa 6 ,extravaganza pura e incomodidad. Igual toca muy lindo. Amo a Bach ,Chopin y el gran yunico niccolo paganini

      Esta usando algunas mas que las seis habituales, ademas las cuerdas mas graves, aunque no suenen pulsadas, están vibrando por simpatía con las que esta tocando, produciendo de esta forma un resultado muy similar al obtenido con el laud, instrumento para el que fue escrita esta obra.

      That's an awesome looking guitar! I always loved playing on a 12 string guitar but never owned one

      The difference between a 12 string and 11 string guitars is much greater than just one string. The 12 string is similiar to the 6 string in tuning except each string has an additional string which is tuned the same as that string. I think the first two are tuned in unison and the other four are tuned an octave up. I don't know much about 11 string but I assume they are much more difficult and would take much more practice. Like when you go from 6 to 12 string it's pretty easy because you don't have to learn any new strings.
