Shirley fought back the tears that welled up in her eyes and gathered her belongings from her office desk - a cup, a calculator, a calendar, and various small items.
Her friend tried to calm her down: "Come on, Shirley, don't be so upset! It's just a job loss. You see, the company is on the verge of collapse, salaries are being delayed, and since you joined later than everyone else, they decided to dismiss you first. You'll find a better job; you're still young. Besides, you have a wealthy fiancé, so you won't be left high and dry!"
The girl sniffled: "That's true, we have a wedding coming up... And now I'm unemployed! Oh, I can already imagine the sarcasm from my mother-in-law... She never liked me anyway.
She thinks I'm not good enough for her son, coming from a ordinary family and working in the archives. And now she'll scold me for depending on Brad! But it's not my fault that my mother raised me on her own.
We always struggled financially; my mother is just an accountant, not a millionaire. I couldn't even afford to go to college because I had to take an office management course after high school and start working.
I had just settled in and gotten used to everything, and now I have to look for a job again. Such bad luck!"
Helen hugged her colleague and said, "Alright, things will turn around; don't be so down. If your fiancé loves you, he'll understand, and as for his mom, just ignore her. You don't live with her, after all! Well, take care, darling. I wish you good luck!"
Shirley returned home feeling sad and shared everything with her mother.
"Oh, my daughter, how unlucky. Right before the wedding. Well, don't worry, things will work out. Look through job vacancies, maybe you'll find something you need."
Shirley went to her room, changed her clothes, and collapsed on the bed, crying bitterly... How was she going to tell Brad? Brad's mother will definitely think that she is only dating her son for his money.
Looking at a photo of her beloved, the girl remembered how they had met; it was so unexpected... On her way home from work, Shirley liked to stand on the bridge for a long time and gaze at the river - it always calmed her down.
She did it almost every day. And one day, as the girl leaned on the railing, lost in the ripples on the water, she was frightened by a flash! It turned out that a young, attractive guy had taken her picture. Shirley looked at him, puzzled and startled, and he began to apologize.
"I'm sorry, I couldn't resist! You're very beautiful! Do you mind if I keep this picture as a memento? Look, it turned out great!
Don't worry, I'm not a psycho or something like that. I'm just into photography, and I'm always looking for interesting shots. I have a whole collection at home. By the way, my name is Brad!"
Shirley blushed at his compliments and whispered, "And I'm Shirley. No, I don't mind at all, I just didn't expect someone to take my picture right here on the bridge! I often come here; I like looking at the water, it makes me feel so calm and peaceful inside!"
The shot had indeed turned out beautifully: a pensive girl in profile, with her blonde hair fluttering in the wind against the backdrop of passing cars.
And so, the young people became friends and soon realized that they were deeply in love with each other. They were drawn to each other like magnets, and not a day went by without them calling each other.
Each date made them even happier. Brad was not an ordinary guy; he was the son of a businessman. In his twenties, he already had his own car, given to him by his parents. He dressed in the latest fashion and had almost graduated from a prestigious college.
Shirley, on the other hand, grew up in an ordinary, even poor, family. Her mother, Helen, had raised her alone, and it was difficult to provide for Shirley on her own, but the woman always tried to make her daughter look just as good as everyone else. - Розваги

Shirley was so lucky to have met and married a wonderful and decent man like Brad Fuller. His parents were snobs. Shirley came from a modest family. His parents disapproved of Shirley because they wanted her to marry Megan who came from a wealthy family. However, Brad told his mother that he didn’t like Megan and there was no way he would marry her. During the wedding Shirley’s mother made a speech and announced that she had bought a summer house in the village for the newly weds. Brad’s mo ridiculed her and she lef the wedding reception in tears. Brad’s father was a company CEO. He had always wanted Brad to join the company as his assistant but Brad refused, Shirley and Brad decided to move the country house which Shirley’s mother had given them because living in the city was expensive and neither of them had a job, When they arrived at the house they found it to be in a dilapidated state. Shirley was not keen to live there but Brad told her that he wanted them to move into the house but it would require a lot of repairs and renovation. At first they hired professionals to undertake the repairs but soon ran out of money so they decided to do the repairs themselves. Shirley’s mother Helen offered to help them. One day when they were working in one of the rooms, the wall suddenly gave way. They pushed it and found a chest behind the wall. On opening the chest they found expensive jewellery inside and stacks of cash at the bottom of the chest. The jewels had price tags on them. They suspected that the jewels and money had been stolen from a jewellery store. They asked Helen who she had bought the house from and she told them that the seller was a man who looked like a convict with tattoos all over his arms. She said the man was probably the thief. They all decided to turn over the chest to the police and maybe the owner of the jewellery store would give them a reward. However, before they had time to go to the police station something terrible happened. Shirley and Helen were preparing dinner in the kitchen when two thugs broke into the house and demanded that they hand over the chest. Brad tried to stop them and put up a fight but the thugs beat him up and injured him. Brad told Helen to run and ask for help. Shirley ran as fast as she could and screamed for help shouting that two thugs were robbed them. Most of the neighbours who were armed with pitchforks and spades and spades came to their assistance led by their next door neighbour called Richard. The police were also called. The police came and arrested the thugs. At the police station they interrogated the criminals. One day the police investigator came to see Brad to tell him what the criminals had told him. Apparently the mastermind of the heists of a series of jewellery stores in the city was a businessman who used his business as a camouflage for his criminal activities. Brad asked the investigator what that had to do with him. He was shocked when the investigator told him that the criminal mastermind was his own father. He had been involved in the heists of jewellery stores for several years. His business was just a front for his shadowy activities. The investigators also told Brad that his father had been arrested and charged in court and was now serving a prison sentence. Brad was worried about his mother and tried calling her several times. Shirley told him to invite her mother to live with them. Brad was grateful to her. He went to his parents’s house in the city but his mother was not there. One day when they were relaxing at home, Brad’s mother turned up at their house. She had been trying to look for their house but had gotten lost in the nearby forest. She was looking disheveled with torn clothes and stockings and she had also been bitten by mosquitoes. Shirley invited her to take a bath and gave her clean clothes. Both Brad and Shirley invited her to live with them. Mrs Fuller was grateful to them both. She finally realised what a kind person her daughter in law was and gratefully accepted. One day Brad and his mother decided to visit his father in prison. They saw a thin old man who was nothing like the confident businessman he once was. He was remorseful and asked for their forgiveness. Brad hugged him and told him that no matter what he had done he was still his father. One day their neighbour Richard came to visit them at home. He was very smartly dressed in a suit and tie. He told them that he had come to propose marriage to Helen,Shirley’s mother. She was surprised but decided to accept his proposal Brad and Shirley ran their farm successfully with the help and support of their neighbours. They knew that they had made the right decision to move to the countryside and live in the house that Helen had given them.
