Thanks for including the fact that things WILL grow even fruit in small containers.
While I don’t suggest trying to grow things long term in cups, doing so unintentionally has let me learn that while it’s not ideal, it’s not the end of the world either.
Many teachers aren’t aware that plants will still grow in small containers because they haven’t tried. Which leads them to telling others it can’t be done and making it sound like it will ruin everything.
I appreciate people like you who aren’t afraid to experiment. And who have a balanced tone that doesn’t make everything seem dire.
That being said, I’m planning on planting less and putting my plants in bigger containers earlier.
I’m gardening in a studio apartment and want to take advantage of the fact that the weather is less of a factor in my ‘garden’.
Thank you for the videos. UA-camrs like you taught me to turn gardening without money or land into an advantage. ❤
❤️❤️
Thanks for the info and good luck this year. Enjoy!

Hi Gary. A little off topic, I planted my Honeycrisp and Fuji apple trees today. I started emptying my 30 gallon grow bags to fill my new 2x6 raised beds, and dug into a fire ant nest. That pretty much ended my gardening for the day. The ants have been poisoned, and the nest should die out in a day or two. Rain is in the forecast for tonight, so I'll resume filling the raise beds Monday. Tuesday is seed sowing day for me, so I have three raised beds to top off with compost. Then I'll sow seeds for snow peas, shelling peas, carrots, radishes, golden beetroot, and assorted lettuces. With lettuce, every year is a mystery. I have Bronze Leaf, Romaine, Blac Seeded Simpson, Merlot, May Queen, and Butter Crunch seeds mixed together in a jar. I shake it up, and sprinkle seeds. Whatever comes up, is what I eat. Last year it was mostly Romaine and Black Seeded Simpson. I probably have about 150 seedlings ready to pot up, a few, and more sprouting. The next, and last, batch of seeds under the grow lights will be cucumbers, zucchini, Crookneck Squash, and and Lemon Squash. I'll sow them March 1st. My last average frost date is April 10th. The last heavy frost/freeze is usually between March 19-23. I have potatoes chitting for the first week of March.
My ground is still frozen today. Soon on my end. And ouch on the ants.

I've taken to doing 3-week transplants for everything I start indoors. Tomatoes included, as I find the smaller transplants overtake the larger ones. I would do peppers for longer, but I'm not growing them this coming season.
I agree. The peppers are best grown larger, I agree with that too. Good luck this year.

Cucumbers I direct sow. Then I will start some seeds in trays for a second crop. Here in s/w pa. It's sometimes hard to get a second crop. With a transplant it's works a little better.
Yeah transplants are great for round 2 or replacing damaged plants.

I just found your channel! Love love it. This is my first year with a garden. I've read everywhere that now is the time to start cucumbers where I live, but my dad adamantly told me to wait at least 3 more weeks. So this was reassuring and educational.
I have a probably obvious question- what does acclimating the plant entail? Set it outside during the sunny days for a week prior to transplanting? Or simply giving it time to get used to the change from indoors?
And thank you for the information!
Congrats with your first year. You really dont need them to grow long indoors and they love warmer soil. Good luck and let me know if you have questions. Change from the indoors to the sun. Start with like 20 minutes each day and increase slowly. Morning sun is best.

Appreciate your channel and your podcast. Quick question - why start anything in the smaller cells if the larger cells/cups are more optimal?
Smaller plants are fine and it depends on how much space you have under the grow-lights really. But if you can start in larger cells, I would do that.

I’ve got 2 sets of cucumbers, one beit alpha and one space master, in 3 gallon pots growing in my south facing window. They’re only about 6 inches tall and my only regret was waiting so long to sow them, I wish I’d started some in September, so these would be the second round. Next fall I’ll start way earlier if these do well. I’m planning on growing them up a net in front of the window and they just started putting out tendrils, so I need to get that hung. I’m thinking growing them close to the window, possibly touching, when we got -20 and stayed freezing for a week, they probably would have gotten damaged. Fun experiment either way!
Good luck and have fun!

Hi Gary!
QUESTION:
I have Broccoli Rabe under lights in my home. About 73 degrees.
I also have a grow cabinet in my garage. About 64 degrees.
Is it better to put them in the cooler garage 64 degree grow? .
They're about 3 inches right now.
Thank You.
I would put them in the cooler garage. Heat can actually make them a little leggy.

Unfortunately, I’ve already seeded my cucumbers a week ago along with tomatoes. What can l do to stretch it by another 2-3 weeks until my last frost date on 5/11?
Tomatoes are fine. The cucumbers should just have flowers removed. Good luck.

is it okay if i let the seeds germinate inside a cup of water? they swim at the bottom of the cup and is opening after 2 days. will they drown or something?
I havent done that. Usually I germinate on a damp paper towel. Warm crops I just direct seed once the warm temps are here.

Does using grow lights that have (UV - A and IR) for a few hours each day {for a week before putting outside} along with the white (6500K) help to harden them while they're still inside?
It would. I just have never tried it.

When can you direct sow Zucchini and Cucumbers ? I live in an apartment and all of my plants have to be grown in containers outside ...no room to grow them indoors !!!😔
You don't need much space to start indoors.
Look up the average last frost date for your area. I'm in Missouri so I'm safe to sow mine outdoors the first day of May. Also, I made it easier on myself and printed out a guide from Mizzou telling me the recommended planting dates for different vegetables. It's come in handy. I'm sure you can find one for your state as well. Also, there's no shame in simply buying some plants from the store. I'm guessing you don't have container space for more than a few plants anyway. Just sayin.
Well I do cover it in the video. Last frost date and count back several weeks. You just want them outside when frost is not in the picture.
