Kudos to you. What I love about this journal most is that you have opened the door to paper crafting to people with VERY limited means. Almost anyone could manage to gather the supplies used here.
I do enjoy these truly junky journal videos. It just reminds us how little we really need to make something beautiful and fun to use. I'm busy scrapbusting as I watch! And I agree with others who said gesso is fine - like you said, no rules, but we can't use second hand tape or glue etc, so we have to be realistic in our own rules haha.
Love this little journal. I have been collecting "junk" but have never started putting anything together. I love your approach anc now i am looking at every piece of junk that comes my way in a brand new light. Thank you for that. And i say gesso is like glue, and other tools needed to put the junk journal together. I say use it!
This is such a fun journal! And I think gesso is so basic, like a tool, not a medium, that it's fine to use on a project like this and honestly, on anything!
I think there are junk journal STYLE books that include using digitals, paper and ephemera bought for this effect-most of what’s on UA-cam is this as people want to sell their digitals. Then there are actual junk journals like you are making that are papers and items you’ve collected in daily life. It’s a way of finding beauty and value in the mundane, and I find it much more interesting than digitals. Using paints, gesso, crayons, etc. that you already have seems like a great way to bring the items to life.
Use the gesso, paint, whatever! 🤗 I like the challenge of using only junk for the structure and ephemera, and then adding touches of other mediums for decoration.
I use gesso (and paint markers and acrylic paint, and pens etc etc) in all my junk journals 😄 For me, this is where the junk journals morphs into an art journal, because once I've finished making my journal, I go through and put my art into it. I think the myriad of groups online who call themselves junk journallers, in the main, just make the journals, not use them. In fact, you're the first UA-cam artist I've seen who creates art in hers.
The lady who said that gesso ink glue and I think even stamps that you use with ink are all acceptable as enhancements to the paper junk stuff. Yours is turning out so lovely
I love that you are using leaflets and all sorts for your joutnal, its very clever. The only issue I have with acrylics and gesso is the plastic base it has..its not environmentally friendly. Maybe a water based paint instead? Poster paint? You know it's so interesting the art journalling world. I feel like mostly stuff i see online isn't really a journal in the sense of it being a self reflection. Its more just making some art.
Interesting comment - all my art I put in my journal is a form of self reflection, I just happen to use paint /collage instead of the written word, so for me, its more than simply making art.
Shana your junk journal is lovely. To me anything goes, I use gesso, matte medium, watercolours acrylic paint, inks, acrylic markers in my junk journals.
For me the basic materials for construction are junk but mediums like gesso, ink, paint, staples, tape, pens etc are necessary to make the junk journal usable. Loving your journal so far, very inspiring.
Something I do for the writing portion, is to use poetry or music lyrics that speak to me - it takes the pressure off on having to write something in the traditional journal style and journals don't have to be completed daily, just whenever you want to.
I have to either write, draw, sketch or paint in mine. No wrong way to do it... I just like it to feel like a inner monolog of my life, in the moment. I bring my daily art/junk journal with me wherever I go(I generally have multiple journals I'm working in, but usually one main one, if that makes sense, 😂). I'm really glad I ended up finding your channel, and I love your accent! ❤
Hi. Wish I had all your junk journal junk papers. Not a big enough selection and my desk is pretty small so I do most of my crafty stuff on my sofa, believe it or not! Have you been junk journalling for awhile! You Hayao many cool ideas! I only started last year but am loving it. Thanks for the inspirations and sharing! You're great. So enjoying your videos! Cheers from Montreal.❤
Use gesso. I subscribed when you posted videos without talking. Loved watching your sped up techniques. Other junk journal crafters explain every movement they make, film everything they do. It can sometimes become repetitive. Just letting you know, your videos were very unique!❤ I do want to see this journal finished, I look forward to a flipthrough. Very cute cover, love it.😊
Hello! New subscriber here! 👋🏻 Honestly, this and the other how-to video about this journal are truly inspiring for me. To the point that I'd even call it therapeutic. Thanks for your excellent content. I look forward to more and watching all the other older videos as well. ❤
Hi Shana: Your scrappy, junky, junk journal is lovely! I don’t think it makes a difference whether you use gesso, tape, paste, inks, etc. Use what you have! Isn’t that what you and other crafters tell us? Looking forward to your next video. 💜😎🇺🇸
I have a foodie type magazine slash ad for a local bougie grocery store, the ephemera choices are so beautiful. Thank you for inspiring me to just do it, now
Only you can decide if you want to impose 'rules' in your art & craft. I have thrown out all rules. I do what I enjoy and makes me happy. I have taken the tip of writing on a scrap of paper to get size and space right before writing on the main page.
I am really glad to see you using gesso. I have scads of junk paper from an office printer and loads of junk mail that I want to make into junk journals. I have been wondering if I have to paste over all the ads and images I don't care for, or if I have to let them show around the edges of pockets and tucks, etc. Gesso is a simple solution that will let me write on any page I want to or wipe out ads and things I don't care for without adding the bulk of adding paper or collage to every single page. Then I will feel free to collage on the artsy pages.
Kudos to you. What I love about this journal most is that you have opened the door to paper crafting to people with VERY limited means. Almost anyone could manage to gather the supplies used here.

Quotes are a great thing to look up online for when you want to write something but don't know what. For example I'll look up creativity quotes. ❤
I gesso is a tool to use just like tape, glue, staples, paper etc. Love this journal.
Good point 🩷🧡💛

I think using gesso is fine! Adds so much more flexibility on how the pages, especially the glossy ones, can be used.

Just the way I like to use it thank you 💙💛💚☺️
Instead of covering a page like that with gesso, I use repurposed white tissue paper. It is very nice to write on.

Technically, your pens and glue aren’t junk either. I think gesso falls into that same category. Use it!
💛🤍💙
You can use white acrylic paint with any opaque or clear medium and get the same effect 🥰🌸😸
That’s exactly what I was thinking too lol. Use it!
@@Tailfuzzy True - although gesso is a much cheaper option than buying 2 separate products.

I say use the gesso! Most of us have it or a basic white acrylic so it doesn’t feel like “cheating”
I love using fun candy wrappers, clothing tags, Kool-aid packs. Im apt to use anything . I love what you're doing 😊❤

This has been a pleasure to watch! Absolutely a yes to Gesso.

Use gesso! Mine is homemade. I don’t think using gesso, even if it's store bought makes it more organic. The junk foundation is the most important.
Thank you ❤
Use gesso. No rules Some papers need gesso to work on it.

Gesso can also be thought of as old leftover (junk) acrylic paint.👍 looking great!!
