    Brad you might consider replacing the carb with a Holley or Fitech system. No, it doesn't stay original but some things are better sent down the road.

      Its an option, but then I'm adding computers to this old girl... so we'll see.

      I agree Brad fuel injection is the way to go. My 83 Cj-5 would also stall in high elevations and steep inclines. The fuel injection fixed all my problems, and better gas mileage!!

      @@TrailRecon agree, inject it and keep the old carb in the garage if you ever need it. Benefits outweigh the few cons

      Holley sniper and the electronics are fully self contained in the throttle body and looks like a carb. You can even hide it under the original air cleaner.

      I definitely recommend this and swap the ignition system to and hei if you haven't already. It's really easy and the fitech is great , self learning and my old 360 woke up from it and 12 mpg average now.

    Love the Cherokee! Owned 2 79 Cherokee Chiefs when I was younger. First one was a manual with granny low and a dana 20 second one had a turbo 400 with the quadratrac. Currently own a jk 2 door Rubicon and my 46 cj2a project.

    If this unit is equipped with a Rochester Quadrajet carb there is no reason to change, this is an excellent unit and with the center float design works well at various attitudes (lean angles). The plastic float however can get saturated with fuel and cause float level to go high. The way the rig acted when you hit the bump, I suspect this to be the case. You can also lower the float level from the original spec if you want to experiment.

    • @briancraig4411
      @briancraig4411 Рік тому

      Also sometimes raising the float bowl vent can keep high lvls of fuel from splashing up the vent tube and dumping too much fuel on the bumps, basically flooding the engine. Not sure if any aftermarket offroad needles are available like Edelbrock/Carter AFB's though.

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  Рік тому +2

      It has an Edelebrock on there now. Just a bit of sorting to do.

    • @briancraig4411
      @briancraig4411 Рік тому

      Oh nice! I used the offroad needle kit in my Carter Afb on my Scout II set my float little lower and never had it flood the engine and stall. I hope to see more offroad adventures with Prickly Pear!

    • @KiloLima
      @KiloLima Рік тому +3

      I’d add my two cents as I had the same issue with my Wagoneer on speed bumps at sea level. Bowl was just too full and fuel would splash and cause a momentary flood. Though the Howell Eli Is most ideal for wagons over the excellent Holley, it’s not necessary but will help reduce the exhaust smell. You’ll be able to enjoy the rear window down for a drive. Best thing I’ve done with my wagons … run it on 100LL … a gallon or two in every tank makes a most noticeable difference. Every once in a while a full tank of 100LL makes it sing. The exhaust smells better and it’s just as unhealthy as any other petroleum you can run through them. My AMC 360 motor with an Edlebrock 4brl gets 12MPG in cruise.
      Who doesn’t enjoy the vintage wheeling videos more than the ones of modern vehicles?

    Looks like an edelbrock carb
    You can get replacement needles to lean out your fuel at higher altitudes
    Very easy to change get up high change them out have fun
    Then change them back at lower altitudes when your airing back up
    I think part of the fun of a classic is tinkering with them
    I mean you got some really nice and very capable jeep in your garage
    Keep it old school have fun and keep learning
    Thanks for your video I enjoy them

  • @mikebriscoe380
    @mikebriscoe380 Рік тому +3

    When Prickly was going uphill and hit that bump and then died, I knew right away it was flooding from a carb float issue. If you do not have the carb float set just right, uphills will cause flooding. Also, the jets would need to be replaced to run at higher altitudes (it's not just a screwdriver adjustment). Thus the comments below for using fuel injection.

I did put a mile marker part time kit in the transferase no overdrive. Not even sure if they make them still Sold mine back in 1999 bought it in 1989 or about then. I far as i know its still running around Albuquerque. If you want to get ride of the Quadratrac easiest way is to find a jeepster commando with the T400 they have the mainshaft, adapter, and tcase model 20. I did that on another project I had.. love watching the progress.. i need to find pictures of mine

    And by the way, Brad, I totally approve of the new ride. I’m strongly considering going with a classic or vintage rig myself so that I can self rescue self repair when I’m off grid.

    Nice, maybe consider EFI? Gas now days is junk and contributes to vapor lock and other issues for off road vehicles.

    Carbs off-road can be an issue. Whenever on an incline and hitting a bump, fuel can splash into the ventures from the bowl vent. Usually, a mode can be done to extend the bowl vent up higher, minimizing the issue. The float needle sometimes can also allow unwanted fuel in the bowl with the bouncing of the float. We would install an adjustable fuel regulator, and drop the pressure when running offroad. Fuel injection was a great leap in offroad vehicles, just as electronic ignition. How times have changed. Thanks for the great video.

    That’s a sweet ride! My dad had a grand wagoneer when I was a kid. Wish he would have kept it.
