Nothing is random, but we substitute it with unpredictability, and if it is unpredictable enough to fool us into thinking it is random, that's good enough.
Please, please, please make a "Making of - behind the scenes studio tour" showing how the show works from a tech perspective inc video mixing and transforms, and all the wacky routing that I'm guessing you use.
I guess Im asking randomly but does someone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me
@Maximo Lennon Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
To answer Yoad's question... It's the purpose-built hardware interface, dedicated firmware, no peripherals, and yes, not having a screen open onstage as though you're checking your email... It's about having a workflow and an aesthetic conducive of performing music. To that end, how many pieces of dedicated, single-purpose hardware does Yoad have in that studio? Ahem! ;) Cheers!
I've actually checked and I haven't got even a single DSP based unit in my studio, every unit of hardware I have is meant to be connected to a computer and that is how I use it.
@@Yoad_Nevo Yes, but all of those hardware units were designed with an interface and operating system meant to be tactile and geared towards a specific task. It's almost a shame that you're controlling all those instruments from your computer, but that is besides the point. You asked why people don't just use their computers for everything; and the answer is as simple as I stated above. I, for one, don't want to negotiate with my laptop, a bunch of flimsy peripherals, and third-party software apps just to make music; certainly not onstage anyway. As I see it, the Mod Duo X is no different than my Helix for instance. Could I make all of those guitar tones with my computer? Yes, of course. But if I have to explain why I choose to use a Helix on tour, over, say, my laptop, a DAW, several plugins, a multi-channel audio interface, a large MIDI controller, several power supplies, a DIN cable, and a USB cable... Well, I think that about says it. And that's before you consider the visual aesthetic of having a laptop open onstage during a performance, and the connotations thereof; never mind having to mouse around on it between songs, etc. Not exactly Rock'n'Roll. Dig? ;) Cheers!
Not hard to imagine being on stage, flustered dealing with mouse focus and squinting at parameters, and being taken out of the moment vs turning knobs musically. Instead pointing and clicking. Then you update to latest OSX and one of your plugins is suddenly broken and screws up your entire setup. I don’t think it’s hard to understand the appeal dedicated devices.
The uncanny valley stuff isn't really to do with perfection, but with someting being humanlike but obviously not human. That is creepy for so many reasons. Perfection is not creepy, it's just boring and tedious. In the case of sound, a perfect sine wave becomes too repetitive, for instance, and music needs variation at all levels to be appealing to most listeners.
The vocoder isn't so surprising, in fact I'd be surprised if we didn't see more Mutable Instrument open-source code being used in everyone's digital synths. FYI for those unaware, the Microfreak is essentially 80% a Mutable Instrument Plaits module, which can be had in VCV Rack on your laptop, speaking of laptops.
Microfreak is actually not purely digital. It has an analog Filter. The digital oscillator can be operated in a 4 voice mode, so it‘s a 4 voice paraphonic synth.
Can we get an episode where you guys actually talk about the Mod Duo X instead of arguing about purpose-built hardware interfaces or whether or not to just use a computer. The Mod is a cool device and I think you guys did a disservice to it by rat-holing on the other stuff.
I was thinking about getting a dedicated workstation keyboard instead of a computer or lap top iPad stuff . But hearing the mod duo convo felt silly for a sec.
Sadly to run what we want on a Mac wouldn't be possible. Vmix is pc only and we need 4pci slots. To be fair this is the first time we've had an issue like this in nearly 3 years
@@sonicstate ah, so now we learned something ... we asked for the pre show for the 'warts and all' experience, not to see you stressing lol honest guv =)
Thanks everyone for the great episode! The technical issues don't alter the enjoyment of watching one bit, well done Nick for keeping it together and see you soon. PS: stay safe.
Only the most wet-behind-the-ears neophyte doesn't realise computers are more powerful and flexible than dedicated hardware. It's just that some people prefer one, and some prefer the other. That's the end of it. People are different.
I like hardware for jamming, generating ideas, performing and then computers for finessing, finalising, doing complex edits etc. Not that the two platforms can't do both, they can. Why some people need to turn everything into us vs. them is beyond me. Use everything!
@@jimharris6389 Yes, I should included "both". I do both. My point was that people who spend loads of time arguing or ranting about it seem to assume that people on the other side of the argument aren't aware of the pros and cons. I really don't think that's the case.
To be honest, you having this computer issue is as much a help to us computer-based musicians as your synth reviews and sonic talk shows. A real time exposé on the stresses of losing stuff. Time to backup!
Oh and I had a driver update disaster last year on win10. All I’ll say is the britec09 channel here on the toob, best channel for real world windows stuff. Using one of his vids, I got my pc back in the land of the living, zero data loss.
Yoad was talking about the environmental cost of manufacturing hardware like the Mod Duo X, but he was defending using something like Ableton in the place of the Mod Duo... Does he not realize that a MacBook Pro has a lifespan of a bout five years before it ends up in a landfill? The Mod Duo X, the Organelle, Zoia, OP1, whatever, will all outlive our MacBooks by ten or twenty years if we take care of them. Not to mention that Apple products and most Windows machines are manufactured by slaves in China, while an increasing amount of musical instrument hardware manufacturers are sourcing and building locally when they can. That whole argument is absolute nonsense.
Five years? No way, I myself am still using a 2010 MacBook Pro and I know many others that are using similar aged machines, where I live 5 year old pros are still selling for $1000+ also much of it can be recycled when it’s finally dead. That said I prefer hardware for making music anyway and only use a DAW for recording
He is still live right now I think. I’m watching right now. Am I wrong? I can’t tell because there is no chat and Nick said he was having computer problems.
Yoad, good point about the Mod Duo X-but it's simply not for you. As little as Waves plugins are not for me since I prefer high resolution graphics and avoid the 29 euro scam ; ) (You're sincere, I'm sincere.) We could also take it further and ask why someone would need hardware synths? They all (almost) are available as well sounding software nowadays. But still a hardware synth gives a sonic edge and usability (well not always). However I do appreciate you being frank when commenting products...
I think his comments where BS. Why would I want to deal with MacOS, or any desktop system, on stage when I can have a dedicated machine for the DSP and routing that I want? But since the MOD software is opensource you could run it on your laptop if you want, no problem. Reflecting back to the Max comments he made: you can actually export gen~ patches to LV2 plugins and run them in your MOD device. Too bad they never actually go into it at all. Maybe Nick can do a full review soon (without Yoaud there to be negging about it).
