I really think you've completely missed the mark on his downswing. He just turns his chest & shoulders and pulls arms along for the ride until his chest is a little ahead of the ball and the club starts catapulting thru. He is not consciously turning his hips - they are just reacting to the upper torso turning so quickly back thru the ball. Try it and you'll see what I mean. We followed him 5-6 years ago and when his group had to wait 10 minutes for the green to clear ahead I asked him what he was doing in the downswing and he said he just turns his chest back thru the ball and drags the arms along for the ride and keeps his wrist bowed. I asked him about leading with hips to start down and he said he never thinks about that - he doesn't know how other players can do that without hurting their back.
Hi Tom, thanks for writing in and really appreciate your comments. I think it's so interesting how players think of different things on the downswing and get in similar positions. Hogan and Player always thought of clearing the lower body, Matthew Wolff the same, if fact his downswing thought is "clear". I had this downswing discussion with Peter Jacobson and he thought of turning his chest as you mentioned as does Henrik Stenson. Think there are different ways to accomplish the rotational move on the downswing. I once talked to Ted Purdy who had super fast rotation and he thought of throwing his hands from the top........amazing stuff!
