I think the reason is because of the constant expanding of the hero pool. The more heroes there are, the lesser the chances of getting the needed hero copies.
Talking about your feeling regarding the pity timer. As far as I know when they added the timer they lowered the initial droprate of the released hero. At 300 summons droprate should be higher than it used to be. This lowered the chances to get more than 8 copies but people can't get screwed on the other end. Especially good for l/d heroes. I know I did 3 loops when Aspen released and I got 0 copies from the scrolls. So I am more than happy with the 8 guaranteed copies.

Barry. You were using the new fusion wrong in that video last week. Thats why you didnt like it! When you make a 9* you actually can use a 6* of that hero even though the spot says it needs two 5*s of the hero you arr trying to upgrade. After you put the hero in the first slot an click on the second spot, (that asks for two 5*s of that same hero)it gives you the option to use either the 6* or two 5*s. I know it seems confusing the way the set it up but, if you go back and watch that (i love and hate the new fusion) video... you will see that when you selected the second slot, the 6* of that hero showed up as selectable. Just wanted to help you out not wasting anymore food. I really hope this helps, its made the fusion system a lot easier knowing you can kinda play with the slots/needed copies and the slots are more a guide, rather than the only way to fuse.

I got 12 copies this time which was unheard of once pity system became a thing

Since you don’t really “need” a lot of heroes, it would be awesome to set a super long term goal of building all the E5able heroes to E5 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
