    Taryl. Thank you. You save me a lot time and grief. I was taking apart a Briggs and Stratton motor and was stumped on how to take off the valves without destroying the block. After watching you do it with a screw driver, I did the same. If I ever have to hire you for a repair you won't need the debt collector.

    Hello friend, great video about a vintage engine valve job. I have a 1986 16HP cast iron on a welder that uses a lot of oil even after I had it rebuilt [bum job] by a shop. Should I suspect bad rings or piston job OR is there seals on those valve stems that could leak a lot of oil. Spark plug stays carboned up a lot but engine runs good,....just burns a lot of oil. Maybe the tappets worn out? Your opinion would be great. Thanks.

    Hi Taryl I have a Club Cadet 1500 series 1517 model 1998 I watched how you changed a drive belt . I had a hard time getting off the second pulley . Finnally I had success. I checked with a Cadet dealer and he told me not to bend the three tabs that keeps the pulley belt on. I was instructed to not bend the three tabs but take off the 4 bolts that hold the engine in place. , than attach belt and replace clutch drive pulley. Thanks Teradon Rick

    if the springs are real tight the cam lobe will flatten out soon... there is a spring tension for all cams to save the cam lobe from to much presser on it ... now at a very high RPM now that will let the valve float and hit the piston not stay on the cam lobe. but i think this engine will not rev that high to worry about valve floating ... now this is why you have a low tension valve spring..

    I have a 1986 Briggs Industrial/Commercial cast iron block 16 horsepower horizontal shaft engine that started using a small amount of oil in 2009 so I sent it to a shop for a total rebuild. After I got it back it was worse than before and the crankcase had lots of metallic dust particles in it. Changed oil several times to flush the block but no results = still using about 2 ounces of oil when using the 225 Lincoln welder. It has never been back to a repair shop since. What should I suspect as the main culprit here? A bad ring job? Bad valve job? Valve guides shot? I don't think a bad head gasket would have much effect. How about valve clearance? Any advice or opinions out there? Parts for this old 86 model are VERY limited and hard to find for sure but it still welds great. There is no smoke on startup or while running that is visible. Air filter is a bit oily but that's just the oiled pre-filter foam I think. I would like to keep this old 225 Lincoln welder if possible because a new one is around $6500. I paid $1900 for this old gal brand new in 86. Go figure, LOL. Thanks for an informative video. My 16hp looks just like the one in this video, only larger.

    I have a 3.75 Briggs vertical shaft L head. When I took it apart I found the exhaust valve in the guide has a lot of play side to side.
    The intake valve has virtually no play by comparison.
    Do they make oversized exhaust valves (like for a car engine)? I’d have to ream the old guide.
    Do they have replacement valve guides that can be inserted ?
    Or is this engine just toast?

    How would you deal with an excessive lash between the lifters an the valve stems

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 3 роки тому

      Shouldn't happen unless someone ground a stem too far, in which case replace valve or cut (not lap, lapping SEATS valves and is not for serious material removal) the seat deeper until desired lash is achieved.

  • @TheHebe08
    @TheHebe08 5 років тому +1

    Thanks for that! I couldn't find how to gauge these valves: no one mentions that 'raised divit' the tip of the stem smacks...I was thinking I had zero clearance as I tried to gauge next to the wall itself!

  • @marksalamack6133
    @marksalamack6133 5 років тому

    Overall another great Taryl video....but on my Briggs 8HP the exhaust valve had a different keeper than the "keyhole"...actually had to use the compressor to squeeze the spring in to release a little 2 piece device that goes around the base of the valve shaft which gets held in place by the pressure of the spring pushing against itself...had to use a little grease gooped onto the pieces so they would stay in place to get te valve back in...thank you again Taryl....and if you ever need a few guys with bent noses and no necks to help deal with those delinquent accounts let me know :)

    Help! Many videos about engines running on choke, but I have one running with complete air intake blockage, only a sliver of an air operating is needed to rev it up. Rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the carb, did the valves. Compared the valve guides to another, looked good. It needs more fuel, obviously, but the intake section is very strong and it ain't gettin' it. What's next, I'm stumped.

  • @baysbeach

    First of all taryl your videos are so funny you guys kill me😂 I've learned a lot but still have a lot I want to know so thank you. I have a question I hope you still reply to this thread. I have a power washer 212cc predator it's a 2013 it maybe has 20 hrs on it cause it didn't run for over a year probably cause of the ethanol gas mix I was clueless about til recently. But I got it running well. Washed my wife's parking lot at her clinic washed my lawn mower then my neighbor stopped by with his extremely muddy tractor.... So I started washing it and the clay was so thick about an hour into it I switched to the hardest spraying tip I have the pencil sprayer and about a min into it the intake retainer washer (book called it seat,intake valve) that holds the pressure on the spring just under the rocker arm came off and motor died instant of course. So I got ohv cover off and saw it apart and I couldn't really tell anything was wrong other than maybe I never adjusted the valves cause I just didn't understand it was really needed. So I put it back together and it fired up first pull but ten seconds later it came apart again. This time I saw that the valve had flared the slot made to hold it in place so I went to the lawnmower grave yard here locally got another and replaced it. I bought feeler gauges set it to .004 and now I can't get it to start. I've taken it apart put it back to gether at tdc probably 15 times or so. The only clue I can see that it is trying to give is when I'm pulling it, it sounds almost like it's not getting fire or the timing somehow is off like valve opening a hair late or soon cause it starts letting a real light faint smoke out of exhaust after about seven pulls or so. Also I noticed on valve cover top right bolt hole (intake side) is black just that small spot on valve cover only inside valve area is clean as a whistle. I'm at a loss I've got about 18 hrs in it so far working on it and not sure where to go from here. I'm not taking it in ever I'll junk it first. I've gotten screwed for the last time by mechanics of any sort. Please help me if you can thank you for all you videos I appreciate them more than you know!

      The valves and seats are hardened, the steel wire wheel won’t hurt them.

    Hi Taryl! How do you fix a breather at a briggs & stratton engine? And how do you make sure if a breaher works or not?

      Blow on it with your mouth. Make sure you clean the oil off it first though!

    Love the vids!
    I just picked up a Craftsman (briggs) 5hp woodchipper. Someone put a to long spark plug and it smashed into the intake valve.
    I cleaned her out and now she spits out the carb, sometimes fire.
    Any advice?
    (I'm watching this vid now...)

      New valve. That one's bent and not seating. Replace valve tappet underneath as well just to be sure.

      Already did it, and that's what it was. $8 and I got a working chipper.
      Thanks for the vid!

    Also it will back fire every now and then. That "puffing" sound is actually coming out of the exhaust along with vapor. Maybe it is flooding

    So if the valve spins freely it's good?

    Hey Taryl love the pre shows you put on. I have the same Valve grinding machine can you tell me are all the valves the same angle on the back side that you grind off in the video? If not is there a website I can get the angles for different engines?

      Measure your valve angles with a protractor and check old hot rod forums like HAMB since someone has that info.
