You said peaceful animal as I watch one beat all the others off the rock.
Doragon haha yes but they only push, not bite lol
dominancce displays are common during feeding. They don;t do any damage or really even chase much, just that crawling motion.
They are playing! Fishies love to play!
Doragon lol
I was thinking the same thing... it was pretty funny. he clearly owned that tube lol
I have four of these little beauties in a 1 gallon cylindrical tank with a super small filtered power head injecting a fast vertical flow of aerated water down the side of the tank. Easiest care fish ever with a 33% water change every two weeks and feeding them only on algae wafers, with no problems for over two years now.
I agree 100% that they are under rated. There are a whole host of reasons I feel that way, including the fact that these little fish are just full to the brim with personality.
I keep reading that gastromyzon have never been bred in an aquarium and they are all wild caught, so I was really encouraged to hear you've spawned them in your tank. I have a species only tank and I'm going to grow them a little more and condition them for spawning and see if I have any luck with raising the temp and doing a water change as you did. Thanks so much for this video, it's given me hope for my breeding project :)
Hows the project going? Any fry? Thx
@@maniniscapes1936 No, unfortunately not. If I had to nail down what would be required I think they need a larger species only tank and softer water than I've got, so RO would be required. I have 15 in a 20 gallon, only them in the tank, they eat like pigs and seem very happy but I think I'd need more in a larger tank with RO water and have more patience.
@@mattkinsella9856 thanks for replying, great data! Im about to try this myself. What temp/ph/gh/kh/etc are you thinking? Ive seen several posts/videos where spawning can be induced by abrupt lower temperatures…
@@maniniscapes1936 My ph is right at 7, GH 12-14 and KH 8-10. So I'm guessing slightly lower on all those numbers because they seem happy and eating well, so I wouldn't want to go dramatically different. I think it's likely a low pressure system, like stormy weather is probably likely to trigger spawning, I'm not sure just a cooler water change would be enough on it's own to trigger spawning. Probably best to keep an eye on the weather and do a cooler soft water change at the right time when it's stormy. Also a deep bed of smooth rocks and/or marbles to protect and trap eggs. From my experience it's not necessary to go nuts with flow and powerful filtration, if anything I'm concerned maybe my filtration and flow was too harsh and maybe that destroyed eggs and fry of they have ever spawned.
@@mattkinsella9856 interesting! Thanks a lot, ill start conditioning and see what happens.
I got a couple of these a few months ago and have really fallen in love with them. I’m thinking of setting up a small hill stream tank to see if I can breed them. I coincidentally bought a male and female, and each time I change the water they start courting. Stunning.
Rachel, I've been watching your vids for a few months now but just joined your channel. I wanted to thank you for your time and let you know that I believe you are the most knowledgeable aquatic individual I've found on You Tube.
Thanks Eric!
Yes I just subbed and have only watched like 2 vids so far but I can tell I'm going to learn a lot from this channel thx!!
These are so perfect Rachel and really fun to watch to going to work on the algae 🤗🤗
Great video again Rachel!
I love that fish!
They look so awesome! I want them! I might get them soon!
Thanks for sharing!
*_Keep up the good work and thumbs up!_*
Those are wonderful little fish. I had them many years ago. Watching this makes me want them again.
Finally!! Been waiting for this specific species spotlight
I have 5 f these in my mixed tank and they are my favorite, have had them now for 6 months and have had no trouble at all. will be getting another 2 to add to the group. Def recommend getting these, there markings are gorgeous.
Hey Rachel, been watching you for about a year, once I saw these little guys I instantly knew what I wanted for my species tank! Got them last night. They really seem to be in love with the Marimo. Marimo is getting a haircut.
wow those fish have gotten a beautiful color.
love you❤
My favorite fish too, i have one couple . Thanks Rachel for this video
They are the most adorable little wiggles.
have always loved these fish.
very cute! Thanks Rachel!
I love these guys! They are so cute, and yours are particularly active and interesting! :)
it was feeding time- makes them act all squirrely and silly but they are a great group of fish.
Amazing little fish , thanks for the video 😎
thank you and your channel is awesome keep doing u your great!
I got 2 about a week ago and am in love. I'm thinking about doing a mixed loach tank
Every time I'd see one on the glass, I'd want to call it the "violin" or "cello fish" from it's shape.
I'd say they look like mini stingrays
I love these guys! Their little displays of dominance during feeding time makes me giggle. Which fishy antic is your favorite?

I ordered a spotted hillstream loach but it came DOA yesterday. The tiger hillstream loach is very nice as well
adorable little fish❤❤
First Joey uploaded a vid today and shortly afterward, Rachel does. Today is starting great for me already!
I have never been able to get this species. Awsome video.
Guh, too cute
I love these little fish, I have a couple in my 75 community tank and they don't bother anyone
I had reticulated HL's 10 years ago and was looking for some for so long during this past year...finally found a tank that had 3 Borneo's left I could put in my 55g planted/driftwood tank. They're great, they chill in the tank corner where strong current of my fluval output is, both on the glass and on the driftwood "trees" I made. I prefer them to all plecos for both looks and even algae cleanup (I love all little oddities like dwarf shrimp, upside down cats, pygmy corys, leaf fish, bamboo shrimp, glass cats, tire eels, blind cave tetra, etc.)
my go too glass cleaner!
I love these fish so much, and I only wish (for me in brisbane) they were easier to find
wow those are some awesome fish
They're hilarious! 😁
Can be easily here at my place. Just need to have a lightning fast reflex to catch LOL they're available at high altitude streams/waterfall. They're actually prohibited to catch at some place where the stream/river are protected
Awesome video; subscribed!
Hi Rachel, I have 2 of these little guys in my tank. None of the other fish interferes with them and NOW I know what they're called!!! I didn't realise that there were so many types.
They take the algae from the glass from bottom to top then float down like Superman and start again. Thanks for a brilliant video and showing us your "suckers" :>)
Glad it helped
Cute!!!
Rachel, I'm curious if they would be okay with lava rock or would it shred them up? Thanks. Cool video and cool fish.
Have you found out?
Thank you for all your informative videos Rachel. I've been reading about hillstream loaches and a lot of net sources seem really adamant about keeping them in the high 60s - low 70s for temperature. But you mention they can handle up to the higher 70s. Do you think good oxygen turnover is the more important factor in keeping hillstream species happy? A higher temp would mean more options for tankmates, after all!
I do. For long term low 70s is better- there are exceptions that require cold temps but I find oxygen content to really be the limiting factor. Most suitable tankmates like similar params
Nice video! I have recently seen some Gastromyzon viriosus with impresive yellow fins.
Great little species!
i have those in my 150g :) One of my favorites!
I've always wanted one, but no store near me has them and I haven't found a good place to get one from.
could you maybe do a video on farlowellas? I think they're so neat
I've got fry and I'm pumped! Probably happened the same way you described here though I haven't seen it go over 78
Awesome! They are rarely spawned. Great job!
Ok I won’t even be able to have a tank big enough for sting rays but I really want some of these for my 20g or 33Long but the 33 is pretty full. Either way these things are epically cool. They would love my hillstream 33!
Have you ever kept the ones that have that blazing hot pink tail? Awesome fish!!!
I assume this is the same Burmese Sucker Loach that I bought in the UK. Either way I am delighted in this little wonder. He lives in an Aqua One 510 tank with community fish the same size as him or smaller and he has solved my algae problem 100%. I am having to get some algae wafers for him (or her) !!!
That would be incorrect, since these come from Borneo, not Burma/Myanmar
Though I do realize that sometimes sellers give incorrect nicknames to the origins of fish.
Such as the "Chinese" algae eater amd the like.
Could you keep these with gold fish? im looking for a fish to help with algae
I don't have any fast moving water in my various tanks, as my largest tank is a 15 gallon Fluval Flex, but if I had the right set up, I would definitely want to stock these guys. Cool fish, love the shape and the behavior.
My flex water flow is major strong! It’s perfect for these fish in my opinion. I’m actually trying to slow down the flow for my shrimp. But your tank may be different
I have the Fluval Flex 15g also and the double nozzles move the water good. I have two of these guys for 2 weeks already and they been happy.
Curry Goudeaux my cherry shrimp love the flow they always hang by the flex double nozzles
I have a planted tank which is seeing a bit of algae on the anubias and around the place. Even with the lights on timers the algae does build up with nothing to remove it, I even tried manually wiping the leaves but it didn't really work. Originally I had six otos but the false penguin tetras in the tank were too aggressive and killed two of them, I think they were targeted due to the lateral stripe as other fish in the tank have been left alone. Otos now rescued to a more peaceful tank. Nerites are out too due to yoyo loaches in that tank. The last inhabitants in the tank are a group of peacock gudgeons. I hope borneo suckers (pseudogastromyzon myersi) might be a good algae eater to suit the tank, as they are one of the few species that is permitted for import here (Australia) and the tank is already well oxygenated, decent flow with some rounded river stones as well as driftwood, java fern, sword plants etc. I was wondering if you think they will be compatible with the existing fish and what the best method for quarantine would be - how big should the tank be, and what to feed them since the quarantine tank will be bare rather than mature? Also how many would be suitable for a 4 foot long tank (about 40g I think)?
How hard should the water be for these guys?
Plecos work well with hillside loaches? As well as Kuhli loaches? I have a 60 gal, and my Pleco is my oldest and peaceful, only would like would 1 kuhli and 1 hillside.
How many would you keep in a 26 gallon tall.
Ive heard these guys can be quite territorial with each other when housed together, have you experienced this?
are they able to breed in tank?
would these guys be compatible with 3 goldfish?
What d you feed them brand and everything
Hey iv been told you can use these in a out door pond also is this true
I'm guessing Gastromyzon sp. interbreed if the conditions are right - I just love these... almost as much as Sewellia sp.; of course, I have never had Gastromyzon loaches.... yet. I can watch hillstream loaches play all day long.
being as they have rarely been bred, I think that is a non-issue
Is it easy to find these vs reticulated hillstream loaches? Because the reticulateds are kinda big for micro tanks and it seems the borneo region has smaller varieties.
What is the ph when you bred them? Thank you
Hello great video, i was after some advice if you can help? I recently bought a pair of the hillstream loach or butterfly loach and i had them for around 2 weeks they seemed to be doing fine were very active in my setup untill unfortunately yesterday i was doing a 50% water change, i hadnt seen them that day wich i thought a little unusual so i decided to take out one of the large barrel ornaments they would usual be around to see if they were hiding and unfortunately to my shock both had died, i have done some research and i believe it may be the oxygen levels in the tank as my other 8 fish are all fine but i have a dual filter air pump but i believe this was not enough, ive treated the water since the incident and im planning on adding an additional air pump on the opposite side of the to create more oxygen and flow, do you have any ideas on what could of happened? And also any advice on what to change in the future? As i would like to get a few more as i have always adored these guys but i dont want them to go the same way as my first 2
Hi thanks for this great video, they’re amazing little fish. I got my 1st 4 days ago now I’m just a little worried about him eating. I bought algae wafers he’s not interested and definitely not interested in the flakes and bloodworms the other fish eat off. Do they literally just mop up any bio media and algae around the tank or am I doing something wrong ?
what the spotted guy doing? pushing everyone off haha
showing his dominance during feeding time
Rachel O'leary lovely Rachel.
lol it's spending more time being dominate than it is feeding.
I've been looking for a good algae eater. I have a five and a half gallon with assassin snails so merited aren't an option; the only other inhabitant currently is a male beta. The tank is moderately planted, with mostly tall plants like cabomba and anacharis. Any suggestions?
i bought 2 about 6 days ago they managed to escape my tank yesterday so damned unhappy about it not doing them again until i have a tank with a heavier lid
Can I keep them with cichlids ??
i got one on my fish tank, i didn't know they change their color to adapt with the environment they are at, i thought my hillstream loach was gonna die because it became pale, but then as i monitor him, he change back to his dark color. i even tested the water and everything is fine. he got me so nervous, i thought i'm gonna lose him lol
Jc Suprimido same thing happened to me when I first got mine
Well is this Smol boi like moss i want to make a moss wall in my new 20 long tank
I’ve been looking for these forever where can I find these I need some for my 20 gal? 😩
Rachel, I really love these fish. I am planning to build a 33 gal tank with a cannister and also a internal power Head ( to improve the oxygenated water), and can I use mild co2 for the plants? Will that creat problem.
You may find that the powerhead negates the benefits of the co2
Can they tolerate seachem paraguard with recommended dosage (5 ml per 10 Gallon)? I normally dose paraguard for new fish in quarantine for 14 days.Thank you.
Hey Rachel, your videos are awesome and I really enjoy learning about nano fish. I really think you should consider investing in a lavalier mic. Would really help with your audio. They aren't that expensive.
I have issues with lavalier mics when I speak at events, i am a bit too animated for them to not get a lot of crackle back. I use a directional mic, but am unwilling to turn off pumps that are hte life blood of my fish room.
Rachel I would really love to add one hillstream loach to my planted pea puffer community as algae control. I do use a passive co2 system (by fluval) but could add an air stone to increase the oxygen in the tank. What do you think, any recommendations?
kristine ofeldt thank you. I decided to go with a xs bristle knose pleco for now.
Hi, your video’s are very informative! Can you tell me the difference in behavior between these and reticulated hillstream loaches? I want to get my first tank and just fell in love with kulhi loaches and reticulated hillstreams, but these seem very cute as well and would allow me to get a smaller first tank. Let me know what you think!
These guys are a bit more docile (not territorial) but some can be trickier to feed and really need a well established tank
Off topic question: Is power head filters or aquariums with streams bad for shrimp?
No, they actually really enjoy it.
Love these guys, gotta get me some soon!
Btw are you saying they could breed and the new born could raise up without transferring them to another tank ?
+Aquatic Haus that is what happened
so cool, gotta get me some soon!
Almost as rectangular as their fish tanks.
Hi Rachel ! I have picked up 3 of these hillstream loach for my 30 hillstream biotope. They are soo shy and hide behind the filer media 90% of the time all I have in there is white cloud minnows. Is there a way I could get them to show themselves more ?
They will settle in and be more visible. They are probably hanging out where the good eats are
I've been looking for Hill stream Loaches but haven't found any the Local LFS had some Borneo Suckers, I picked up 2 of them. One seems to have spots and the other looks to have stripes. The One with spots is a bit larger 1-3/8: and the other striped one is 1*1/4". I believe the spotted one is a female and the other a ;male. Both are currently in QT. I'm interested in breeding these. Do you think I should start with more. Any help would be greatly appreciated
How would the dwarf or sewellia lineolata species do with goldfish? My tank is a 55 gallon and has a 10x gph overturn. There are only two 5" jikins in the tank.
I have no idea.
Do you sell these?
Question: can organic potting soil be used for dwarf baby tears? if not, what would you recommend?
I've seen people grow it succesfully on bare lavarock, if that is any indication.
I've read conflicting information about feeding. Some say they can't survive long term off of prepared foods. Have you been able to raise them off prepared foods for extended lengths of time? Thank you in advance. I'm building a 150 gallon plywood aquarium with 80 or so gallons of water. I just want to be sure before I make this happen. I trust your advice
i have a planted dirt tank, will they dig the soil?
+deeptendu chandra not if it's capped well
I just put one with my female Betta in her 20 gal because she has quite the algae problem. she is pretty sassy and flaires at me every time she sees me. wish my little loach friend luck! she is ignoring him so far
You said you once dropped the temperature to 74 degrees and they spawned. In what temperature do you generally keep them?
Ambient. On my fishroom that is around 76
Rachel O'leary Thank you very much!
didnt knew that
Do they go after green hair algae?
no
hi rachel i live in the bronx and i have trouble finding a pet shop that sell real exoctic fish like this loach do you have any recommendations for me to find a such a place?
monster is probably the best store for rare stuff in NYC
Hi @rachel oleary, do you still have these fish available for sale? thank you
No
Are they easy to care for?
I've heard that water temp and oxygen is their most valuable need.
Hi, I could do with your expert help Rachel! You have very good species knowledge so I wanted to ask... I recently got some pygmy corys, they are so adorable! I bought 12 - or at least I thought I was buying 12, as it turned out when I got back I realised the LFS had given me 11 pygmys and 1 habrosus. So my question is, will he be ok amongst all the other corys, or does he need his own friends to feel happy? I am nearing tank capacity so can't get many more, and at the moment he looks like the only kid to have gone through puberty and a growth spurt next to all the others, but I couldn't return him, that would be rejecting him and he is quite lovely! So do you think he will school with the pygmys or should i try to squeeze a couple of friends in for him...maybe I can fit two or three at a push. Thanks in advance! :)
+Sarah James I think even adding 2 habrosus is better in the long run
I think you are right, I've been watching him glass surf for a few mins now, everyone else is chilling. Poor guy! Thanks :)
I love rich,
How well would these do in a heavily planted 55g with a modest CO2 input, but with an oversized filter and aeration stones? Me and the mrs are HUGE fans of the Ctenocephalus in particular and would love to have them, but we don't want to be "shitty" fishkeepers...
I would imagine if there is at least 10-15x turnover rate and decent exchange at the surface they would do fine. I don't find htem to be particularly fragile
Excellent! Thanks for setting our minds at ease!
Need to name that little bossy one Sheldon haha
ha!
Angelina Phayu Cheshire BAZINGA
Ohhhhhh.... I have a semi hightech planted tank... so probably no hillstream loaches 😭
can i put them with red cherry shrimps?
+Egana Sugitama yes
oh good to hear that. thanks rachel!
How do you spell the name of your website?
msjinkzd.com
Thanks!
Do you sell them
Not anymore, sorry
rachel!!! are crayfish available for sale
pretty sure i have answered your other inquiries- but crayfish are illegal in my state
